  • In this paper, a study on fracture characteristics of chemically prestressed mortar with addition of expansive additives was carried out. Uni-axial tension tests with reinforced mortar specimen restrained by embedded reinforcing bar and three point bending tests with notched steel fiber reinforced beams were carried out to verify the characteristics of the cracking behavior, the tension stiffening effect due to bond between rebar and mortar, and fracture characteristic. Tension stiffening curve for the chemically prestressed mortar was obtained from uni-axial tension test. And increased fracture energy due to the chemical prestress was also obtained from bending test and tension softening curve for chemically prestressed mortar was also obtained.

  • R.C. bridges may require strengthening during the service life. The main cause of durability problem of R.C. bridges is the corrosion of reinforcing steel. For this reason, researches to solve the problem have been conducted but the achievements are just for improving, not the solution. Fiber Reinforced Polymers are recognized as the alternative materials for solving the problem due to the excellent corrosion-resistant property, light-weight and higher strength than steel. This paper presents experimental results and theoretical consideration of bond test for new type GFRP rebar

  • The objective of this study is to take the first step in creating a user-friendly health monitoring system for recycled aggregate concrete structure using acoustic emission(AE). Each specimen was a cube, the edge of which was 150mm. For pull-out tests, a steel rebar, 13mm in diameter, was embedded in the center of each specimen and casting directions(i.e., vertical and horizontal) were considered in this paper. The AE parameters were analyzed for damage levels(i.e. internal cracking stage, pull-out stage) of all specimens. Results from this study show that event, duration versus amplitude of a signal, showed a clear difference for different loading stages depending upon the concrete casting directions.

  • Recently, as the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increases, research is needed to increase the ductility of the columns in order to prevent the collapse of structures. In this study, to evaluate the performance of columns reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars, the FE model for the dynamic analysis of structures reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars for circular and rectangular columns is to be verified using the results of uniaxial compression experiments in the previous study. As a result, the experimental value of the column reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcement and the result value related to the dynamic analysis showed similar behavior, and the reliability was high. As a result of the analysis, the usability of the rectangular column reinforced with continuous lateral reinforcing bars was confirmed because the dissipated energy performance of the columns reinforced with spiral reinforcing bars was higher than that of the columns reinforced with band reinforcing bars.

  • The primary purposes of this study are to understand a fundamental effects of electro-deposition on reinforcing steel in saturated Ca(OH)2 electrolyte, and evaluate the corrosion rates of rebars under cyclic 3wt.%NaCl immersion and dry corrosion environment. The three cement mortar specimens with cover thickness 5, 10 and 30mm, were prepared in the experiment. To monitor the corrosion rates of rebars in mortar, the three cement mortar specimens were exposed to 110 wet-drying cycles(8-hour-immersion in 3wt.%NaCl and 16-hour-drying in a room temperature) in the laboratory. During the wet-dry cycles, the polarization resistance, Rp, and solution resistance, Rs, were continuously measured. The instantaneous corrosion rates of rebars on the effect of electro-depositing with sat. Ca(OH)2 electrolyte were estimated from obtained R-1p and degrees of wetness were estimated from Rs values. From the experimental results, the corrosion rates of rebars were greatly accelerated by wet/dry cycles. During the mortars exposed to drying condition, the large increases in the corrosion rates were showed at all rebar surfaces in three mortar specimen, attributed from the accelerated reduction rates of dissolved oxygen in drying process. However, the corrosion rates on rebar surface electrochemically deposited with sat. Ca(OH)2 electrolyte showed the clear decreases, caused by calcium deposits in the porous rust layer.

