  • This study was conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage by porous zeolite-slag ceramics (ZS ceramics) that was prepared by adding wood flour as pore-foaming agent while calcining the mixtures of natural zeolite and converter slag. The batch test showed that the removal efficiency of heavy metals by pellet-type porous ZS ceramics increased as the particle size of wood flour was decreased and as the weight mixing ratio of wood flour to ZS ceramics was increased. The optimal particle size and weight mixing ratio of wood flour were measured to be $75{\mu}m$ and 7~10%, respectively. The removal test with the porous ZS ceramics prepared in these optimal condition showed very high removal efficiencies: more than 98.4% for all heavy metals and 73.9% for sulfate ion. Relative to nonporous ZS ceramics, the increment of removal efficiency of heavy metals by porous ZS ceramics with $75{\mu}m$ and 10% wood flour was 5.8%, 60.5%, 36.9%, 87.7%, 10.3%, and 57.4% for Al, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn, respectively. The mechanism analysis of removal by the porous ZS ceramics suggested that the heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage are eliminated by multiple reactions such as adsorption and/or ion exchange as well as precipitation and/or co-precipitation.

  • Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can oxidize various organic pollutants. In this study, persulfate/Fe(II) system was utilized in phenol removal, and the effect of various organic and inorganic chelators on Fe(II)-medicated persulfate activation was investigated. The feasibility of persulfate/Fe(II)/chelator in cleanup of phenol-contaminated sediment was confirmed through toxicity assessment. In persulfate/Fe(II) conditions, the rate and extent of phenol removal increased in proportion to persulfate concentration. In chelator injection condition, the rate of phenol removal was inversely proportional to chelator concentration when it was injected above optimum ratio. Thiosulfate showed greater chelation tendency with persulfate than citrate and interfered with persulfate access to Fe(II), making the latter a more suitable chelator for enhancing persulfate activation. In contaminated clay sediment condition, 100% phenol removal was obtained within an hour without chelator, with the removal rate increased up to four times as compared to the rate with chelator addition. A clay sediment toxicity assessment at persulfate:Fe(II):phenol 20:10:1 ratio indicated 71.3% toxicity reduction with 100% phenol removal efficiency. Therefore, persulfate/Fe(II) system demonstrated its potential utility in toxicity reduction and cleanup of organic contaminants in sediments.

  • It is important to find out a new material having high removal efficiency for the harmful algal blooms because the dispersion of Hwangto in a large amount to the sea water may bring some ecologically unfavorable problems. For this purpose, the efficiency of several natural and synthetic mineral species for the mitigation of algal blooms was measured. The mixing ratio of monominerals and the sea water with 3,000∼5,000 cells/$m\ell$ of Cochlodinium polykrikoides was 10 g/${\ell}$ and the removal ratio was measured by counting the living cells after the dispersion time of 10, 30 and 60 min., respectively. According to the experimental results, the removal ratio by illite, kaolinite, montmonmorillonite, red mud, Na-A type of zeolite ranged 84-92% after 1hr of contact time, which is comparable to that of Hwangto. The size of above monominerals ranged 3∼50${\mu}m$. Meanwhile, the amorphose material and hematite with the size of 50∼100 nm showed excellent removal ratio of more than 99% after 30min. of dispersion. The results of the study showed that the removal ratio was not related to the chemical composition and pH of the minerals applied but to the grain size. The experimental results strongly suggest that the main mitigation mechanism would be the contact and coagulation.

  • The Anaerbic Anoxic/oxic process is one of the biological treatment methods to remove nitrogen and phosphorus effectively which are nutritional elements for eutrophication. Supernatant of primary sediment of Anaerobic digester is used as a carbon source instead of methanol methanol supply in usual A$_{2}$/O process. The efficiency of the following treatment processes are as follow : 1) Changing recycle ratio in the usual A$_{2}$/O process without the stage of Anaerobic digester. 2) Changing recycle ratio in the usual A$_{2}$/O process with the supernatant supply of the Anaerobic digester. In the result of comparison, changing recycle ratio is almost no effect in the removal of phosphorus, however the effect of removal in nitrogenous substance are remarkable, and the effect of Anaerobic digester is not as effective as expected because the BOD removed in the digester partly, the rate of phosphorus to the BOD exceed pertinent range.

  • Leaf C:N ratio is a new factor in the field of biochemical inversion with hyperspectral data. Effects of common-used spectral transformations including log(R), log(1/R), 1/R, etc. from 400nm to 2490nm on its inversion are compared. Results show that their effects on statistical modeling are not apparent. Continuum removal is used on original reflectance in the range of 2030nm to 2220nm, in which exists an apparent absorption peak due to cellulose, lignin, protein, etc. The effect is distinctive and tends to improve the precision of C:N ratio inversion. Further, it is a robust and physically based transformation.

  • Intermittent aerobic digestion experiments using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) were carried out in this study. Aeration ratio was found to be an important operation factor for the reduction of solids and nitrogen. As the sludge digested, organic nitrogen was released from the solids and oxidized to nitrate nitrogen. Biological denitrification was also significant and the denitrification rate was limited by aeration ratio. Under the condition of 0.25-0.75 of aeration ratio, acclimation of ammonia nitrogen was not observed and pH were preserved near neutral in the intermittent aerobic digestion. As the aeration ratio increased, solids reduction was increased whereas dissolved nitrogen removal was decreased. Based on the experiments, 17-2% of VSS reduction and over 80% of dissolved nitrogen removal were practicable by intermittent aerobic digestion using a SBR when the MSRT were designed 8-32 days and aeration ratio was operated about 0.25-0.75.

