This paper is a part of a research program to develop a new design method for reinforced concrete bridge columns under seismic loading. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the relationship between ductility and confinement steel amount and to propose a design equation for reinforced concrete bridge columns. Computer program NARCC was used for parametric study, which was proved to provide good and conservative analytical result especially for deformation capacity and ductility factor compared with test result. A total of 7,200 reinforced concrete columns confined with spirals or perfect circular hoops were selected by combination of variables such as section diameter, aspect ratio, concrete compressive strength, yielding strength of longitudinal and confinement steel, longitudinal steel ratio, axial load ratio, and confinement steel ratio. Based on the parametric study a new design equation for confinement steel amount considering ductility demand was proposed, which can be used in the new seismic design method, i.e. ductility-based seismic design, for RC bridge columns.

In this paper, reinforced concrete columns test has been conducted under repeated lateral load reversals. The test columns have been reinforced with outside lateral confinement members in addition to transverse reinforcements. For this purpose, a strainless steel and a GFRP have been employed for the lateral confinement members. Primary parameters are types, thickness and spacing of the lateral confinement members. Experimental results reveal that columns reinforced with lateral confinement members exhibit improved ductility and energy dissipation capacity in comparison with those unreinforced. It is thus concluded that the present approach can be of a useful scheme for the seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete columns.

This study is aimed to investigate the strength variation of fire-damaged reinforced concrete column with polypropylene by non-destructive test. It is studied to infer the recovery degree of residual strength of fire-damaged concrete. For measuring the surface hardness of RC columns, Schmidt hammer test is used. Testing is performed four-times: before fire test, directly after fire test, after 30 days and after 4 months.
The study presents the results of an experimental program concerning the shear force transfer between reinforced concrete (RC) jackets and existing columns with damages. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the repair method applied and the contribution of each shear transfer mechanism of the interface. It includes 22 concrete columns (core) (of 24,37MPa concrete strength) with square section (150mm side, 500 mm height and scale 1:2). Ten columns had initial construction damages and twelve were subjected to initial axial load. Sixteen columns have full jacketing at all four faces with 80mm thickness (of 31,7MPa concrete strength) and contain longitudinal bars (of 500MPa nominal strength) and closed stirrups spaced at 25mm, 50mm or 100mm (of 220MPa nominal strength). Fourteen of them contain dowels at the interface between old and new concrete. All columns were subjected to repeated (pseudo-seismic) axial compression with increasing deformation cycles up to failure with or without jacketing. Two load patterns were selected to examine the difference of the behavior of columns. The effects of the initial damages, of the reinforcement of the interface (dowels) and of the confinement generated by the stirrups are investigated through axial- deformation (slip) diagrams and the energy absorbed diagrams. The results indicate that the initial damages affect the total behavior of the column and the capacity of the interface to shear mechanisms and to slip: a) the maximum bearing load of old column is decreased affecting at the same time the loading capacity of the jacketed element, b) suitable repair of initially damaged specimens increases the capacity of the jacketed column to transfer load through the interface.

This paper presents the behaviors of reinforced concrete columns under high temperature. When columns are exposed high temperature, temperature distribution of a section becomes nonlinear and it is calculated by using finite difference method(F.D.M). The interaction curves show the strength of columns at various exposure times. The strength of columns decreases according to the increase of the exposure time and the decrease of concrete cover.
T-shaped column is usually used as side column in buildings, which is one of the weak members in structural system. This paper presented a quasi-static cyclic loading experiment of six specimens of reinforced concrete (RC) T-shaped columns under compression-flexure-shear-torsion combined loadings to investigate the effect in the ratio of torsion to moment (T/M) and axial compression ratio (n) and height-thickness ratio of flange plate (φ) on their seismic performance. Based on the test results, the failure characteristics, hysteretic curves, ductility, energy dissipation, stiffness degradation and strength degradation were analyzed. The results show that the failure characteristics of RC T-shaped columns mainly depend on the ratio of torsion to moment, which can be divided into bending failure, bending-torsion failure and shear-torsion failure. With the increase of T/M ratio, the torsion ductility coefficient increased, and in a suitable range, the torsion and horizontal displacement ductility coefficient of RC T-shaped columns could be effectively improved with the increase of axial compression ratio and the decrease of height-thickness ratio of flange plate. Besides, the energy dissipation capacity of the specimens mainly depended on the bending and shear energy dissipation capacity. On the other hand, the increase of axial compression ratio and the ratio of torsion to moment could accelerate the torsional and bending stiffness degradation of RC T-shaped columns. Moreover, the degradation coefficient of torsion strength was between 0.80 and 0.98, and that of bending strength was between 0.75 and 1.00.

