  • A constant-volume combustion chamber is developed to measure the burnt gas temperature over the wide ranges of equivalence ratio from 1.5 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 2.7 and pressure from 0.1 to 6 MPa by two-color method. The combustion temperature is also calculated by the conventional two-region model. The premixed fuel rich propane-oxygen-inert gas mixtures under high pressures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of combustion chamber with 45 degree intervals. The eight converging flames compress the end gases to high pressures. The transmissiv-ity in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by in situ laser extinction method. Comparisons are made with the combustion temperatures between two-color method and two-region model. It is found that the burnt gas temperature mea-sured by two-color method is higher than that calculated by two-region model because of being the negative temperature gradient on the calculation and the temperature distribution of light path-length on the measurement and the burnt gas temperature for the turbulent combustion is higher than that of the laminar combustion under the same conditions because the heat loss for turbulent combustion is lower due to the shorter combustion period.

  • Heat transfer characteristics in a narrow rectangular channel are experimentally investigated for upward and downward flows. The experimental data obtained are compared with existing data and predictions by many correlations. Based on the observations, there are differences from others: (1) there are no different heat transfer characteristics between upward and downward flows, (2) most of the existing correlations under-estimate heat transfer characteristics, and (3) existing correlations do not predict the high heat transfer in the entrance region for a wide range of Re. In addition, there are a few heat transfer correlations applicable to narrow rectangular channels. Therefore, a new set of correlations is proposed with and without consideration of the entrance region. Without consideration of the entrance region, heat transfer characteristics are expressed as a function of Re and Pr for turbulent flows, and as a function of Gz for laminar flows. The correlation proposed for turbulent and laminar flows has errors of ${\pm}18.25$ and ${\pm}13.62%$, respectively. With consideration of the entrance region, the heat transfer characteristics are expressed as a function of Re, Pr, and $z^*$ for both laminar and turbulent flows. The correlation for turbulent and laminar flows has errors of ${\pm}19.5$ and ${\pm}22.0%$, respectively.

  • This study was to investigate the impact of region-wide travel pattern on local fiscal capacity in the Seoul metropolitan area. The study adopted both factor analysis and regression modeling for it, while using fiscal-and travel-related variables as well as urban characteristics determining travel patterns. We used the former method to compress independent variables of travel and urban characteristics because of strong correlationship between them. Four factors identified by the analysis output were adopted in regression models with some dependent variables representing local fiscal capacity. Their results resulting from both analyses showed that local fiscal inequality within the metropolitan area is driven by region-wide travel Patterns such as total trips. inner trip ratio, and the ratio of trips from and to the Seoul city.

  • Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is defined by a 20-mm Hg difference of systolic blood pressure (dtSBP) and/or a 10-mm Hg difference of diastolic blood pressure (dtDBP) between supine and standing, and OH is associated with a failure of the cardiovascular reflex to maintain blood pressure on standing from a supine position. To understand the underlying genetic factors for OH traits (OH, dtSBP, and dtDBP), genome-wide association studies (GWASs) using 333,651 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were conducted separately for two population-based cohorts, Ansung (n = 3,173) and Ansan (n = 3,255). We identified 8 SNPs (5 SNPs for dtSBP and 3 SNPs for dtDBP) that were repeatedly associated in both the Ansung and Ansan cohorts and had p-values of < $1{\times}10^{-5}$ in the meta-analysis. Unfortunately, the SNPs of the OH case control GWAS did not pass our p-value criteria. Four of 8 SNPs were located in the intergenic region of chromosome 2, and the nearest gene (CTNNA2) was located at 1 Mb of distance. CTNNA2 is a linker between cadherin adhesion receptors and the actin cytoskeleton and is essential for stabilizing dendritic spines in rodent hippocampal neurons. Although there is no report about the function in blood pressure regulation, hippocampal neurons interact primarily with the autonomic nervous system and might be related to OH. The remaining SNPs, rs7098785 of dtSBP trait and rs6892553, rs16887217, and rs4959677 of dtDBP trait were located in the PIK3AP1 intron, ACTBL2-3' flanking, STAR intron, and intergenic region, respectively, but there was no clear functional link to blood pressure regulation.

