Effects of Mixing Protease and Lipase on Detergency (프로테아제와 리파제의 혼합에 따른 세척성의 변화)

  • This study investigated the effect of mixing protease and lipase on detergency. The detergency of protein soiled, oil soiled and protein-oil soiled cloths and the relative hydrolytic activity of enzymes were examined. The protease-lipase added detergent solution was most effective for the removal of protein in protein-oil soiled cloths. This is because the lipase removed the protein that was physically bound to oil as well as the protease removed the protein. The protease added detergent solution was second effective, the lipase added detergent solution was third effective, and the detergent solution without protease and lipase was the least effective. The protease-lipase added detergent solution was also most effective in the oil removal from protein-oil soiled cloths. Unlike in protein removal, however, the protease added detergent solution was more effective in oil removal than the lipase added detergent solution. This is because the removal of oil bound to protein by protease was more effective than the removal of oil by lipase. In soiling-washing cycles, however, the effects of lipase increased, and as a result, the detergency of protease added detergent solution and the lipase added detergent solution became similar.

Distribution and Nutrient Removal Capacity of Aquatic Plants in Relation to Pollutant Load from the Watershed of Youngsan River (영산강 유역으로부터 유입되는 오염부하량에 따른 수생식물의 분포, 질산환원효소 활성 및 그 정화능)

  • This study was conducted to investigate pollutant loading, were quality and plant distribution of 8 streams which are tributaries of the Youngsan River. The nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and nutrient removall capacity of the most frequently occurring aquatic plants on streamside were also determined. As a result, the pollutant loading appeared to be correlated with the area of watershed, while the water quality was related to the land use pattern of each steam. The aquatic plants were distributed differently among the streams; Hydrilla verticillata - Potamogeton crispus, Numphoides peltata - Hydrocharis dubia and Polygonum thunbergii - Phragmites japonica were dominant at the Orye Chon, Jungan Chon, Whangryong River and Jiseok Chon, while potamogeton crispus - Lemma paucicostata, Zizania latifolia - Phragmites communis were dominant at the Youngam Chon and Munpyeong Chon. Persicaria hydropiper and Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola were dominant at Kwangju Chon which was polluted with domestic wastewater. >From the measurement of leaf NRA for dominant species, the highest value of NRA was shown by the Polygonum thunbergii, followed by Oenanthe javanica > Phragmites communis > Zizania latifolia > Lemma paucicostata. The highest nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacity was found in Phragmites communis.

  • This study was performed to investigate the muscular activity of the complete denture wearers compare with subjects with natural teeth. For the study, 10 subjects with natural dentition and 18 upper and lower complete denture wearers selected and the Bio-electric Processor EM2(Myo-tronics Reaserch, Inc., U.S.A.) with the surface electrodes was used to record electromyographic activity from the right and left middle of masseter and anterior temporal muscles of each subject during mandibular postural rest position, tapping of teeth from postural rest position, maximal clench, and right and left gum and raw carrow chewing. This results of this study were as follows : 1. In mandibular postural rest position, the denture wearers produces high muscular activity in contrast to natural objects(P<0.05) but, there was no difference between the state of denture removal and insertion, and the muscle activity of the anterior temporal muscle was high than the middle of masseter muscle in natural objects and denture wearers. 2. In tapping of teeth, there was no difference in muscle activity between natural objects and the state of denture removal of denture wearers. 3. In maximal clench, there was markedly lower denture wearers than natural objects in muscle activity, and the ratio of mean voltages was about 36 percentages. 4. In gum and raw carrow chewing, the activity was lower than natural object, the ratio was about 59 percentages. 5. In chewing, the mean voltages of the middle of masster muscle on the chewing side was highest, followed by the anterior temporal on the chewing side, the anterior temporal and masster muscles on the non-chewing side.

  • In this study, we examined statistical analysis between sewage plant operations parameters and effluent quality We got six components from principle component analysis of the operation parameters and secondary effluent quality. 91.8% of the total variance was explained by the six components. The components were identified in the following order : 1) organic matter removal by aeration basin microbe, 2) settleability on secondary clarifier load, 3) removal of nutrients, 4) microbial number increasement and species diversity, 5) microbial activity in aeration basin, 6) oxidation in aeration basin.