  • The effect of temperature and influent alkalinity/ammonia (K/A) ratio on the start-up of the partial nitrification (PN) process for an activated sludge-based domestic wastewater treatment was studied. Two different sequence batch reactors (SBR) were operated at 26 ℃ and 32 ℃. The relationship between temperature and the concentration of free ammonia (FA) and free acid nitrite (FNA) was investigated. A stable PN process was achieved in the 32 ℃ reactor when the influent ammonium concentration was lower than 150 mg-N/L. In contrast, the PN process in the 26 ℃ reactor had a higher nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) and ammonium removal efficiency (ARE) when the influent ammonia concentration was increased to more than 150 mg-N/L. Then three different ranges of the K/A ratio were applied to an SBR reactor. In the K/A range of 2.48~1.65, the SBR reactor achieved the highest NAR ratio (75.78%). This ratio helps to achieve the appropriate level of alkalinity to maintain a stable pH and provide a sufficient amount of inorganic carbon source for the activity of microorganisms. At the same time, FA and FNA values also reached the threshold to inhibit nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) without a significant effect on ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Results showed that the control of temperature and K/A ratio during the start-up period may be important in establishing a stable and steady PN process for the treatment of domestic wastewater.

  • This study goes in for the observation of the characteristics of nitrogen removal from swine wastewater by struvite crystallization. In addition, the struvite formation potential in supernatants after struvite crystallization was investigated. In the study for nitrogen removal by struvite crystallization, the effects of pH and molar ratio of magnesium (Mg) injected using bittern as Mg source were investigated. Also, the potential of struvite formation in the supernatant with amount of Mg added was carefully observed. As the results, the optimum pH in the removal of nitrogen was 8.8 and sludge volume was increased as pH was raised from 7 to 12 under the condition that the molar ratio of $Mg^{2+}$ to ${NH_4}^+$-N to ${PO_4}^{3-}$-P was 1:1:1. An optimum removal efficiency of ammonia-N was observed at 1 molar ratio of Mg to ${NH_4}^+$-N, showing no further increase at over 1 molar ratio and dramatical deterioration at under 1 molar ratio. However, the sludge volume was increased by increasing the molar ratio of Mg. In the experiments for the potential of struvite formation in the supernatants, initial -log([$Mg^{2+}$][${NH_4}^+$][${PO_4}^{3-}$]) value was much lower than $pK_{sp}$ and gradually reached $pK_{sp}$ at 2 days, as the molar ratio of Mg increased over 1.2. At 31 days, -log([$Mg^{2+}$][${NH_4}^+$][${PO_4}^{3-}$]) value was returned to the initial value. In addition, the supernatants had a potential precipitation of hydroxylapatite due to calcium contained in bittern, $K_2Mg(SO_4)_3$ and $K_3Na(SO_4)_2$ resulting from the decrease of sodium and potassium in supernatants formed after struvite crystallization as times go by. Based on the results, it appears that some retention time and proper dosage of Mg may be needed for the prevention of scale in pipe line.

  • New type of rock excavation method using a waterjet system is being developed to secure economic feasibility and to reduce vibrations during excavation. In waterjet rock excavation, overlapping of cutting width is essential for high efficiency. In this study, cutting experiments for granite specimens were performed using abrasive waterjet system according to the overlapping ratio and standoff distance. Based on the experimental results, the granite cutting performance was analyzed according to the overlapping ratio. In addition, removal shapes of the cross-section were analyzed in terms of the cutting depth, width, and volume after waterjet cutting. When the overlapping ratio is less than 58%, rock specimens are partially removed due to the insufficient overlapping ratio. However, when the overlapping ratio exceeds 67%, overcutting phenomenon is observed. For the partial overlapping ratio (i.e., 25~75%), cutting efficiency is increased in the removal volume. This study is expected to be used as the important basic data for determining the optimum overlapping ratio when the waterjet system is applied for rock excavation.

  • Two rice varieties were planted and four degrees of defoliated tiller num ber ratio and another four levels of defoliation-panicle removal tiller number ratio were made at heading stage of know the possibility of translocation of photosynthetic products between tillers during grain filling stage of rice plant. The more tillers defoliated in a hill, the less matured grain ratio and the less grain weight per panicle of normal tillers were found. But the matured grain ratio and the grain weight per panicle of tillers defoliated partly in a hill showed higher than those of tillers of completely defoliated plant. No differences of the matured grain ratio and the grain weight per panicle were found between different levels of defoliation-panicle removal tiller number ratio in a hill. But the matured grain ratio and the grain weight per panicle of tillers of completely defoliated plant were significantly lower than those of tillers of partly defoliation-panicle removal treatments. These results indicated that the translocation of photosynthetic products between tillers was possible during grain filling period in rice plant. Source-sink relationship can be applied to interpret the result obtained in this study.
