  • Purpose: In this study, we investigated the relationship between the noise characteristics and the number of projected images in tomosynthesis using a digital phantom. Methods: The digital phantom consisted of a columnar phantom in the center of the image and a spherical phantom with a diameter of 80 pixels. A virtual scan was performed, and 128 projected images (Tomo_w/o) of the phantoms were obtained. The image noise according to the Poisson distribution was added to the projected images (Tomo_×1). Furthermore, another projected image with additional noise was prepared (Tomo_×1/2). For each dataset, we created datasets with 64 (half) and 32 (quarter) projections by removing the even-numbered images twice from the 128 (fully) projected images. Tomosynthesis images were reconstructed by filtered back projection (FBP). The modulation transfer function (MTF) was estimated using the sphere method, and the noise power spectrum (NPS) was estimated using the two-dimensional Fourier transform method. Results: The MTFs did not change between datasets, and the NPSs improved as the number of projected images increased. The noise characteristics of the Tomo_×1_half images were the same as those of the Tomo_×1/2_full. Conclusions: To achieve a reduction in the patient dose in tomosynthesis acquisition, we recommend reducing the number of projected images rather than reducing the dose per projection.

  • Binarization of document images is a critical pre-processing step required for character recognition. Even though various research efforts have been devoted, the quality of binarization results largely depends on the noise amount and condition of images. We propose a new binarization method that combines Maximally Stable External Region(MSER) with down-sampling. Particularly, we propose to apply different threshold values for character regions, which turns out to be effective in reducing noise. Through a set of experiments on test images, we confirmed that the proposed method was superior to existing methods in reducing noise, while the increase of execution time is limited.

  • Conventional methods for reducing vibration in engineering designs may be undesirable in conditions where size or weight must be minimized, or where complex vibration spectra exist. Some alloys with a combination of high damping capacity and good mechanical properties can provide attractive techanical and economical solutions to problems involving seismic, shock and vibration isolation. In this paper, it showed the noise and vibration characteristic was compared conventional rail joint to improved rail joint(damping alloy) for reducing noise and vibration. Its applicability to rail joint is discussed.

  • Cellular automata are discrete dynamical systems whose behaviour is completely specified in terms of a local relation. If cellular automata convergence to fixed points, then it can be used to image processing. From the generalized Potts automata point of view, we propose in this paper a cellular automata technique for reducing image noise. To minimize blurring effect, an algorithm based on neighborhood median computation is Preferred. Experimental results are reported.

  • In this paper, 3-dimensional charge simulation method was developed to analyze electric field distributions of special conductor bundles equipped with spiral rods for reducing aeolian noise. When we applied this method to 765 kV double circuit transmission line, we found calculation error of this method was within a reasonable boundary of 1%.

  • Since rolling (Radial AC Tilt) motion in Optical Pickup Actuator causes RF signal degradation, many researches have been done to find out how to reduce rolling degree. This paper aims to introduce two methods of reducing rolling degree with their theoretical concepts and experimental results. First method rearranges magnetic circuit and the other one adjusts the proportion of the distances among mass center, actuating center and supporting center.