Effect of Deglycosylation on the Aminopeptidase Isolated from Aspergillus flavus

  • A leucine aminopeptidase has been isolated from the culture medium of the soil fungus, Aspergillus flavus. The enzyme was found to be a glycoprotein, as judged by electrophoresis analysis and the subsequent staining by the periodic acid-Schiff's reagent. Carbohydrate moieties could be cleaved by N-glycosidase, but not by O-glycosidase, indicating that the glucans are linked to the asparagine residue in the protein. Removal of N-glucans was observed without prior denaturation of the protein, implying that the N-glycosidic linkage is exposed and accessible to glycosidase. When the activity of native or deglycosylated enzyme was measured in the presence of various metal ions, removal of carbohydrates increased the aminopeptidase activity of the enzyme.

Comparative investigation of activated porous carbons treated by silver electroplating from aqueous solution

  • The electroplating of the Ag ions from aqueous solution on activated porous carbons was investigated over a wide range of plating time. The adsorption capacities of Ag metallic carbons were associated with their internal porosity and were related to physical properties such as surface area and pore size distribution. And, surface morphologies and quantitative analysis for the metal supported carbons are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse X-ray (EDX) measurements to explain the changes in adsorption properties. It is considered that the pH is an very important factor at the reason of water pollutant with increasing acidity in industrial field. The results of ICP-AES analysis showed that the residual concentration of Ag ions decreased with an increasing electroplating time. The metallic Ag-activated porous carbons electroplated showed microbicidal effects and strong antibacterial activity against six kinds of strains that were used. Finally, we confirmed that the presence of the electrolytic plated Ag-activated porous carbons is a determining factor in the HCl removal by chemical reaction, clarifying the surface chemical behavior.

Removal Characteristics of Chloral Hydrate by Activated Carbons and Biofiltration (활성탄과 생물여과 공정에서의 Chloral hydrate 제거 특성)

  • Coal-, coconut- and wood-based activated carbons and anthracite were tested to evaluate adsorption and biodegradation performances of chloral hydrate. In the early stage of the operation, the adsorption was the main mechanism for the removal of chloral hydrate, however as increasing populations of attached bacteria, the bacteria played a major role in removing chloral hydrate in the activated carbon and anthracite biofilter. It was also investigated that chloral hydrate was readily subjected to biodegrade. The coal- and coconut-based activated carbons were found to be most effective adsorbents in adsorption of chloral hydrate. Highest populations and activity of attached bacteria were shown in the coal-based activated carbon. The populations and activity of attached bacteria decreased in the order: coconut-based activated carbon > wood-based activated carbon > anthracite. The attached bacteria was inhibited in the removal of chloral hydrate at temperatures below 10$^{\circ}C$. It was more active at higher water temperatures(20$^{\circ}C$ <) but less active at lower water temperature(10$^{\circ}C$>). The removal efficiencies of chloral hydrate obtained by using four different adsorbents were directly related to the water temperatures. Water temperature was the most important factor for removal of chloral hydrate in the anthracite biofilter because the removal of chloral hydrate depended mainly on biodegradation. Therefore, the main removal mechanism of chloral hydrate by applying activated carbon was both adsorption and biodegradation by the attached bacteria. The observation suggests that the application of coalbased activated carbon to the water treatment should be the best for the removal of chloral hydrate.

Biofilter를 이용한 diesel VOCs의 생물학적 제거

  • The petrochemical products can cause soil and groundwater contamination during their transportation and the use of the products, and while being contained in underground storage tanks(USTs) throughout the leakage. To treat the contaminated soil, the bioventing method is suitable for the remediation of semi-volatile compounds, such as diesel and kerosene. Biofiltration is one of possible method to treat the off-gas produced in the process of the bioventing. This study is related to the usage, effectiveness of treatment, and feasibility of two types of biofilter system made of ceramic-compost and polymer respectively to treat diesel VOCs at constant retention time of 20 sec. Compost biofilter showed the average removal efficiency of 73 % when the inlet concentration increased to 20 ppmv. Increased the inlet concentration decreased the microbial activities as well as the removal efficiency. On the contrary, the removal efficiency of the polyurethane biofilter was maintained at 88 % at the inlet concentration of 13 ppmv during ten days and was obtained to 80 % at the inlet concentration of 30 ppmv in spite of the drop of the efficiency in the sudden increase of the inlet concentration. At the beginning of the experiment it showed low removal efficiency at low inlet concentration due to the low microbial activity, however, as experiments proceed the removal efficiency could be obtained more than 80% at high inlet concentration.