  • Purpose: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus is a chronic inflammatory disease that mostly affects young people, which warrants surgical intervention. Although many surgical methods have been suggested, an optimal surgical method remains controversial because of high recurrence rates and postoperative complications. The objective of this study is to evaluate the results of wide excision and coverage with fasciocutaneous advancement flap for the treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus, and to assess the usefulness of this method Methods: From May 1995 to October 2006, the authors treated 19 patients with the use of coverage with fasciocutaneous flap after wide excision. The results were evaluated regarding recurrence rates, complications, and the change in sensitivity of the gluteal region after surgery. The follow-up period was 7 to 142 months (mean, 76 months). All patients were male. Results: Postoperative complications were wound infection at the suction drain insertion site and skin necrosis around the suture margin in one case, respectively. During the follow up period, only one recurrence (5.3%) was seen in fifth postoperative month, which was successfully treated by the same operative procedure. There was no other complications such as seroma, hematoma, wound dehiscence and flap loss. Extensive scarring and anatomic distortion did not occur in the reconstructed area. In addition, sensitivity of the gluteal region did not diminish. The aesthetic results were satisfactory for all patients as well. Conclusion: The authors advocate that fasciocutaneous flap closure be a good alternative method to cover defects after the excision of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus.

  • Thanks to KMTNet's wide field of view, it is time to implement imaging survey of extensive area of clusters of galaxies in the southern sky with modern instrument. As part of potential long-term survey of nearby (D < 50 Mpc) well-known clusters of galaxies, we propose a wide-field and deep survey of Fornax cluster as a first step of the project. By imaging the 400 square deg region (100 fields) enclosed within the five times virial radius of the Fornax cluster, in three SDSSfilters(g', r', i'), we can provide an unprecedented view of structure of Fornax cluster using sample from giant to dwarf galaxies. We will secure galaxies with brightness comparable to the limiting magnitude (r'=23.1 AB mag) of SDSS. Furthermore, we also request extremely deep (limiting surface brightness of ~ 28 mag $arcsec^{-2}$forr'band) survey for the central region (16 square degree, i.e., four fields) of Fornax cluster. This will allow us to detect the diffuse intracluster light (ICL) that permeates clusters as a valuable tool for studying the hierarchical nature of cluster assembly. In order to complete whole survey, about 285 hr observing time (without overhead) is required. By combining data available at other wavelengths, it will offer unique constraints on the formation of large-scale structure and also provide important clues for theories of galaxy formation and evolution. Our proposed survey will be implemented in the close collaboration with researchers in various countries (Germany, Australia, UK, USA) and ongoing project (e.g., SkyMapper).

  • In recent years, high-throughput genome-wide RNA interference screening is emerging as an essential tool to biologists in understanding complex cellular processes. The manual analysis of the large number of images produced in each study spends much time and the labor. Hence, automatic cellular image analysis becomes an urgent need, where segmentation is the first and one of the most important steps. However, those factors such as the region overlapping, a variety of shapes, and non-uniform local characteristics of cellular images become obstacles to efficient cell segmentation. To avoid the problem, a new watershed-based cell segmentation algorithm using a localized segmentation method and a feature vector is proposed in this paper. Localized approach in segmentation resolves the problems caused by a variety of shapes and non-uniform characteristics. In addition, the poor performance of segmentation in overlapped regions can be improved by taking advantage of a feature vector whose component features complement each other. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves the segmentation performance compared to the method in Cellprofiler.

  • Objective: Genome wide association study was conducted to identify and validate candidate genes associated with fatty acid composition of pork. Methods: A total of 480 purebreed Duroc pigs were genotyped using IlluminaPorcine60k bead chips while the association test was implemented following genome-wide rapid association using Mixed Model and Regression-Genomic Control (GRAMMAR-GC) approach. Results: A total of 25, 29, and 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were significantly associated with stearic (18:0), oleic (18:1) and saturated fatty acids (SFA), respectively. Genome wide significant variants were located on the same region of swine chromosome 14 (SSC14) that spanned from 120 to 124 Mb. Top SNP ALGA008191 was located at 5 kb near the stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) gene. This gene is directly involved in desaturation of stearic acid into oleic acid. General relationship of significant SNPs showed high linkage disequilibrium thus genome-wide signals was attributed to SCD gene. However, understanding the role of other genes like elongation of very long chain fatty acids-3 (ELOVL3) located on this chromosomal segment might help in further understanding of metabolism and biosynthesis of fatty acids. Conclusion: Overall, this study provides evidence that validates SCD gene as strong candidate gene associated with fatty acid composition in Duroc pigs. Moreover, this study confirms significant SNPs near ELOVL3 gene.
