  • This paper discusses the late nineteenth-century Korean intellectuals' understanding of Japanese customs on the basis of Ki-Su Kim(金綺秀)'s records. Ki-Su Kim was conservative on his inspection and observation trip to Japan Even though he was loyal to Chinese philosophy, he expressed his great interest when he was reluctant to see the Western technology flowered in Japan because it is not mentioned in Confucianism(朱子學). However, he, like mordern scholars in the later period of the Chosun dynasty, took an objective view of the military matters, such as the military training of soldiers, weapons, and others. On the one hand, he appreciated the western garment in that it, fitting the human body perfectly, makes people comfortable. In the later period of the Chosun dynasty, the Koreans had a sense of their superiority to the Japanese and held them in contempt, which had been rooted in the Japanese invasion of Chosun in the year of Imjin(AD 1592). Even around AD 1870, the Koreans regarded the Japanese as a barbarian or a savage, even though the Japanese had attempted to modernize their country with the introduction of the Western civilization since the renovation of Meizi(明治).

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest an activation plan for community centers. The community centers, categorized into 3 types by the number of visitors, were comparatively analyzed by their programs, operation, and visitors' opinion. 6 community centers in Heungduk-gu, Cheongju-city, their 6 operators, and their 220 visitors were the sample. This study surveyed community centers on the spot about their space characteristics and programs, interviewed operators, and asked questionnaires to visitors. The data of the 3 categorized centers were analyzed by frequency, average, and percentage. The following is the result: 1) The number of visitors was dependent on the type of residence and age of the residents. The activated community centers were found in residence type apartment blocks, and with an age group in its 40s. 2) The space satisfaction was dependent on the year of construction; it was higher with newer buildings and wider sizes. 3) All the centers were affirmative on the communication of the participants of programs. In conclusion, the activation plan of the community center has to comprise a renovation of old buildings, public promotion, and the development of programs taking into consideration the age group of the residents.

  • Now the world will regulate the CO2 emission due to environmental issues. For an alternative plan photovoltaic system is watched. So, photovoltaic system is trend of big city and it is mandatory for renovation of construction. Oil & gas filling station existed in city is suitable to found the photovoltaic system. But the general photovoltaic system in oil & gas filling station is difficult to found because it is classified into hazardous area. This paper evaluates intrinsic safety evaluation of solar cell for making basic data to found for the photovoltaic system on hazardous area. The intrinsic safety characteristic is evaluated by short-circuit ignition test using IEC type spark ignition test apparatus and temperature rising test. The result of short-circuit ignition test, propane-air mixture gas is exploded on condition that 4 solar cells(9[V], 90[mA]) are connected serially under insolation 800[W/$m^2$]. So, if a larger solar module will be used at oil & gas filling station than we were tested, it needs explosion proof. As the result of rising temperature test, the temperature rising due to short circuit is not so much, but when the temperature rises due to radiant heat, it demands careful consideration for environmental influence.

  • Many countries over the world have taken many discussions and endeavors on environmental improvements of energy savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions for solving global climate change problems. In Korea, pre-considerations of environment-conscious factors in buildings have been taken to be critical with new constructions and renovation markets. In this situation, the Korean Green Building Certification(KGBC) system to induce the diffusion of sustainable buildings was introduced in 2002 and developed as an improved version of the G-SEED(Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design) system in 2013 after major revisions. This research examines the importance of assessment criteria on apartment buildings to certify green buildings using the AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) method and suggests a new direction on certification assessment standards from the AHP result. In order to apply the AHP method, the survey via e-mail was conducted to design staffs in domestic architectural firms. As a result, assessment criteria such as ecological environment, indoor environment, and energy & environment pollution among 7 main ones proved to be important on assessing the G-SEED system for apartment buildings, while criteria such as land use & transportation, material & resource, water circulation management, maintenance management did relatively unimportant.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the direction for scheme cultural rural village. For this purpose, to begin with, the major elements which can be applied to the theory were extracted by the study on the scheme of rural village, and the process and the outcome for renovation of rural village were presented by design proposal for the rural village in the exhibition space of yoonghari in Chungwon-kun, Chungchengpukdo. The study on the scheme of rural village is focused on the spatial organization, the futilities allocation, and the major contents of the case study are as follow : (1) To investigate the constrains and the opportunities of site development by the analysis and the synthesis of the site condition for the case study, (2) To study on the planning theory which can be applied to the site, (3) To establish the planning directions which can be introduced into the site and to choose the rmn model by the comparison and valuation of them, (4) To set up the Master Plan on the basis of the final model In spite of the fact that the method and the contents have a lot of problems, the significance of this study is to present a possibility to renovate the rural village these days, moreover to grope for the opportunities to propagate it.

  • Nowadays, the administration is strongly driving self-innovation including public sector to solve problems continuously pointed out as issues of public sector such as the low management achievement, the low productivity and costliness structure, the low ability coping with market changes and ineffectiveness in managing organization. The core of such renovation is the systematic performance management. Provincial public enterprises are also required to furnish system that can measure management results accurately and make payment according to measured results under autonomous management system to raise management efficiency and strengthen competitive power. In this paper, we design framework for measuring management results of provincial public enterprises based on Balanced Scorecard and show the example applied to Gwangiu Metropolitan City Environmental Installations Corp (GEIC).

  • The Jinshanling section of the Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications in northern China that was constructed for strategic military defenses. This section was first built in the beginning of the Ming Dynasty in AD 1368 and then underwent major construction, reconstruction and renovation during the late Ming Dynasty, approximately in AD 1569. The Jinshanling section is 10.5 km long, a very short section compared with the entire 21,200 km wall. The wall section is located in Luanping County, Hebei province, China. This research paper focuses on the construction methods and materials of the wall and the towers in the area. The research methodology includes site visits, knowledge acquisition of experts and 3D graphic modeling. This study reveals that the materials selected for the structure include rubbles and rammed earth, bricks, stones, timber, and mortar. The erection sequence of the wall and the towers was a bottom-up fashion using various ancient construction techniques, such as the fire-setting rock blasting techniques and the surveying techniques from the Sea Island Mathematical Manual.

  • This study examined public building remodeling projects in France. Through investigating cases of ancient buildings remodeled in France, the study aimed to provide fundamental data and analysis for remodeling public buildings. Accordingly, seven cases were analyzed in terms of remodeling methods, architectural characteristics, methods of conservation, and restoration of ancient historical buildings, as well as a change of usage of an existing building. As a result, this study found the criteria of French ancient building remodeling. The remodeling methods of an existing building vary in their goals and strategies depending on how the old architectural elements are persevered, as well as how new elements are added to form their unique characteristics. Thus, the remodeling methods are classified into four types based on causes: restoration, extension, renovation and rebuilding. Such methods are used jointly rather than individually. The ancient building remodeling is the process of recreating new functions and new artistic values to preserve the cultural and artistic values of existing historic buildings.