In the authors' previous study, an axial force-flexural moment (P-M) interaction curve model was proposed to evaluate fire-resisting performances of reinforced concrete (RC) column members. The proposed method appeared to properly consider the axial and flexural strength degradations including the secondary moment effects in RC columns due to fire damage. However, the detailed P-M interaction curve model proposed in the authors' previous study requires somewhat complex computational procedures and iterative calculations, which makes it difficult to be used for practical design in its current form. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a simplified P-M interaction curve model of RC columns exposed to fire considering the effects of fire damage on the material performances and magnitudes of secondary moments. The simplified P-M interaction model proposed in this study was verified using 66 column fire test results collected from literature, and the verification results showed that the proposed simplified method can provide an adequate analysis accuracy of the failure loads and fire-resisting times of the RC column specimens.

It has been observed in the past that, the reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns are very often subjected to torsional moment in addition to flexure and shear during seismic vibration. Ignoring torsion in the design can trigger unexpected shear failure of the columns (Farhey et al. 1993). Performance based seismic design is a popular design philosophy which calls for accurate prediction of the hysteresis behavior of structural elements to ensure safe and economical design under earthquake loading. However, very few investigations in the past focused on the development of analytical models to accurately predict the response of RC members under cyclic torsion. Previously developed hysteresis models are not readily applicable for torsional loading owing to significant pinching and stiffness degradation associated with torsion (Wang et al. 2014). The present study proposes an improved polygonal hysteresis model which can accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of RC circular and square columns under torsion. The primary curve is obtained from mechanics based softened truss model for torsion. The proposed model is validated with test data of two circular and two square columns. A good correlation is observed between the predicted and measured torque-twist behavior and dissipated energy.
In order to develop an effecive seismic strengthening metghod for existing concrete structure, structural tests of aramid FRP reinforced RC columns are performed. The test variables were strengthening methods of aramid sheet and strip. The test results were evaluated by comparing strength and energy dissipation capacities of non-reinforced and reinforced specimens. The test result comparison showed that aramid sheet reinforcement on RC column was evaluated as the most efficient way to increase strength and energy dissipation capacity.

The steel tube-reinforced concrete (ST-RC) composite column is a novel type of composite column, consisting of a steel tube embedded in reinforced concrete. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of cumulative damage on the seismic behavior of ST-RC columns through experimental testing. Six large-scale ST-RC column specimens were subjected to high axial forces and cyclic lateral loading. The specimens included two groups, where Group I had a higher amount of transverse reinforcement than Group II. The test results indicate that all specimens failed in a flexural mode, characterized by buckling and yielding of longitudinal rebars, failure of transverse rebars, compressive crushing of concrete, and steel tube buckling at the base of the columns. The number of loading cycles was found to have minimal effect on the strength capacity of the specimens. The number of loading cycles had limited effect on the deformation capacity for the Group I specimens, while an obvious effect on the deformation capacity for the Group II specimens was observed. The Group I specimen showed significantly larger deformation and energy dissipation capacities than the corresponding Group II specimen, for the case where the lateral cyclic loads were repeated ten cycles at each drift level. The ultimate displacement of the Group I specimen was 25% larger than that of the Group II counterpart, and the cumulative energy dissipated by the former was 2.8 times that of the latter. Based on the test results, recommendations are made for the amount of transverse reinforcement required in seismic design of ST-RC columns for ensuring adequate deformation capacity.
