  • Rock Bolt generally utilizes deformed reinforcing bar welded from structural steel of which strength is higher than required for making advantageous use of the support function of ground. In the condition with highly corrosive underground water, however, problem frequently occurs on tunnel and slope stabilization in terms of repair, rehabilitation and maintenance issues due to the destruction of Rock Bolt by corrosion of steel. A structural performance evaluation for GFRP Rock Bolt was conducted for the purpose of resolving the foregoing problem and at the same time developing a permanently-usable support material. This study intended to evaluate the safety factor of GFRP Rock Bolt by implementing the slope stability interpretation via structural analysis on the basis of its structural characteristics derived from both tensile force function test and shear force function test. It is judged based on the results that GFRP Rock Bolt would secure sufficient ground stability as an alternative material for existing Steel Rock Bolt.

  • Masonry structures have been used throughout the world for the construction of residential buildings. However, from a structural point of view, the masonry material is characterized by a very low tensile strength. Moreover, the bearing and shear capacity of masonry walls have been found to be vulnerable to earthquakes. In this study, to improve the seismic performance of masonry walls, hexagonal blocks were developed and six masonry walls made with hexagonal block were tested to failure under reversed cyclic lateral loading. This paper focuses on an experimental investigation of different types of wall with hexagonal blocks, i.e. walls with different hexagonal blocks and with different reinforcing bar arrangements, subjected to applied cyclic loads. The cracking, damage patterns and hysteretic feature were evaluated. Results from the hexagonal masonry wall were shown more damage reduction and less brittle failure in comparison to the existing rectangular masonry walls.

  • The main purpose of this the sutdy is to develop the reinforced earth structure design method considering induced stresses and deflections resulting from placement and compaction of soil. In this paper, the new reinforcement Geolog developed by the author is also introduced which is being used as one of the effective earth reinforcing structure against compaction induced stresses. This study adopted the Seed's bilinear model in the estimation of the com paction induced stresses and compute the peak lateral stresses during compaction by doubled Boussinessq's elastic solution of mirror image theory, thereafter, calculate the residual compaction induced lateral stresses from the above peak lateral stress by the residual fraction. It is considered to be reasonable that the compaction induced stresses be added to the lateral earth pressures estimated from conventional gravity analysis considering the actual stresses during service life of the structures. "GEOLOG", a composite of steel bar and attached concrete stopper is found to be effective against tension and pull - out failure. In this paper, the design method considering the compaction induced stresses and the effect of Geolog reinforcement is suggested for the remforced earth structures where backkfill settlement on displacements are not allowed as in the cases of the bridge abutments or double faced reinforcement earth structures.tructures.

  • For reinforced concrete members, bond strength is one of the important factors between the two materials: the concrete and the reinforcing element. The bond strength of Aramid Fiber Reinforced Polymer (AFRP) rebar was tested using the pull-out method. Presented were comparison results of the bond strength between AFRP rebar and deformed steel bars from the test. Embedded lengths and diameters of the rebar were taken into account as parameters. The bond stress-slip responses and failure modes of AFRP rebar were evaluated. It was found that the bond stress-slip responses of AFRP rebar were similar to those of deformed steel bars. As the diameter of rebar increased, the pull-out load increased. In addition, it was shown that the bond strength of an AFRP rebar was approximately 54% compared with that of a deformed steel bar.

  • The bond behavior between concrete and reinforcement is a important requirement for reinforced concrete constructions. For practical application, it is very important to study bond behavior of reinforcing bars in recycled fine aggregate concrete. Therefore, pull-out test in order to investigate the bond behavior between recycled fine aggregate concrete and deformed bars was performed. Recycled fine aggregate concrete replacement ratios (i.e., 0% and 100%) and positions of deformed bars (i.e., vertical and horizontal position) were considered as variables in this study. Test results were compared with the bond strength requirement recommended by CEB-FIP code. Based on the test results, It was found that the bond strength between the recycled fine aggregate concrete and deformed bars were influenced by both recycled fine aggregate concrete replacement ratios and positions of deformed bars. The reduction of bonded area at the soffit of horizontal reinforcement caused by concrete bleeding was observed in H type specimen. So, Only V type and HB specimen satisfied the bond strength requirement recommended by CEB-FIP code.

