Following previous work carried out in Building Research Institute in Japan, finite element analyses of conceptual column designs are performed in this paper. The effectiveness of the numerical model is evaluated by experimental tests and parametric studies are conducted to determine influential factors in conceptual column designs. First, three different column designs are analysed: bonded, un-bonded, and un-bonded with additional reinforcing bars. The load-displacement curves and cracking patterns in concrete are obtained and compared with experimental ones. The comparisons indicate that the finite element model is able to reflect the experimental results closely. Both numerical and experimental results show that, the introduction of un-bonded zones in a column end can reduce cracking strains, accordingly reduce the stiffness and strength as well; the addition of extra reinforcement in the un-bonded zones can offset the losses of the stiffness and strength. To decide the proper length of the un-bonded zones and the sufficient amount of the additional reinforcing bars, parametric studies are carried out on their influences. It has been found that the stiffness of un-bonded designs slightly decreases with increasing the length of the un-bonded zones and increases with the size of the additional reinforcing bars.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to select the proper sealing method and to see the performance of the saw and seal method for concrete rehabilitation based on accelerated pavement testings and lab tests. METHODS : Two accelerated pavement testings were conducted. One is to select proper sealing method of the asphalt joints and the other is to see the performance of the saw and seal method. Lab tests were conducted to select proper sealing method and a test section was constructed to see the field performance. RESULTS : The result of the first accelerated pavement testing indicated that the adhesive preformed sealants showed good performance when asphalt layer was rutted and in terms preventing from water infiltration. The second acceleration test indicated that the saw and seal method using the adhesive preformed sealant showed much better performance than the control. In the lab test bitumen, rubber and epoxy showed good performance as the adhesive. CONCLUSIONS : Saw and Seal method using the adhesive preformed sealant would markedly reduce the joint damage on the asphalt overlay.
This paper presents a numerical model for simulating the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls subject to cyclic loadings. The material behavior of cracked concrete is described by an orthotropic constitutive relation with tension-stiffening and compression softening effects defining equivalent uniaxial stress-strain relation in the axes of orthotropy. Especially in making analytical predictions for inelastic behaviors of RC walls under reversed cyclic loading, some influencing factors inducing the material nonlinearities have been considered. A simple hysteretic stress-strain relation of concrete, which crosses the tension-compression region, is defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain relation of steel is also introduced to reflect a pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and to represent an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element, respectively. To assess the applicability of the constitutive model for RC element, analytical results are compared with idealized shear panel and shear wall test results under monotonic and cyclic shear loadings.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to suggest a specific investigation guideline to decide priority of repairing old concrete pavements that pile up substantially. METHODS : In this study, a principle of division of homogeneous sections was proposed to reflect the characteristics of the pavement reasonably in the specific investigation results. In addition, a checklist and guideline of field investigation were suggested for the old concrete pavement sections, which require inspection toward their durability and structural performance. Furthermore, the items of laboratory test necessary to the old concrete pavement were suggested based on the existing laboratory test considering characteristics of the old concrete pavement. The present condition of the old concrete pavement could be analyzed by the test results. RESULTS : A method of division of homogeneous sections suitable for the specific investigation of the old concrete pavement was suggested. The proportions of distress severity of pavement sections were compared by distress type to figure out the present state of the old concrete pavement. Scaling, durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), and longitudinal spalling were selected as the most severe distress types. The detailed positions of the sections were also suggested. The checklist of the specific investigation was categorized by field survey and laboratory test, and its evaluation criteria were proposed. The three types of the sections of durability cracking (or alkali-silica reaction), bridge connection, and asphalt overlay were selected as the sections of the field survey. The compressive strength, void structure, and chloride penetration depth were suggested as the items of the laboratory test. CONCLUSIONS : A fundamental level of the guideline was suggested in this study to resolve the problem of old concrete pavement. Appropriate guidelines related to the repair of the old concrete pavement should be provided by performing additional research efforts.

The aim of this review is to communicate some essential knowledge of the underlying mechanism of the corrosion of structural containment alloys during molten salt reactor operation in the context of prospective online monitoring in future MSR installations. The formation of metal halide species and the progression of their concentration in the molten salt do reflect containment corrosion, tracing the depletion of alloying metals at the alloy salt interface will assure safe conditions during reactor operation. Even though the progress of alloying metal halides concentrations in the molten salt do strongly understate actual corrosion rates, their prospective 1st order kinetics followed by near-linearly increase is attributed to homogeneous matrix corrosion. The service life of the structural containment alloy is derived from homogeneous matrix corrosion and near-surface void formation but less so from intergranular cracking (IGC) and pitting corrosion. Online monitoring of corrosion species is of particular interest for molten chloride systems since besides the expected formation of chromium chloride species CrCl2 and CrCl3, other metal chloride species such as FeCl2, FeCl3, MoCl2, MnCl2 and NiCl2 will form, depending on the selected structural alloy. The metal chloride concentrations should follow, after an incubation period of about 10,000 hours, a linear projection with a positive slope and a steady increase of < 1 ppm per day. During the incubation period, metal concentration show 1st order kinetics and increasing linearly with time1/2. Ideally, a linear increase reflects homogeneous matrix corrosion, while a sharp increase in the metal chloride concentration could set a warning flag for potential material failure within the projected service life, e.g. as result of intergranular cracking or pitting corrosion. Continuous monitoring of metal chloride concentrations can therefore provide direct information about the mechanism of the ongoing corrosion scenario and offer valuable information for a timely warning of prospective material failure.