  • The primary purposes of this study are to understand a fundamental aspect of current uniformity around a reinforcing bar (rebar) in cement mortar, and to develop an accurate monitoring method in a wet-dry cycling process with the alternative current (AC) impedance method. Three cement mortar specimens with two embedded rebars were prepared in the laboratory. As a main variable, the distance between two rebars was designed to be 10, 20 and 30 mm with the same thickness of 20 mm. To simulate the corrosion of rebars in concrete structures in a marine environment, three cement mortar specimens were exposed to 15 wet-drying cycles (24-hour-immersion in seawater and 48-hour-drying in a room temperature) in the laboratory. It was observed that the potential level shifted to a noble value during corrosion potential monitoring, which is attributed to acceleration of dissolved oxygen diffusion at the drying process. AC impedance was measured in a frequency range from 100 kHz to 1 mHz on a wet-drying process. A theoretical model was proposed to explain the interface condition between the rebars and cement mortar by using the equivalent circuit consisting of a solution resistance, a charge transfer resistance and a CPE (constant phase element). It was observed that the diffusion impedance appeared in a low frequency range as corrosion of rebars progresses. At the drying stage of the wet-drying cycles, the currents line for monitoring tended to be non-uniform at the interface of rebar/mortar, being phase shift, ${\theta}$, close to $-45^{\circ}$.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a reasonable analytical method for the estimation of overall behavior characteristic from cracking to yielding of rebar and crushing of concrete and seismic performance of reinforced concrete shear wall with high-strength reinforcing bar. A total of 8 specimens of reinforced concrete walls which have constant aspect ratio and a variety of variables such as reinforcement ratio, reinforcement yielding strength, reinforcement details, concrete design strength, section shape and whether lateral restraint hoop were selected and the analysis was performed by using a non-linear finite element analysis program (RCAHEST) applying the proposed constitutive equation by the authors. The mean and coefficient of variation for maximum load from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 1.04 and 8%. The mean and coefficient of variation for displacement corresponding maximum load from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 1.17 and 19% respectively. The analytical results were predicted relatively well the fracture mode and the overall behavior until fracture for all specimens. These results are expected to be used as basic data for application of high-strength reinforcing bar to design codes in the future.

  • Quantity takeoff and cost estimates in Korea are carried out in practice without any clear standards or standards. Especially, quantity takeoff of Reinforcing bar and BoQ documentation process is very complex using 2D drawings. In this study, 10 case sites were analyzed for the status of inefficient quantity takeoff and how the statement was prepared. In order to solve this problem, this study presented a method for calculating the quantity of rebars through the ratio of concrete volume for schools, offices, and apartment buildings, and analyzed the accuracy of results. In the future, it is expected that the error range can be reduced by defining the factors affecting the results and calculating the correction value for them.

  • As embedded reinforcing suffer from corrosion process, the bond strength and stiffness are reduced, and the structure proceed, eventually, to the deterioration of the concrete, shortening the service life of concrete structures rapidly. In order to deal with these problems, a multitude of researches have been carried out up to this date to evaluate the bond characteristics of RC members, i.e. by artificially inducing rapid corrosion of the reinforcing bar. These artificial corrosion methods, however, could not represent the real condition, resulting in the possibility of overestimation for the RC members in real situation. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the difference in the bond characteristics for RC members corroded by different corrosion methods (artificial rapid method, natural method). For the case of natural corrosion, the brittle failure was observedeven for the case of the area ofcorrosion of 50%. And, the bond strength decreased by about 10% or more for the caseofspecimens with the area of corrosion of 80% or above. Especially, the deterioration of concrete starts at the state of low corrosion level for the case of natural corrosion. Thus, the safety of RC members must be assessed and evaluated more carefully for the naturally corroded members than for the RC concrete members corroded rapidly by artificial method.

  • Reinforcing bars, a major component of the pre-fab structure, adheres to the existing on-site assembly method and attempts to develop and commercialize the technology of the pre-assembly method, but the effect is insignificant. Welded Wire / Bar Mat (WBM) has various advantages such as commercialization of rebar through machine manufacturing to improve workability, but it is different from the existing design and the construction method is different from the previous one. Therefore, to maximize the advantages of WBM and improve productivity, manufacturing, transportation, and construction from the design stage should be considered based on BIM from the initial design stage. In this paper, the concept of the design support system for the WBM was established based on the use of BIM in concrete reinforcement and the preliminary research on the WBM. WBM conversion design was performed for the existing prefabricated members, and based on this, the exchange format and system of the master prefabricated model with the WBM design data were set up. As a result of the pilot test, it was found that the traditional reinforcing bar information extracted from the master prefab model has transmitted 100% accurately. As for the WBM information, 100% of the information on the straight reinforcement was transmitted and represented, and the information on the bent reinforcement was found to have a 90% recall in the master BIM tool.
