  • This study aimed to examine the characteristics and types of reformation of local administrative districts in a metropolitan area, focused on the experiences of Japan, where municipal mergers were carried out extensively over the last ten years. Local administrative districts substantially have spatial characteristics. Therefore, the reformation of local administrative districts should be followed by a detailed analysis of the characteristics of the local area. Unlike other regions, the metropolitan area of Japan shows discriminative characteristics of finance, population and centrality. In addition, there are many types of regional context within a metropolitan area. These could be categorized by finance, population, centrality and basic industry. In conclusion, I revealed that municipal mergers could be categorized by their background and process and many issues were contained in each category. It had a meaning that municipal mergers had characteristics that expanded the regional inequality. Therefore, different approaches considering regional characteristics would be required for a municipal merger to be a useful way for regional development.

  • These days, regional innovation draws more attention than ever as a growth engine for regional economies, and governments put a variety of efforts to establish Regional Innovation systems(RISs). In this circumstance, this study aims to analyze types of RISs and the combinations of the factors influencing innovation performance as measured by patent application. Most of previous works have depended on case-oriented or variable-oriented strategy to classify types of RISs or to analyze the effects on performance of innovation factors, having some limitations: Variable-oriented approaches fail to capture complex combinatory effects of factors, while case-oriented approaches tend to depend on subjective interpretation. This study made use of the recently proposed fs/QCA(Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis) to overcome the limitations of those strategies. Based on the theory of RIS, three factors for regional innovation-input, infrastructure, and network-are used to classify 16 Korean Provinces. The results show that eight types of regional innovation types are identified, and that most of the regions are classified into either IN-type, equipped with high levels of Input and Network, or F-type, with high levels of infrastructure. In addition, applying seven sub-variables of the three factors to the fussy-set combination factor analysis, we examine a combination of factors influencing patent application. The results show that regions with high levels of R&D expense, valid patent, industry-academia cooperation, IP budget, and TLO values, and low IP capital almost always have a high level of patent application. Therefore, for regional innovation, the public sector needs to provide institutional support for R & D personnel training. It is also important to for both the public and the private sectors to make efforts to stimulate IP financing.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Regional disparities in dietary factors might be related to regional disparities in cardiometabolic health. Therefore, this study investigated the associations of cardiometabolic risk factors and dietary factors with regional types in Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Based on data from the 2007-2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the study included 39,781 adults aged ≥ 19 years who completed the dietary survey and a health examination. Healthy and unhealthy dietary factors (fat, sodium, fruit, and vegetable intakes) were evaluated using 1-day 24-h dietary recall method, as well as the use of nutrition labels with a questionnaire. RESULTS: Of the participants, 48.7%, 36.0%, and 15.2% lived in metropolitan, urban, and rural areas, respectively. Adults living in urban and rural had higher odds ratios (ORs) for obesity (OR for urban, 1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01-1.14; OR for rural, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.05-1.24) than adults living in metropolitan areas; these associations were significantly observed in middle-aged adults. Compared to metropolitan residents, rural residents had lower ORs for hypertension in middle-aged (OR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.76-0.96) and metabolic syndrome in older adults (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.67-0.91). Regarding urban residents, a lower OR for diabetes in middle-aged adults (OR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.74-0.97) and a higher OR for hypertension in older adults (OR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.02-1.39) were observed. Overall rural residents had higher ORs of excessive carbohydrate, low fruit, and high salted-vegetable intakes than metropolitan residents. Low fruit intake was positively associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension, after adjustment for regional type and other confounders in total participants. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that cardiometabolic risk and unhealthy dietary factors differ among regional types and age groups within Korea. Nutritional policy and interventions should consider regional types for prevention and management of cardiometabolic risk factors.

  • Recent studies have reported dysbiosis of the microbiome in breast tissue collected from patients with breast cancer and the association between the microbiota and disease progression. However, the role of the microbiota in breast tissue remains unclear, possibly due to the complexity of breast cancer and various factors, including racial and geographical differences, influencing microbiota in breast tissue. Here, to determine the potential role of microbiota in breast tumor tissue, we analyzed 141 tissue samples based on three different tissue types (tumor, adjacent normal, and lymph node tissues) from the same patients with breast cancer in Korea. The microbiota was not simply distinguishable based on tissue types. However, the microbiota could be divided into two cluster types, even within the same tissue type, and the clinicopathologic factors were differently correlated in the two cluster types. Risk of regional recurrence was also significantly different between the microbiota cluster types (p = 0.014). In predicted function analysis, the pentose and glucuronate interconversions were significantly different between the cluster types (q < 0.001), and Enterococcus was the main genus contributing to these differences (q < 0.01). Results showed that the microbiota of breast tissue could interact with the host and influence the risk of regional recurrence. Although further studies would be recommended to validate our results, this study could expand our understanding on the breast tissue microbiota, and the results might be applied to develop novel prediction methods and treatments for patients with breast cancer.

