  • The objective of the present study is to verify the validity of a new truss model for evaluating the contribution by arch action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams. The new truss model is based on the relationship between shear and bending moment in a beam subjected to combined shear and bending. The compatibility condition of the shear deformation that deviates from Bernoulli bending plane is formulated utilizing the smeared truss idealization with an inclined compression chord. The Modified Compression Filed Theory is employed to calculate the shear deformation of the web, and the relative axial displacements of the compression and the tension chord by the shear flow are also calculated. From this shear compatibility condition in a beam, the shear contribution by the arch action is numerically decoupled. Then the validity of the model is examined by applying the model to some selected test beams in literatures. On the basis of the analytical results, the contribution by the web to shear resistance can be constant and have an excellent linear correlation with the web reinforcement ratio. The present decoupling approach may provide a simple way for the assessment of the role of each parameter or mechanism that affects the ultimate shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams.

  • In this study, twenty four steel-fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams using recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) were manufactured to examine the shear behavior of SFRC and to determine the beams' ultimate shear strengths. The RCA replacement ratio was fixed at 30%. The variables studied in this investigation are: (1) shear span-to-depth ratios (a/d) of 2, 3 and 4; (2) longitudinal reinforcement ratio (${\rho}$) of 0.008 and 0.0127; and (3) steel fiber volume fractions ($V_f$) of 0, 0.5, 0.75 and 1%. Test results were analyzed and then compared with the findings and proposals of various other researchers. Based on the test results, the more steel fiber volume fraction is increased, the large crack resistance and shear strength are exhibited. Most of the experimental data is higher than the theoretical value. Therefore, steel-fiber reinforced concrete beams using recycled coarse aggregates are suggested to be applied for building structures.

  • In case of retrofitting a concrete structure subjected to blast load by using retrofit materials such as FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer), appropriate ductility as well as raising stiffness must be obtained. But the previous approximate and simplified models, which have been generally used in the design and analysis of structures subjected to blast load, cannot accurately consider effects on retrofit materials. Problems on the accuracy and reliability of analysis results have also been pointed out. In addition, as the response of concrete and reinforcement on dynamic load is different from that on static load, it is not appropriate to use material properties defined in the previous static or quasi-static conditions to in calculating the response on the blast load. In this study, therefore, an accurate HFPB (high fidelity physics based) finite element analysis technique, which includes material models considering strength increase, and strain rate effect on blast load with very fast loading velocity, has been suggested using LS-DYNA, an explicit analysis program. Through the suggested analysis technique, the behavior on the blast load of retrofitted concrete walls using CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer) and GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) have been analyzed, and the retrofit capacity analysis has also been carried out by comparing with the analysis results of a wall without retrofit. As a result of the analysis, the retrofit capacity showing an approximate $26{\sim}28%$ reduction of maximum deflection, according to the retrofit, was confirmed, and it is judged ate suggested analysis technique can be effectively applicable in evaluating effectiveness of retrofit materials and techniques.

  • This paper presents the tension stiffening behavior from experimental results of each 6 amorphous steel fibers and normal steel fibers reinforced direct tensile specimens with the main variables such as cover thickness to bar diameter ratio. A tension stiffening effect for steel fiber reinforced RC tension members improve on the increase in cover thickness, and also amorphous steel fiber is usually superior to normal steel fiber. The reinforcement of steel fibers controlled the splitting cracks and led to significant increase in the tension stiffening effect. In particular, if cover thickness is more than twice the bar diameter, the amorphous steel fiber reinforced specimen is controlled the splitting crack and increased the tension stiffening effect. And, the tension stiffening effect of amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete tension members is different to current structural design code provision.

  • The effects of earthquakes can be devastating especially to existing structures that are not based on earthquake resistant design. This study proposes a steel grid shear wall that can provide a sufficient lateral resistance and can be used as a seismic retrofit method. The pushover analysis was performed on RC structure with and without the proposed steel grid shear wall. Obtain the performance point that the target structure for seismic loads applied to evaluate the response and performance levels. The capacity spectrum at performance point is nearly elastic range, so satisfied the performance objectives(LS level). And response modification factor(R factor) were calculated from the pushover analysis. The R factor approach is currently implemented to reflect inelastic ductile behavior of the structures and to reduce elastic spectral demands from earthquakes to the design level. The R factor increases from 2.17 to 3.25 was higher than the design criteria. As a result, according to reinforcement by steel grid shear wall, strength, stiffness, and ductility of the low-rise RC structure has been appropriately improved.