  • According to the increase of power demand and expansion of downtown, it is necessary to install transformers additionally in operating substations and construct substations in residential area. But the public complaint has been increased due to the transformer noise of the substation. KEPCO has used a vibration preventing pad, various soundproof walls and an enclosure to transformers in outdoor substations, and a soundproof door, shutter and wind-path soundproof equipment in indoor substations to block the sound propagation from the transformers. But these noise reduction methods are not satisfied. It should be considered to reduce transformer noise itself. To shut out sound emitted from transformers, we developed a soundproof technology that wall up reinforcing bar by steel sheet. For the practical application of it, we analyzed the vibration characteristics of a transformer tank and reduction of noise according to soundproof plate. As a result, it is confirmed that the technology can reduce 11 [dB] of transformer noise.

  • The RC buildings which are constructed on the seaside are followed by KBC(2016) to achieve the minimization of durability damage. To control the corrosion of the reinforcing steel bar by salt attack, W/C should be under 0.4 and specified concrete strength is higher than 35MPa in the concrete/building construction standard specification. Even though it has been proved that the concrete mixed with mineral admixture such as blast furnace slag and fly ash etc. have high strength and durability in previous researches, the beneficial informations are not applied to the codes. Ready-mixed concretes which usually include the admixtures in Busan were tested to certify the salt attack durability. In the same specified concrete strength, remarkable salt attack durability was evaluated in comparison to OPC. For economical and reliable durability design, chloride ion diffusivity should be measured before applying to new building construction.

  • In this paper, the effect of corrosion level and crack width on the cohesive strength-slip behavior of corroded steel rebar and concrete interface is conducted. The existing studies mainly focus on the decrease in bond strength with respect to the level of corrosion; there are, however, few studies on the decrease in cohesive strength according to the crack width of the concrete surface due to corrosion. Therefore, in this study, a series of tests for the cohesive strength, slip behavior and mass loss of the reinforcing bar is evaluated at the surface of corroded rebar and concrete. It is found that the tendency to decrease the bond strength is closely related to the crack width rather than the corrosion level. Hence, to determine the degradation performance for the bond strength-slip behavior relation, the occurrence of cracks on the concrete surface can be a suitable index.

  • This study focused on the development of surface deformations of GFRP rebars with a better bond characteristic for reinforcing concrete, and simultaneously, of GFRP rebars with more simple and economic production process. This research paper describes a development and bond performance of GFRP rebar with molded deformations, which is composed of polymer resin and milled glass fiber. To determine proper mix ration of milled fibers, material test of hardened epoxy and pullout tests of GFRP rebar with various mix ratio were conducted. The test results indicate that the new strategy of using a mixture of epoxy resin and milled fiber could be successfully applied to a surface structure of GFRP rebar to enhance bond with concrete. The bearing resistance of the ribs was further enhanced by the milled fibers at mechanical and environmental loading state.

  • This paper presents full scale model tests on the various types of model piles carried out to estimate the behavior of laterally loaded steel-concrete composite piles. Subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the reaction of ground in laboratory condition. In addition, lateral behavior of piles under working load condition was estimated using composite loading system, which is available for independent loading in vertical and horizontal direction. Steel-concrete composite piles showed higher efficiency in lateral resistance rather than drilled shaft made of reinforced concrete. The lateral resistance of composite pile was larger than the summation of steel pile and concrete pile due to the composite effect by steel casing. The effect of shear key or strength of concrete on the behavior of composite pile was examined. The substitution of reinforcing bar by steel casing was also investigated.
