Possibility of Anoxic Phosphorus Removal by Denitrifier in Denitrifying EBPR System (생물학적 질소.인 동시제거 시스템에서 탈질미생물의 인 제거 가능성)

  • Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) behavior and microbial characteristics in the anaerobic-aerobic SBR (PAO SBR) and the anaerobic-anoxic SBR (DPAO SBR) were examined in this research. For 392 days of operation, both SBRs have exhibited a good EBPR (or denitrifying EBPR) performance. $P_{release}/P_{influent}$ ratio was highest in both reactors after the stabilization, while the efficiency of phosphorus removal was decreased since the sludge granulation has been visually observed within the reactor. The comparative analysis of Pyrosequencing-based microbial population between PAO and DPAO sludges showed indirectly that Dechloromonas spp. could utilize $O_2$ and $NO_3{^-}-N$ as an electron acceptor and Accumulibacter phosphatis use only $O_2$ in EBPR system. Also, we concluded that Thauera spp. as a denitrifier contribute significantly to the anoxic phosphorus removal in the DPAO system.

  • Polynucleotide analogues containing pyrimidine (uracil and thynime) bases, $poly[(1'{\beta}-uracil-1-yl-2'.5'-dideoxy-D-glycero-pent-4'-enofuranose)-alt-(maleic$ acid)] (12) and $poly[(1'-{\beta}-thymin-1-yl-2'5'-dideoxy-D-glycero-pent-4'-enofuranose)-alt-(maleic$, acid)] (15), were synthesized by the altermating copolymerization of relevant nucleosied derivatives and maleic anhydride, and the subsequent hydrolysis. The polymers had quite similar structures to the natural polymes and were soluble in water, They showed high hypochromicities up to 49% and excimer fluorescence due to the base stacking, and polyelectrolyte behavior. Since the polymers had compact structrures, depyrimidinations, the release of pyrimidine bases from the polymer backbone, occurred in aqueous solutions with higher rates compared with those of the natural polymers.

Disposal Characteristics of Dredged Material from the Hopper Dredger (호퍼준설선의 투기특성)

  • Hydraulic dredgers(Hopper dredger) are the most important piece of equipment in the entire harbor engineering field, and most suitable for the removal of sand and weakly consloidated sediment such as silt. In maintenance dredging, specially confined harbor or congested passage area, Hopper dredger is user most popularly because less obstruction and danger to navigation than other mostly stationary dredgers. Investigation of the physical behave of dredged material disposal in coastal water from the Hopper dredger includes estimations of pattern as well as thickness of material on the bottom. Calculation based on vertical settling and horizontal advection of single particles ignore the effects of bulk properties of the disposed marterial, vertical and horizontal diffusion. and material dilution due to the entrainment of ambient water during descent. This paper focuses on the analysis of dredging and dumping characteristics and the spatial and temporal changes in the dumping fields for the water column and bottom at a hypothetically confined coastal water. This model accounts the behavior of material after release from the hopper dredger. It is shown that the model describes the qualitative feature of prototype dumping process and its response.

  • Acupuncture therapy has demonstrated efficacy in several clinical areas, and of these areas the understanding of pain has progressed immensely in the last two decades. The underlying mechanisms of acupuncture in general and the analgesic effect in particular are still not clearly delineated. The leading hypothesis include the effects of local stimulation, neuronal gating, release of endogenous opiates, and the placebo effect. Accumulating evidence suggests that the central nervous system(CNS) is essential for the processing of these effects, via its modulation of the autonomic nervous system, neuro-immune system, and hormonal regulation. These processes tap into basic survival mechanisms. As such, understanding the effects of acupuncture within a neuroscience-based framework becomes vital. We propose a model which incorporates the stress-induced hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis(HPA-axis) model of Akil et al., the cholinergic anti-inflamatory observations of Tracey et al., and Petrovic et al.

  • Glass/resin/glass laminate structures are used in the automobile, biological, and display industries. The sandwich structures are used in the micro/nanoimprint process to fabricate a variety of functional components and devices in fields such as display, optics, MEMS, and bioindustry. In the process, micrometer- or nanometer-scale patterns are transferred onto the substrate using UV curing resins. The demodling process has an important impact on productivity. In this study, we investigated the fracture behavior of glass/resin/glass laminates fabricated via UV curing. We performed measurements of the adhesion force and the interfacial energy between the mold and resin materials using the four-point flexural test. The bending-test measurements and the load-displacement curves of the laminates indicate that the fracture behavior is influenced by the interfacial energy between the mold and resin and the resin thickness.

  • Resilient modulus has been used for characterizing the stress-strain behavior of subgrade soils subjected to traffic loadings. With the recent release of the M-E Design Guide, highway agencies are further encouraged to implement the resilient modulus test to improve subgrade design. The subgrade design for the trackbed, however, is primarily relying on the static test results such as $K_{30}$ and deformation modulus, Ev. Therefore applicability of the resilient modulus for the design of trackbed needs to be evaluated. In this study, physical property tests, unconfined compressive tests and resilient modulus tests were conducted to assess the resilient and permanent strain behavior of 14 cohesive subgrade soils. A predictive model for estimating the resilient modulus is proposed based on the results of unconfined compressive tests and tangent elastic modulus, unconfined compressive strength, failure strain, secant modulus at peak, and yield strain. The predicted resilient moduli using the predictive models compared satisfactorily with measured ones. Although the permanent strain occurs during the resilient modulus test, the permanent behavior of subgrade soils is currently not taken into consideration.

