  • Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) is an appropriate framework for obtaining optimal designs by taking uncertainties into account. Large-scale problems with implicit limit state functions and problems with discrete design variables are two significant challenges to traditional RBDO methods. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a hybrid method to perform RBDO of structures that links Firefly Algorithm (FA) as an optimization tool to advanced (finite element) reliability methods. Furthermore, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the FA are compared based on the design cost (objective function) they achieve. In the proposed method, Weighted Simulation Method (WSM) is utilized to assess reliability constraints in the RBDO problems with explicit limit state functions. WSM is selected to reduce computational costs. To performing RBDO of structures with finite element modeling and implicit limit state functions, a First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) based on the Direct Differentiation Method (DDM) is utilized. Four numerical examples are considered to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method. The findings illustrate that the proposed RBDO method is applicable and efficient for RBDO problems with discrete and continuous design variables and finite element modeling.

  • In the analysis of product reliability, the fault tree is widely used since it shows the interrelations of the faults that lead to the product fault. A top-down approach based on experts’ experience is commonly used in the fault tree construction and the trees often take different forms depending on the intent of the analyst. In this work it is studied how to construct fault trees with the utilization of function trees obtained from analyzing the functions and sub-functions of products in order to suggest a generic way of fault tree construction. The function tree of a product is obtained by analyzing basic functions comprising the product main function in a bottom-up approach so that it enables to construct an objective fault tree. The fault tree for a scroll compressor is shown as an example.

  • In this paper, Bayes estimates for the parameters k, c and reliability function of the Burr type XII model based on a type II censored samples under asymmetric loss functions viz., LINEX and SQUAREX loss functions are obtained. An approximation based on the Laplace approximation method (Tierney and Kadane, 1986) is used for obtaining the Bayes estimators of the parameters and reliability function. In order to compare the Bayes estimators under squared error loss, LINEX and SQUAREX loss functions respectively and the maximum likelihood estimator of the parameters and reliability function, Monte Carlo simulations are used.

  • This paper presents the scheme for reliability improvement by dispersed generation system (US) installation and operation in distribution systems. The objective functions such as power losses cost, operation cost of DGS, power buy cost and interruption cost are minimized for reliability improvement. The original objective functions and constraints are transformed into the equivalent multiple objective functions with fuzzy sets to evaluate their imprecise nature. The several indices for reliability evaluation are improved by dispersed generation system installation.

  • Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is a powerful tool for design optimization when considering probabilistic characteristics of design variables. However, it is often computationally intensive because of the coupling of reliability analysis and cost minimization. In this study, the concept of reliability mapping function is defined based on the relationship between the reliability index obtained by using the mean value first order reliability method and the failure probability obtained by using an improved response surface method. Double-loop involved in the classical RBDO can be converted into single-loop by using the reliability mapping function. Since the computational effort of the mean value first order reliability method is minimal, RBDO by using reliability mapping functions should be highly efficient. Engineering examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. Numerical results indicated that the proposed method has the similar accuracy as Monte Carlo simulation, and it can obviously reduce the computational effort.

  • Nonhomogeneous Poisson Process is often used to model failure times which occurred in software reliability and hardware reliability models. It can be characterized by its intensity functions or mean value functions. Many parametric intensity models have been proposed to account for the failure mechanism in real situation. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian semiparametric approach based on beta-mixtures. Two real datasets are analyzed.

  • Tethers of Tension Leg Platform (TLP) are a series structural system where fatigue is the principal mode of failure. The present study is devoted to the fatigue and fatigue fracture reliability study of these tethers. For this purpose, two limit state functions have been derived. These limit state functions are based on S-N curve and fracture mechanics approaches. A detailed methodology for the reliability analysis has then been presented. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to study the influence of various random variables on tether reliability. The design point, important for probabilistic design, is located on the failure surface. Effect of wind, water depth, service life and number of welded joints are investigated. The effect of uncertainties in various random variables on tether fatigue reliability is highlighted.

  • In the present paper, a methodology has been presented for the reliability assessment of concrete barriers that lie at a certain depth in the soil, and a missile (a rigid projectile) impacts the top of the soil cover normally, and subsequently after penetrating the soil cover completely it hits the barrier with certain striking velocity. For this purpose, using expressions available in the literature, striking velocity of missile at any depth of soil has been derived and then expressions for the depths of penetration in crater and tunnel region of concrete barrier have been deduced. These depths of penetration have been employed for the derivation of limit state functions. Using the derived limit state functions reliability assessment of underground concrete barrier has then been carried out through First Order Reliability Method (FORM). To study the influence of various random variables on barrier reliability, sensitivity analysis has also been carried out. In addition, a number of parametric studies is conducted to obtain the results of practical interest.

  • Many software reliability growth models(SRGM) have been proposed since the software reliability issue was raised in 1972. The technology to estimate and grow the reliability of developing S/W to target value during testing phase were developed using them. Most of these propositions assumed the S/W debugging testing efforts be constant or even did not consider them. A few papers were presented as the software reliability evaluation considering the testing effort was important afterwards. The testing effort forms which have been presented by this kind of papers were exponential, Rayleigh, Weibull, or logistic functions, and one of these 4 types was used as a testing effort function depending on the S/W developing circumstances. I propose the methology to evaluate the SRGM using least square estimator and maximum likelihood estimator for those 4 functions, and then examine parameters applying actual data adopted from real field test of developing S/W.