A cross section in RC flexural members must be designed to satisfy flexural strength and ductility requirements simultaneously. In design provisions, ductile behavior is ensured by a sufficient reinforcement ratio or depth of the neutral axis. If the reinforcement ratio is less than the balanced reinforcement ratio, ductile behavior is secured, and this value is theoretically the maximum reinforcement ratio. But for a cross section with less steel, brittle failure can occur regardless of ductile behavior because of unqualifying a cracking moment. Recently, designs with a minimum steel ratio have been increasing along with the use of high-strength material, so in design provisions, a minimum amount of reinforcement is suggested. In the KCI(2012) standard, a minimum amount of reinforcement was suggested in terms of strength of steel and concrete. But in the revised KCI(2017) standard, a minimum amount of reinforcement was suggested by a relationship between the design flexural strength and cracking moment indirectly. This code can reflect the effect of cover thickness, but a material model must be defined. Therefore, the minimum amount of reinforcement in KCI(2012) and KCI(2017) was examined, and a rational review method was studied by parametric analysis.

In this study, shear tests on steel fiber reinforced-prestressed concrete (SFR-PSC) members were conducted with test parameters of the concrete compressive strength, the volume fraction of steel fibers, and the level of effective prestress. The SFR-PSC members showed higher shear strengths and stiffness after diagonal cracking compared to the conventional prestressed concrete (PSC) members without steel fibers. In addition, their shear deformational behavior was measured using the image-based non-contact displacement measurement system, which was then compared to the results of nonlinear finite element analyses (NLFEA). In the NLFEA proposed in this study, a bi-axial tensile behavior model, which can reflect the tensile behavior of the steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in a simple manner, was introduced into the smeared crack truss model. The NLFEA model proposed in this study provided a good estimation of shear behavior of the SFRPSC members, such as the stiffness, strengths, and failure modes, reflecting the effect of the key influential factors.
The deterioration of existing bridges has become a major problem around the world. In the paper, a new model and an associated stress checking method are proposed for concrete box girders strengthened by external prestressing. The new model called the spatial grid model can analyze all the spatial behaviors clearly by transforming the box girder into discrete orthogonal grids which are equivalent to plate elements. Then the three-layer stresses are employed as the stress checking indices to evaluate the stress state of the plate elements. The initial stress check before strengthening reveals the cracked and potential cracking areas for existing bridges, making the strengthening design more targeted and scientific; the subsequent stress check after strengthening evaluates the strengthening effect and ensures safety. A deficient bridge is selected as the practical example, verifying the accuracy and applicability of the proposed model and stress checking method. The results show that principal stresses in the middle layer of plate elements reflect the main effects of external prestressing and thus are the key stress checking indices for strengthening. Moreover, principal stresses check should be conducted in all parts of the strengthened structure not only in the webs. As for the local effects of external prestressing especially in the areas near anchorage and deviator, normal stresses check in the outer and inner layers dominates and local strengthening measures should be taken if necessary.

Since concrete has a low tensile strength compared to the compressive strength, reinforced concrete flexural members represent easy crack occurance under a small load. In order to overcome this problem, steel fiber reinforced concrete has been developed to compensate the tensile strength and brittleness of members. However, in the design formula of the domestic building code, it is not specified in the design formula reflecting the material characteristics. Therefore, the field application of the steel fiber reinforced concrete have had many restrictions. In this study, a flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete is proposed by collecting and analyzing the material properties of material test results conducted by various researchers, and verified by the test results of cracking and stiffness evaluation of flexural members based on the proposed model. As a result of this study, the flexural tensile strength model of steel fiber reinforced concrete which can reflect the mixing ratio and aspect ratio of the steel fiber was proposed and the validity of the proposed material model equation was evaluated from the load-deflection relationship in the flexural test of the slab member.

The verification of serviceability of concrete structures requires more informations on the composite behaviors between concrete and reinforcement. Among them, the investigation of crack widths and spacings is based on the tension stiffening effects. In this paper, the tension stiffening effects of high strength concrete members with compressive strength of 80 and 100MPa are investigated experimentally. It was found that the current design code which is based on the tests of normal strength concrete may not describe the tension stiffening effects in high strength concrete correctly. The coefficient that can appropriately reflect the tension stiffening effects in the high strength concrete was proposed. Also, the crack spacing was investigated through the cracking behaviors and the crack width according to the difference of the strains in steel and concrete was estimated. The results of this paper may be used to examine the tension stiffening effects of high strength concrete members.