  • The initiation and growth of microcracks or microvoids inside concrete results in the progressive degradation of concrete. This damage processing along processing along with plastic deformation is main cause of nonlinear behavior of concrete. In this study, a continuum damage model of concrete is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of concrete due to damage and elasto-plastic deformation. Anisotropic damage tensor is used to describe the anisotropy of concrete and hypothesis of equivalent elastic energy is used to define the effective elastic tensor. The damage model including the damage evolution law and constitutive equation is derived with damage variable and damage surface which is defined by damage energy release rate by using the Helmholtz free energy and dissipation potential based on the thermodynamic principles. By adopting a typical plasticity model of concrete, plasticity of concrete is included to this model. Afinite element analysis program implemented with this model was developed and finite element analysis was performed for the analyses of concrete subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loadings. Comparison of the results of analysis with those of experiments and other models shows that the model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete.

Self-organized Pullulan/Deoxycholic Acid Nanogels: Physicochemical Characterization and Anti-cancer Drug-releasing Behavior

  • The objective of this study was to develop new self-organized nanogels as a means of drug delivery in patients with cancer. Pullulan (PUL) and deoxycholic acid (DOCA) were conjugated through an ester linkage between the hydroxyl group in PUL and the carboxyl group in DOCA. Three types of PUL/DOCA conjugates were obtained, differing in the number of DOCA substitutions (DS; 5, 8, or 11) per 100 PUL anhydroglucose units. The physicochemical properties of the resulting nanogels were characterized by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The mean diameter of DS 11 was the smallest (approx. 100 nm), and the size distribution was unimodal. To determine the organizing behavior of these conjugates, we calculated their critical aggregation concentrations (CACs) in a 0.01-M phosphate buffered saline solution. They were $10.5{\times}10^{-4}mg/mL,\;7.2{\times}10^{-4} mg/mL,\;and\;5.6{\times}10^{-4} mg/mL$ for DS 5, 8, and 11, respectively. This indicates that DOCA can serve as a hydrophobic moiety to create self-organized nanogels. To monitor the drug-releasing behavior of these nanogels, we loaded doxorubicin (DOX) onto the conjugates. The DOX-loading efficiency increased with the degree of DOCA substitution. The release rates of DOX from PUL/DOCA nanogels varied inversely with the DS. We concluded that the PUL/DOCA nanogel has some potential for use as an anticancer drug carrier because of its low CAC and satisfactory drug-loading capacity.

The Nitrogen Behavior and Budget in Lake Paldang (팔당호의 질소거동과 수지)

  • We studied the nitrogen behavior and budget of Lake Paldang from March to December 2008. The particulate nitrogen (PN) concentrations ranged from 7 to 13% of the total nitrogen concentration (TN) in the stream inflows, the downstream outflow, and the lake water. The nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$) concentration ranged from 67 to 78% of the TN. In the three rivers of Lake Paldang, Gyeongan River (In3 site) had the highest average of the TN, 5.037 mgN/L, but North Han River (In2 site) had the lowest average TN, 1.683 mgN/L. South Han River (In1 site) had the average TN of 2.399 mgN/L. In the dam discharge, TN showed the average 2.063 mgN/L. In the lake water, L4 site (Gyeongan River area) had the highest average TN, 3.781 mgN/L, but L3 site (North Han River) had the lowest average TN, 1.587 mgN/L. Total input of nitrogen loads to Lake Paldang was about 30,875 ton/year in 2008. Inflow rivers contributed 30,643 ton/year (South Han River: 18,111 ton/year (59%), North Han River: 11,333 ton/year (37%), and Gyeongan River: 1,199 ton/year (4%)). The atmospheric deposition had 135 ton/year, the nitrogen release from the bottom sediments had 88 ton/year, and macrophytes had 9 ton/year. Total output of nitrogen loads from Lake Paldang was about 31,256 ton/year. The downstream from dam contributed 29,877 ton/year, and the sediment deposition was 1,379 ton/year.

A Study on Ventilation Effects on Smoke Behavior in Rescue Station for Tunnel Fires (철도터널 화재시 구난역 내의 연기거동에 미치는 배연효과에 관한 연구)

  • The present study investigates the ventilation effects on smoke spreading with the rescue stations. Experiments for tunnel fires were carried out for n-heptane pool em at different fire locations, and the heat release rates (HRR) were obtained by addition, using the commercial code (FLUENT), the present article presents numerical results for smoke behavior in railway tunnels with rescue station, and it uses the MVHS (Modified Volumetric Heat Source) model for estimation of combustion products resulting from the fire source determined from the HRR measurement. As a result, it is found that smoke propagation is prevented successfully by the fire doors located inside the cross-passages and especially, the smoke behavior in the accident tunnel can be controlled through the ventilation system because of substantial change in smoke flow direction in the cross-passages.
