  • One case of pointwise limit design is performed for a hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell(originally used by the Lin-Scordelis) to check the design strength against a consistent design loads, therefore, to verify the adequacy of current design practice for reinforced concrete shells. The design method which was based on stresses from membrane analysis in conjunction with pointwise limit state design equations shows a good performance, which means that the design method gives a lower bound on the ultimate load. This shows the adequacy of the current practice at least for this saddle shell case studied. To generalize the conclusion many more designs-analyses are performed with different shell configurations.

  • Recently, the demand of demolition for the unnecessary industrial structure is increasing due to deterioration tendency and the issue of demolition is becoming a major highlight. The restoration of the dismantled industrial site to its original natural state was currently underway. This execution case was intented to describe an application of the felling method one of the explosive demolition method to the demolition of the industrial stack. This stack was 150m high, a composite structure in which the outer wall of the stack was a reinforced concrete shell structure and internal stovepipe was a steel shell structure. As as result of the explosive demolition, the stack had collapsed precisely according to estimated direction. And the explosive demolition was completed without causing any damage to surrounding facilities.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear finite element procedure for the analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete shells using the four-node quadrilateral flat shell element with drilling rotational stiffness. A layered approach is used to discretize, through the thickness, the behavior of concrete, reinforcing bars and tendons. Using the smeared-crack method, cracked concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material. The steel reinforcement and tendon are assumed to be in a uni-axial stress state and to be smeared in a layer. The constitutive models, which cover the loading, unloading, and reloading paths, and the developed finite element procedure predicts with reasonable accuracy the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete shells subjected to different types of loading. The proposed numerical method fur nonlinear analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete shells is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • In this Paper, a so-called volume-control method for nonlinear failure analysis of reinforced concrete cylindrical structures is proposed. The pressure node which defines uniform change of pressure on finite element is added into layered shell element utilizing in-plane constitutive models of reinforced concrete and layered formulation. With the pressure node formulation, one can control the change in volume enclosed by the cylindrical structures and determine the required change in pressure. An algorith of volume-control method is employed and failure analyses for RC cylindrical structures are carried out using proposed method.

  • The development of computer-integrated design systems that fully support structural design process needs the computerization of structural design at the preliminary design stage. The objective of this paper is to develop a prototype system for preliminary design of reinforced concrete structures. This study focuses on the development of a natural design process oriented GUI(Graphic User Interface) and a representation of an experienced knowledge. The prototype system has been currently implemented using the objected-oriented programming concepts, the program language(i.e.,Visual C++) and the expert shell(i.e., Intelligent Rules Element).

  • Nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced concrete panels subjected to biaxial tensile loads are carried out by using a 9-node assumed strain shell element. The present study mainly focuses on the performance evaluation of material models such as cracking criteria, tension stiffening model and steel model in the membrane energy dominant situation. From numerical results, the exponential form of tension stiffening model together with the use of average yield stress model for the steel embedded in the concrete performs well in the panel analysis under biaxial tensile loading condition and it produces a good agreement with experiment results. Finally, the present results are provided as a benchmark test for reinforced concrete panel structures.

  • As a part of rapid construction technology of bridge pier caps, controversial issues for design and construction of precast pier caps were discussed. Three kinds of approaches of rapid bridge pier cap construction were proposed and discussed. Especially for an approach of precast shell type structures, experimental studies were performed to evaluate structural performance and compared with conventionally constructed reinforced concrete pier cap.

  • A 9-node degenerated shell finite element(FE), which has been developed for assessment of ultimate pressure capacity and nonlinear analysis for nuclear containment building is described in this paper. Reissner-Midnlin(RM) assumptions are adopted to develop the shell FE so that transverse shear deformation effects is considered. Material model for concrete prior to cracking is constructed based on the equivalent stress-equivalent strain relationship. Tension stiffening model, shear transfer mechanism and compressive strength reduction model are used to model the material behavior of concrete after cracking. Niwa and Aoyagi-Yamada failure criteria have been adapted to find initial cracking point in compression-tension and tension-tension region, respectively. Finally, the performance of the developed program is tested and demonstrated with several examples. From the numerical tests, the present results show a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.

  • A finite element program for material nonlinear fracture analysis of reinforced concrete shell was developed. This method can be used to trace the load-displacement response and crack propagation through the elastic and inelastic ranges. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. The validity of the present program was proved by comparing the numerical results with Hedgren's experimental data.

  • A new vector algorithm is presented for computing the stiffness matrices of layered reinforced concrete shell elements. Each element stiffness matrix is represented in terms of three vector arrays of lengths 78, 96 and 36, respectively. One element stiffness matrix is calculated at a time without interruption in the vector calculations for the uncracked or cracked elements. It is shown that the present algorithm is 1.1 to 7.3 times more efficient then a previous algorithm developed by us on a Cray Y-MP supercomputer.
