  • Among the combination of 4 different second metals and 3 different noble metals, Ni 10%-Pd 1%/hematite (Ni(10)-Pd(1)/H) showed best tetrachloroethylene (PCE) removal (75.8%) and production of non-toxic products (39.8%) in closed batch reactors under an anaerobic condition. The effect of environmental factors (pH, contents of Ni and Pd in catalyst, and hydrogen gas concentration) on the reductive dechlorination of PCE by Pd-Ni/hematite catalysts was investigated. PCE was degraded less at the condition of Ni(5)/H (13.7%) than at the same condition with Ni(10)/H (20.6%). Removals of PCE were rarely influenced by the experimental condition of different Pd amounts (Pd(1)/H and Pd(3)/H). Acidic to neutral pH conditions were favorable to the degradation of PCE, compared to the alkaline condition (pH 10). Increasing Ni contents from 1 to 10% increased the PCE removal to 89.8% in 6 hr. However, the removal decreased to 74.2% at Ni content of 20%. Meanwhile, increasing Pd contents to 6% showed no difference in PCE removal at Pd content of more than 1%. Increasing H2 concentration increased the removal of PCE until 4% H2 which was maximumly applied in this study. Chlorinated products such as trichloroethylene, 1,1-dichloroethylene, cis-1,2-dichloroethylene, trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, and vinyl chloride were not observed while PCE was transformed to acetylene (24%), ethylene (5%), and ethane (11%) by Ni(10)-Pd(1)/H catalyst in 6hr.

  • Fenton process is one of the most effective advanced oxidation processes for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. In this study, while ferrous iron was used in conventional Fenton process (CFP); nano-sized iron(II, III) oxide was experienced in modified Fenton process (MFP) as a new catalyst alternative. In order to enhance their oxidation efficiencies, both CFP and MFP were combined with ultrasonication at 53 kHz fixed frequency. Thus, the influences of both catalyst iron species and ultrasonication on color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removals from synthetic textile wastewater including Maxilon Red GRL 200% dyestuff were investigated experimentally. While the COD and color removal rates were found as 72.5% and 69.7% via CFP; they were 87% and 75.8% by ultrasonicated CFP, respectively. The color and COD removals were 40.6% and 64.8% via MFP, and 49.9 and 73.1% by ultrasonicated MFP, respectively. Therefore, it was found that the simultaneously usage of ultrasonication with CFP and MFP was improved the COD and color removal efficiencies and oxidation rates even at lower H2O2 dosages, compared to individual CFP and MFP. Moreover, the color and COD removal kinetics were also modelled mathematically and compared in the study.

  • To optimize the removal of free fatty acid in crude vegetable oil, response surface methodology was applied to determine the effects of five level-four factors and their reciprocal interactions on removal of free fatty acid. A total of 30 individual experiments were performed, which were designed to study reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst amount and methanol amount. A statistical model predicted that the highest removal yield of free fatty acid was 99.8%, at the following optimized reaction conditions: a reaction temperature of 64.99$^{\circ}C$, a reaction time of 36.20 mins., an catalyst amount of 13.01% (w/v), and a methanol amount of 15% (v/v). Using these optimal factor values under experimental conditions in three independent replicates, the average removal yield was well within the value predicted by the model.

  • Thermodynamic evaluation indicates that nearly 100% conversion of elemental mercury to oxidized mercury can be attained by HCl of several tens of ppm level at the temperature window of SCR reaction. Cu-, Fe-, Mn-chloride loaded $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts revealed good NO removal activity at the operating temperature window of SCR process. The catalysts with high desorption temperature indicating adsorption strength of $NH_3$ revealed higher NO removal activity. The HCl fed to the reaction gases promoted the oxidation of mercury. However, the activity for the oxidation of elemental mercury to oxidized mercury by HCl was suppressed by $NH_3$ inhibiting the adsorption of HCl to catalyst surface under SCR reaction condition containing $NH_3$ for NO removal. Metal chloride loaded $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalysts showed much higher activity for mercury oxidation than $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ catalyst without metal chloride under SCR reaction condition. This is primarily attributed to the participation of chloride in metal chloride on the catalyst surface promoting the oxidation of elemental mercury.

