  • Wasting fiberous residues from the cutting processes of steel materials at an iron-Works were mixed with concrete. The strength and toughness of steel fiber concrete with different steel contents were tested in a laboratory. The test results showed that the steel fiber residues can be used for the reinforcement of concrete. The potential applications of such product include floor constructions for facilities like dairy barns, grain storages, and machinery shops. The test results are as follows. 1. The compressive strengths of steel fiber concrete with one percent steel content by volume were 20 percent greater than that of plain concrete. The treatments also increased the concrete toughness by 96 percent. 2. When applied to tensile forces, the steel fiber concrete showed the increased strengths by 20 percent, and the toughness by 48 percent. 3. The steel content levels greater than or equal to 1.5 percent by volume resulted in the decreases of the compressive and tensile strengths of steel fiber concrete by 10 percent as compared to plain concrete. The concrete toughness increased with the steel contents. 4. The reinforcement effects of steel fiber depend on the quality of fiber material being used. Good steel fiber for concrete reinforcement appears to be uniform in shape and component, fine and long, and round-shaped.

  • Corrosion of steel reinforcement is a major factor in the deterioration of harbour and bridge structure. Steel corrosion in concrete must be checked for assessing the condition of a reinforced concrete structure. There are several ways how to measure the corrosion condition of reinforced concrete, but the corrosion potential measurement is a very simple, rapid, cost-effective and non-destructive technique to evaluate the severity of corrosion in reinforced concrete structure, therefore commonly used by engineers. However some particular situations may not relate to the reinforcement corrosion probability and a simple comparison of the corrosion potential data with the ASTM C876 Standard on steel reinforcement corrosion probability could be meaningless and not give reliable informations because of environment factors as oxygen concentration, chloride content, concrete resistance. Therefore this paper explains the risk of corrosion assessment in reinforced concrete structure and how many factors can affect the reliability of the corrosion potential data.

  • When RC beams are strengthened for flexure with steel plate, reinforced member has initial strain due to the dead load and is subject to partial damage. Strain of steel strengthening is zero at initial state. The effect of strengthening flexural member might be influenced by the quantity of initial strain. In this study, when He beams are strengthened for flexure with steel plate, its behavior is experimentally compared for the reinforcement efficiency of members due to the existence of different levels of initial strain. It is confirmed that reinforcement efficiency varies depending on the difference of initial strain.

  • An experimental study was performed on the pull-out behavior of 90-deg standard hooks from exterior beam-column connections. The effects of lateral confinement and fiber reinforcement of joint area were investigated. It was concluded ; (1) Substitution of the transverse column (confining) reinforcement with steel fibers at the joint region effectively reduces the extent of cracking in exterior joints caused by pull-out of hooked bars; and (2) The strength and ductility of hooked bars under pull-out forces are positively influenced by substituting the conventional confining reinforcement of exterior joints with steel fibers. Application of steel fibers to exterior joints seems to be an effective technique for improving the anchorage conditions of hooked bars, and also for reducing the congestion of reinforcement in exterior beam-column connections.

  • At this, in this study, some tests were conducted to come up with a method to minimize intervention, to reduce the secondary damage to original materials, and to produce remarkable reinforcing effects. The followings show objective standards. The proportion of original material to steel reinforcement bar (the ratio of steel reinforcement bar) needs to be calculated in light of weathering intensity. Second, in the case of partial damage, prosthetic treatment is applied to add new stone materials to original materials. In that case, the ratio of steel reinforcement bar should be calculated based on material that is highly resistant to weathering. With the results of this study, it is possible to suggest conditions that can structurally stabilize stone cultural heritage, according to the weathering area. As a result, the ratio of steel reinforcement bars can be 0.13 to 0.23 in the case of $800kgf/cm^2$ or less, 0.24 to 0.28 in $800kgf/cm^2$ or higher, and 0.29 to 0.5 in $1200kgf/cm^2$ or higher. In particular, there is the need to take the coefficient of rupture of stone material and the properties of the steel reinforcement bar into account in cases of calculating the ratio of steel reinforcement bars according to weathering intensity.

