  • In the paper, a selection relaying scheme is proposed and analyzed in which relays retransmit the erroneous packet without checking the correctness of their received packets. The proposal not only achieves the full diversity gain in a limited number of retransmissions but it also gets better performance than other schemes. Additionally, a threshold in the number of retransmissions and the closed form expression for packet error rate (PER) are derived. Simulation results are given to confirm the accuracy of analysis and to significantly prove advantages of the proposal.

  • Cooperative relays can provide spatial diversity and improve performance of wireless communications. In this paper, we study subcarrier power allocation at the relays for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless systems. For cooperative relay with amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) algorithms, we investigate the impact of power allocation to the mutual information between the source and destination. From our simulation results on word~error-rate (WER) performance, we find that the DF algorithm with power allocation provides better performance than that of AF algorithm in a single path relay network because the former is able to eliminate channel noise at each relay. For the multiple path relay network, however, the network structure is already resistant to noise and channel distortion, and AF approach is a more attractive choice due to its lower complexity.

  • Protection and control systems play a prominent part in avoiding power delivery interruptions and help to get a fast and secure restoration when a failure occurs. In order to meet the higher functional requirements on modern power system, protection speed, selectivity, sensitivity, dependability, and security are essential to ensure reliability. These functions on be satisfied by taking advantage of microprocessor and communication technologies, and digital protection relays (systems) have been developed and applied to real power system enhancing reliability and saving money. It is necessary to have a tool to analyze the functions and algorithms of digital relays for installing them to power system. The purpose of this study is to develop a digital relay simulation program to estimate digital relay performances during system faults. Components of digital protective relay including analog filter, sampling unit, digital filter, and relay logic are modeled in this program.

  • In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation scheme for amplify and forward cooperative diversity with relay selection. In order to select best relay, it is necessary to know channel state information (CSI) at the destination. Most of the previous works, however, assume that perfect CSI is available at the destination. In addition, when the number of relay is increased it is difficult to estimate CSI through all relays within coherence time of a channel because of the large amount of frame overhead for channel estimation. In a proposed channel estimation scheme, each terminal has distinct pilot signal which is orthogonal each other. By using orthogonal property of pilot signals, CSI is estimated over two pilot signal transmission phases so that frame overhead is reduced significantly. Due to the orthogonal property among pilot signals, estimation error does not depend on the number of relays. Simulation result shows that the proposed channel estimation scheme provides accurate CSI at the destination.

  • In this paper, a framework for power allocation of downlink transmissions in orthogonal frequency division multiple access-based decode-and-forward cellular relay networks is investigated. We consider a system with a single base station communicating with multiple users assisted by multiple relays. The relays have limited power which must be divided among the users they support in order to maximize the data rate of the whole network. Advanced power allocation schemes are crucial for such networks. The optimal relay power allocation which maximizes the data rate is proposed as an upper bound, by finding the optimal power requirement for each user based on knapsack problem formulation. Then by considering the fairness, a new relay power allocation scheme, called weighted-based scheme, is proposed. Finally, an efficient power reallocation scheme is proposed to efficiently utilize the power and improve the data rate of the network. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed power allocation schemes can significantly improve the data rate of the network compared to the traditional scheme.

  • Distance relaying is one of the most commonly used protection schemes in the high voltage transmission systems. In this scheme, coordination between the primary and backup relays is very critical for the power system security. This paper reports an rule-based methodology for checking and correction of miscoordination problems in the distance relaying. Diagnosis rules achieving an accurate but simple checking have been developed through the geometric analysis of the impedance characteristics of the distance relays. Heuristic rules having the pratical power for miscoordination correction are suggested. The proposed method has proved very effective through the several case studies on the actual systems.

  • Cooperative transmission is an effective solution to improve the performance of wireless communications over fading channels without the need for physical co-located antenna arrays. In this paper, selection combining is used at the destination instead of maximal ratio combing to optimize the structure of destination and to reduce power consumption in selective decode-and-forward relaying networks. For an arbitrary number of relays, an exact and closed-form expression of the bit error rate (BER) is derived for M-PAM, M-QAM, and M-PSK, respectively, in both independent identically distributed and independent but not identically distributed Rayleigh fading channels. A variety of simulations are performed and show that they match exactly with analytic ones. In addition, our results show that the optimum number of relays depend not only on channel conditions (operating SNRs) but also on modulation schemes which to be used.

  • This paper considers 2-hop wireless cooperative communications networks with fixed decode-and-forward relays. Specifically, we first derive the closed-form BER expression for theoretically evaluating the end-to-end performance of these networks. Then, based on this expression and long-tenn fading statistics, we propose a power allocation method for source and relay. Such a method brings about multiple advantages in tenn of spectral efficiency and implementation complexity over other power allocation methods based on instantaneous fading statistics. A variety of numerical results reveal that the cooperative communications scheme with the proposed power allocation significantly outperforms that with the equal power allocation and the direct transmission scheme for any position of the relay subject to the same total transmit power constraint.

  • This paper presents the new methods of fault diagnosis through multiple alarm processing of protective relays and circuit breakers in power systems using probabilistic neural networks. In this paper, fault section detection neural network (FSDNN) for fault diagnosis is designed using the alarm information of relays or circuit breakers. In contrast to conventional methods, the proposed FSDNN determines the fault section directly and fast. To show the possibility of the proposed method, it is simulated through simulation panel for Sinyangsan substation system in KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) and the case studies show the effectiveness of the probabilistic neural network mehtod for the fault diagnosis.

  • Recently, the ${\mu}$-processor based-controlled systems instead of conventional relays circuitry are widely used to industrial applications, and also those technology is available to railway signalings which are safety-critical systems. However, the safety and reliability of software for those systems are harder to demonstrate than in traditional relays circuitry because the faults or errors can not be analyzed and predicted to those systems. So, the safety problems are crucial more and more in ${\mu}$-processor based-controlled system. In this paper, the Grafcet language, the graphical and mathematical form, is used to obtain the high-level safety and reliability of software control logic. The general description for Grafcet notation are provided. And some partial of interlocking logic are formally modeled and simulated by Grafcet language and graphical windows.
