The mechanical characteristic of reinforced concrete filled steel tubular (RCFT) structures are differed from that of concrete filled tubular steel (CFT) structures because the reinforcement in RCFT largely affects the performance of core concrete such as ductility, strength and toughness, and hence the performance of RCFT should be evaluated differently from CFT. To examine the effect axial reinforcement on bending performance, an investigation on RCFT beams with varying levels of axial reinforcement is performed by the means of numerical parametric study. According to the numerical simulation results with 13 different ratios of axial reinforcement, it is concluded that the reinforcement has obvious effect on bending capacity, and the neutral axis of RCFT is different from CFT, and an evaluation equation in which the effect of axial reinforcement is considered for ultimate bending strength of RCFT is proposed.

Recent construction activities and maintenance of marine facilities have been accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth in Korea. Marine concrete structures are exposed to salts an chloride from ocean environments. The corrosion of reinforcement steel caused by chloride-penetration into concrete may severely effect the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this research is to develop a durable concrete by investigating the corrosion resistance of various corrosion protection systems utilizing different water/cement ratio, silica fumes, corrosion inhibitors and etc. A tow-year verification test on various corrosion protection systems has been doing in the laboratory and at the seaside. Corrosion investigations on reinforcement steel are now under progress for more than 180 concrete specimen. Corrosion-related measurements include macrocell corrosion current, instant-off voltage between corroding and noncorroding reinforcement, chloride contents, the corroded surface areas on the reinforcement steel, and etc. A low level of corrosion is investigated on reinforcement steels in concrete specimen made with corrosion inhibitors or applied aqueous impregnating corrosion inhibitors into their surface, even though high chloride contents of concrete specimen.
In this study, a design process for reinforced concrete structures using the nonlinear FEM analysis is developed. Instead of using the nonlinear analysis to evaluate the required performance after design process, the nonlinear analysis is applied before designing the reinforcement arrangement inside the RC structures. An automatic reinforcement generator for computer aided reinforcement agreement is developed for this purpose. Based on a nonlinear FEM program for analyzing the reinforced concrete structure, a smart fictitious material model of steel, is proposed which can self-adjust the reinforcement to the required amount at the cracking location according to the load increment. Using this tool, the reinforcement ratio required at design load level can be decided automatically. In this paper, an example of RC beam with opening is used to verify the proposed process. Finally, a trial design process for a real size underground RC LNG tank is introduced.

In recent years, RC structures need reinforcement due to physical and chemical deterioration, reduction of serviceability and structural capacity. For reinforcement of RC structures, steel plate attachment, area increase and composite fiber sheet attachment methods are used, but there are some problems like weight increase, workability, quality control and fire resistance capacity. This study presents the effectiveness of flexural reinforcement of RC beams using composite rods that are inserted in high strength special purposed polymer mortar.

In this paper, the flexural capacity equation of FRP-bar reinforced concrete beams was verified by comparing the experimental results and flexural capacity obtained according to the ACI procedure. And, also the economic feasibility of FRP-bar reinforced concrete beams was analyzed by comparing nominal moment capacity of beams. The results of analysis were as follows, 1) GFRP concrete beams have lower flexural performance than reinforced concrete beams, whereas CFRP concrete beams have similar flexural performance to reinforced concrete beams under the same reinforcement ratio 2) Although the design moment increased as the compressive strength of concrete increased, the flexural performance of GFRP reinforced concrete beams was found to be lower than the reinforced concrete beams for all reinforcement ratios.
A comprehensive framework for numerical simulation of time-dependent performance change of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to chloride attack is presented in this paper. The system is composed of simplified computational models for transport of moisture and chloride ions in concrete pore structure and crack, corrosion of reinforcement in concrete and mechanical behavior of RC member with reinforcement corrosion. Service-life of RC structures under various conditions is calculated.
This paper proposes a novel iterative procedure for the design of planar reinforced concrete structures in which the reinforcement is designed for stresses calculated in a nonlinear finite element analysis. The procedure is intended as an alternative to strut and tie modeling for the design of complex structures like deep beams with openings. Practical reinforcement arrangements are achieved by grouping the reinforcement into user defined horizontal and vertical bands. Two alternative strategies are proposed for designing the reinforcement which are designated A and B. Design constraints are specified in terms of permissible stresses and strains in the reinforcement and strains in the concrete. A case study of a deep beam with an opening is presented to illustrate the method. Comparisons are made between design strategies A and B of which B is shown to be most efficient. The resulting reinforcement weights are also shown to compare favorably with those previously reported in the literature.

Generally, a lot of reinforcements are used in nuclear power plant concrete structures in order to improve the structural safety, but it may cause several potential problems due to the overcrowded reinforcement, such as the degradation of concrete quality, the construction delay and the increase of construction cost. In order to resolve these problems, structural test researches and code change studies on using high-strength reinforcement (Gr.80) in unclear power plant structures are under way, and there is good progress in code change of ASM BPVC.III.2 and ACI 349. This purpose of this study is to review the code change status ASM BPVC.III.2, ACI 349 under way to use the high-strength reinforcement in nuclear power plant structures. Also I will introduce the design optimization of NPP structures with high-strength reinforcements in order to maximize the effect and minimize the problem when using the high-strength reinforcements in NPP structures.
The use of low-ductility welded wire fabric (WWF) as a main tensile reinforcement in concrete slabs compromises the ductility of concrete structures. Lower ductility in concrete structures can lead to brittle and catastrophic failure of the structures. This paper presents the experimental study carried out on eight simply supported one-way slabs to study the structural behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with low-ductility WWF and steel fibers. The different types of steel fibers used were crimped fiber, hooked-end fiber and twincone fiber. The experimental results show that the ductility behavior of the slab specimens with low-ductility reinforcement was significantly improved with the inclusion of $40kg/m^3$ of twincone fiber. Distribution of cracks was prominent in the slabs with twincone fiber, which also indicates the better distribution of internal forces in these slabs. However, the slab reinforced only with low-ductility reinforcement failed catastrophically with a single minor crack and without appreciable deflection.
A detailed finite element modeling is presented for the simulation of the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete structures which manages to predict the nonlinear behavior of four different experimental setups with computational efficiency, robustness and accuracy. The proposed modeling method uses 8-node hexahedral isoparametric elements for the discretization of concrete. Steel rebars may have any orientation inside the solid concrete elements allowing the simulation of longitudinal as well as transverse reinforcement. Concrete cracking is treated with the smeared crack approach, while steel reinforcement is modeled with the natural beam-column flexibility-based element that takes into consideration shear and bending stiffness. The performance of the proposed modeling is demonstrated by comparing the numerical predictions with existing experimental and numerical results in the literature as well as with those of a commercial code. The results show that the proposed refined simulation predicts accurately the nonlinear inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete structures achieving numerical robustness and computational efficiency.