  • This study examined the catalytic property of Ni-catalyst used in the gas purifying process to manufacture inert gases of N2 and Ar with high-purity over 9N for semiconductor industrial applications. Two types of Ni-catalysts with a cylindrical shape (C1) and churros shape structure (C2) were compared for the assessment. Optical microscopy and FESEM were used to analyze the shape and microstructure of the Ni-catalyst. EDS, XRD, and micro-Raman characterization were performed to examine the composition and properties. BET and Pulse Titration analyses were conducted to check the surface area and catalytic property of the Ni-catalyst. From the composition analysis results, C1 contained a relatively large amount of graphite as an impurity, and C2 contained higher Ni contents than C1. From specific surface area analysis, the specific surface area of C2 was approximately 1.69 times larger than that of C1. From catalytic property analysis, outstanding performance in O2 and CO impurity removal was observed at room temperature. Therefore, C2, having low-impurity and large specific surface area, is a suitable catalyst for the high-purity inert gas process in the semiconductor industry because of its outstanding performance in O2 and CO impurity removal at room temperature.

  • A catalyst with CuO ceramic filter for simultaneous treatment of dust and HAP was prepared and characterized. Catalytic ceramic filter can not only potentially achieve the substantial savings in energy but provide with effective optimization and integration of process for simultaneous removal of SO$_2$, NO$_{x}$ and particulates from flue gases. Catalytic ceramic filters remove simultaneously particulates on exterior surface of filters and reduce NO to $N_2$ and $H_2O$ by SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process. Preparation of catalyst impregnated ceramic filter with disk shape (Ψ 50) follow the processing of alumino-silicate ceramic filter, support impregnation and catalyst impregnation (copper oxide). Preparation routes of alumino-silicate catalyst carrier suitable for production of catalytic filters practically were studied and developed using the sol-gel and colloidal processing, homogeneous precipitation and impregnation method. Characterization of the catalyst, catalyst carrier catalytic filter materials have been performed the using various techniques such as BET, XRD, TGA, SEM. Combination of the sol-gel and colloidal processing and impregnation method is recommended to prepare catalyst carriers economically for catalytic filter applications.s.

  • In this study, we report on the catalyst process installed in conjunction with a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator to remove the oil mist and fine dust emitted from large-size grill restaurants. The multi-stage catalyst module reduced odor through catalytic reaction of acetaldehyde on catalysts even at an ambient temperature with ozone as an oxidant readily produced in a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator. Two types of manganese-based catalysts, $Mn_2O_3$ and $CuMnO_x$ were fabricated by extrusion molding for structured catalysts in practical applications, and the optimum conditions for high removal efficiencies of acetaldehyde and ozone were determined. When two optimized catalysts were applied in a two-stage catalyst module, the removal efficiency of acetaldehyde and ozone were ${\geq}85%$ and 100% respectively at the space velocity of $10,000h^{-1}$ and the reaction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$.

  • The efficiency variation of UF(tubular)/RO(spiral wound) process using acrylic wastewater treated by photo-catalyst pretreatment and coagulant-filter-neutralization pretreatment processes were discussed wit the variation of appled pressure and temperature. Ultrafiltration tubular module using acrylic wastewater treated by photo-catalyst pretreatment and coagulant-filter-neutralization pretreatment processes was shown that COD and T-N were not highly affected with the variation of appled pressure and temperature. It was shown that removal efficiency of COD and T-N was low. Removal efficiency of TDS and turbidity with ultrafiltration tubular module was better with the acrylic wastewater by photo-catalyst pretreatment than acrylic wastewater by coagulant-filter-neutralization pretreatment. T-N and TDS were shown high removal efficiency in reverse osmosis membrane process.

  • Simultaneous removal reaction for NOx, soot over Pt catalysts using various $TiO_2$ as support was studied. The catalytic tests ware carried out injectin NO, soot, NO and soot simultaneously on each catalysts. As results, it showed different NOx removal efficiency and soot oxidation rate according to various kinds of $TiO_2$. Onset temperature of soot oxidation has a correlation to $NO_2$ generated for the independently performed NOx. It was investigated that NO to $NO_2$ oxidation was intimately related to crystallite size and surface area, and it has a tremendous impact on Pt aggregation on the catalyst surface and catalyst' reducibility. Therefore, we concluded that major index of the reaction was physico-chemical properties of catalyst' supports.