  • This study was conducted to identify the structural performance of the opening in a location close to the support point in the perforated beam system of steel beams. In addition, structural performance was determined through experiments on reinforced openings using vertical and horizontal steel plates. In the steel simple beam, it was found that the opening was in a position closer to the support point, half the height of the steel beam (D/2), which was more appropriate than the height of the steel beam (D). In addition, the reinforcement effect of horizontal steel plate was greater than that of vertical steel plate reinforcement. Structural performance was improved when there was no gap between openings and steel plates.

  • In this study, It was purpose to provide preliminary data for extension of the applicability of deep corrugated steel plate composite members by steel grade and shear reinforcement method. From the result of flexural test on deep corrugated plates composite members using GR40 and SS590, positive moment capacity was increased about 28% by SS590 steel. But to change steel grade was proved to have insignificant effects for increasement of negative moment capacity. In the moment test result of same overlapping length, Increasement rate of positive and negative moment capacity was not significantly improved by increasing the number of bolt. It was estimated to be due to the characteristics of bolt connection such as distance between centers of bolts, edge distance of bolt. In the test result on the spacing of shear reinforcement, positive moment capacity was increased and deformation of negative moment was reduced as the distance decrease. In the test result on the shape of shear reinforcement, positive and negative moment resistance was increased about 2% ~ 7% by U shaped shear reinforcement. In conclusion It was estimated that moment capacity of deep corrugated steel plate composite members are depend on steel grade of deep corrugated steel plate, spacing of shear reinforcement and reinforcing bar.

  • Strenght and ductility are major factors in the aseismic design of a bridge pier. In spite of good performance in both steel piers have not been used widely due to high cost. But with the filled-in concrete the steel pier have advantages compare to the steel pier only such as improved strength ductility fast construction small section and reasonable cost. In this paper concrete-filled steel piers are tested using quasi-static cyclic lateral load with constant axial load to evaluate the performance. The secondary reinforcement devices such as bolts corner plate and turn buckle are used inside of the piers to improve the ductility with minimum additional cost. Test results shows filled-in concrete and secondary reinforcement devices increase the strength and the ductility of the steel pier.

  • Recent construction activities and maintenance of marine facilities have been accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth in Korea. Marine concrete structures are exposed to salts an chloride from ocean environments. The corrosion of reinforcement steel caused by chloride-penetration into concrete may severely effect the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this research is to develop a durable concrete by investigating the corrosion resistance of various corrosion protection systems utilizing different water/cement ratio, silica fumes, corrosion inhibitors and etc. A tow-year verification test on various corrosion protection systems has been doing in the laboratory and at the seaside. Corrosion investigations on reinforcement steel are now under progress for more than 180 concrete specimen. Corrosion-related measurements include macrocell corrosion current, instant-off voltage between corroding and noncorroding reinforcement, chloride contents, the corroded surface areas on the reinforcement steel, and etc. A low level of corrosion is investigated on reinforcement steels in concrete specimen made with corrosion inhibitors or applied aqueous impregnating corrosion inhibitors into their surface, even though high chloride contents of concrete specimen.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the analytical model for the reinforcement bar connection in group-filled steel pipe sleeve, which consists of beam elements for the reinforcement bar and shell elements for the sleeve and the mortar and spring elements for the bond stress-slip relationship. In the reinforcement bar connection using grout-filled steel pipe sleeve, the major variables are the bond stiffness between reinforcement bar and mortar($K_1$) and between sleeve and mortar($K_2$). It is nearly difficult to predict the exact bond stiffness with the experimental results. Therefore, The linearly elastic analyses using ABAQUS, FEM package show the validity of the mathematical equations for the bond stiffness and the choice of material elements in this paper. To predict the behaviour between yield and ultimate tensile strength, the nonlinear analyses must be performed henceforth.