  • This study attempts to examine the regional distribution and the locational pattern of leisure facilities at Kangnam-gu in Seoul. For the convenience of the analysis the facilities are classified into public and private sector and then the facilities are classified into 11 types: mineral spring resort, play ground, neighborhood park, swimming pool, gymnasium, bowling, pingpong, aerobic, golf practice, health, and billiard facilities. For the purpose data was collected from statistical yearbook in 1993 and lists of registered facility at department of living physics of Kangnam-gu office. The data of the density of facilities and the opportunity of facilities per facilities type and per region are analysed with the technology of GIS. Results may be summarized as follows. First of all, correlation between the results of Location-Allocation model and the results of Interaction model is very high. Secondly, on comparing the density of facilities with the opportunity of the facility use per eleven facility types, three discrete spatial pattems are found. The mineral spring resort facility type with the highest unbalanced density and opportunity of facility use is to be found. Play ground, neighborhood park, swimming pool, gymnasium, bowling, pingpong, and aerobic facility types have the high unbalanced density and opportunity of facility use. The golf practice, health, and billiard facility types have spatially balanced density and opportunity of facility use. Thirdly, as comparing the density and the opportunity of the facility use per 'dong' administration unit, the spatial patterns of the public and the private facilities are different in density of the facility use and otherwise two are similar in the opportunity of the facility use. Fourthly, patterns of facilities users have different charateristics based on facility use time, expense, residence, and access time and four regional patterns are to be found ; user favorable, facility profitable, user balanced, and unfavorable.

  • This paper aims to examin the channel of waste collection, as well as to clarify the relationship between collection types and regional characteristics. According to the analysis results, a kind of used paper and old metal are mainly collected in regions which have a large population size, high population increasing rates, high population composition rates of secondary industry and high degree of self-supporting in public finance. On the other hand, in regions which have a small population size, low population increasing rates or a decrease in population, and high population composition rates of primary industry and rates of agricultural household, there are high collection rates for others recyclable wastes, a kind of scrap iron, used paper, and used bottle. These results show that the collection types of recyclable domestic wastes are different depend on industry developed degree in region.

  • This study analyzed the inflow and outflow patterns of emergency department patients, to identify changes in regional types in cities, counties, and districts in Jeonlado, Korea. Data of areas in Jeonlado for 2014 to 2018 were extracted from the National Emergency Department Information System. The extracted data includes the patients' and emergency medical institution addresses, which were used to calculate the relevance index (RI) and commitment index (CI). The calculated indices were classified into regional types by applying cluster analysis. A non-parametric method, Kruskal-Wallis test, was employed to examine the differences between years for RI and CI by regional types. The results of cluster analysis using the relevance and commitment indices revealed three regional types. Regions in cluster 1 were classified as outflow type, in cluster 2 as inflow type, and in cluster 3 as self-sufficient. RI and CI were calculated for each cluster or regional type. There were no significant differences between years in cluster 2 (inflow type) and cluster 3 (self-sufficient type). In cluster 1 (outflow type), there were no significant differences in CI between the years; however, there were significant differences in RI between 2014 and 2017, and 2014 and 2018. It is difficult to see that the emergency medical environment has improved due to the increased concentration of emergency medical care.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the 11 southeastern states in the United States by using regional characteristics variables and to classify the regions. First, 19 variables from four categories of population, society, industry-economy and urban service were selected and factor analysis were conducted, and the result showed five major factors of population, economic condition, job and commuting. Based on the following factor scores, a cluster analysis was conducted, and eight types of big city, medium-sized city, bed town, small town, urban hinterland, retirement town, and rural village were derived. These types of spatial distribution characteristics showed big cities were by different types of regions and they formed metropolitan areas. Each types of classified regions were located along the road network with hierarchy. The study focused on cases in the southeastern regions of the United States and can be used as a comparison with Korean cases. If the same research method is applied to Korea in the future, or if the time series of changes is tracked by analyzing different time points, it will greatly help identify the characteristics of urban and rural mixed areas.