  • We synthesized potassium titanates having splinter and plate shape and evaluated frictional and wear properties of brake pad using them as reinforcements in friction materials. For splinter-shaped potassium titanates, potassium tetratitanate (K2O·4TiO2, PT4) with plate shape was prepared, then K ion of the titanate was leached by acid to make potassium hexatitanate (K2O·6TiO2, PT6), which was transformed to splinter-shaped PT6 by thermal treatment at 800℃. Plate-shaped potassium magnesium titanate (K0.8Mg0.4Ti1.6O4, PMT) was prepared by adding Mg in the potassium titanate using KCl as a flux. Using PT6 and PMT as reinforcements in friction materials of brake pad, we evaluated frictional and wear properties using 1/5-scale dynamometer. According to dynamometer test results, both reinforcements shows similar friction coefficient and fade & recovery behavior to conventional material and plate-shaped PMT exhibits higher wear resistance than splinter-shaped PT6.

  • In this study, the flexural characteristics of reinforced polymer concrete T-beams strengthened with GFRP, typically used for bridges and parking structures, are investigated. A method to determine the flexural failure mode of reinforced polymer concrete T-beams comprised of compression failure (CF), tension failure (TF), and fiber sheet failure (FF) for different levels of GFRP strengthening is proposed. Moreover, the present study provides a formula to calculate the design flexural strength for each failure mode. In reinforced polymer concrete T-beams strengthened with GFRP, an ideal failure mode can be achieved when the failure occurs in the following order: 1) yield of steel reinforcement, 2) failure of GFRP, and 3) compression failure of concrete. In the case of FF mode, due to GFRP failure before the polymer concrete crushing in compression region, a concept of equivalent rectangular block based on the ultimate limit state of concrete should not be used. Thus, this study suggests an idealized stress-strain curve for polymer concrete and finds parameters for stress block, ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ based on the strain distribution in polymer concrete. Furthermore, the present study suggests an aspect ratio of 2.5 by examining the compressive stress distribution and design flexural strength characteristics for different aspect ratio of T-beams. This study also provides a design flexural strength formula, and validates its acceptability based on experiment and theoretical analysis.

  • Structural battery has been researched extensively to combine the functions of the battery and structure without gravimetric or volumetric increments compared to their individual components. The main idea is to employ carbon fabric as the reinforcement and electrode, glass fabric as the separator, and solid-state electrolyte which can transfer load. However, state-of-the-art solid-state electrolytes do not have sufficient load carrying functionality and exhibiting appropriate ion conductivity simultaneously. Therefore, in this research, a system which has both battery and load carrying capabilities using glass fabric separator and liquid electrolyte was devised and tested to investigate the potential and feasibility of this structural battery system and observe electric properties. It was observed that elongating separator decreased electrical behavior stability. A possible cause of this phenomenon was the elongated glass fabric separator inadequately preventing the penetration of small particles of the cathode material into the anode. This problem was verified additionally by using a commercial separator. The characteristic of the glass fabric and the interface between the electrode and glass fabric needed to be further studied for the realization of such a load carrying structural battery system.

  • This study was performed to verify the structural reinforcing effect of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber. In order to verify the structural reinforcing capacity of RPET fiber, recycled PET fiber added RC slab specimens were prepared to examine the flexural capacity while those of plain concrete and those of added with PP fiber, and the behavior of the specimens were also evaluated. The result shows that the compressive strength reduces as the fiber volume fraction increases, and the rate of reduction varies from 2% to 7%. The result of the flexural capacity shows that the ultimate capacity of plain specimens is the highest compare to those fiber reinforced specimens, but it has shown that specimens reinforced by 5% PET fiber has the highest energy absorption and the ductility index. In the application of PET fiber in slab specimens has shown that ductility capacity have increased where the ultimate capacity decreasing. That is the different tendency of beam specimens, which the ultimate capacity and the ductility of those have both shown the improvement compare to plain concrete specimens, which means the reinforcing effect of PET fiber in slab is less strong than in beam. Therefore, the application of PET fiber in slab structures as reinforcement needs the proper mix proportion of concrete and volume fraction of PET fiber with deep consideration of the structures.

  • In this study, the load capacities and behaviors of a shotcrete member with steel supports, as composite member, are investigated numerically by using a fiber section element. The cross section of a shotcrete lining with steel support is divided into a bundle of fibers, which are allocated nonlinear stress-strain relations and used for determining internal forces. To verify the used approach of the finite element method for shotcrete with steel supports, the load-displacement relations of shotcrete lining obtained by numerical analysis are compared with existing experimental results and are analyzed with the stress distribution of the shotcrete and steel support obtained numerically. As a result, it is shown that the proposed approach can predict the load capacities of each material and the overall nonlinear behavior of shotcrete lining with steel supports. The change of location of the neutral axis and the flexural resistance ratio of each material are also derived from the stress distribution of the cross section of the shotcrete lining with steel supports. From the results, it is concluded that the flexural resistance performance of steel support should be considered in shotcrete lining design.
