Steel and iron castings made with expandable polystylene (referred to hereafter as EPS) patterns are often affected by distinctive defects associated with incomplete decomposition of the EPS as the molds are filled with metal. The effects of practical factors on carbon pick-up were investigated on the specimens, by taking successive layers of swarf and analysis, whereas the lustrous carbon is determined by using combustion analysis. The quality of the castings, with particular reference to carbon pick-up in low carbon steel and lustrous carbon on gray iron, is further influenced to a significant extent by such practical factors as reduced pressure, the pouring temperature, the density of EPS pattern, the additive in coating and in pattern and the casting thickness. The rate at which carbon pick-up and lustrous carbon deposites are formed can be reduced by reducing the density of the pattern and also reducing pressure, especially by adding $Na_2CO_3$ in coating and in pattern to promote $CO_2$ evolution. The upper parts of castings obtained using EPS patterns are slightly higher in carbon pick-up and in lustrous carbon than other parts.
Ignition of hydrogen and oxygen in the "third limit" is theoretically investigated in the stagnation point flow with activation energy asymptotics. With the steady-state approximations of H, OH, O and HO$_2$, a two-step reduced kinetic mechanism is derived for the regime lower than the crossover temperature T$_{c}$ at which the rates of production and consumption of all radicals are equal. Appropriate scaling of Damkohler number successfully provides the explicit relationship between pressure, temperature and strain rate at ignition. It is shown that, compared with those for the counterflow, ignition temperatures for the stagnation point flow are considerably increased with increasing the system pressure. This is because ignition in the "third limit" is characterized by the production of reduction of $H_2O$$_2$, which is reduced by wall effect. Strain rate substantially affects ignition temperature because key reaction rates of $H_2O$$_2$ are comparably with its transport rate, while the mixture temperature and the hydrogen composition do not significantly affect ignition temperature.e.
In general, the booming noise intensity at tunnel exit is strongly related to the gradient of the compression wave front created by high speed train entering the tunnel. This paper presents some results in relation with the compression wave front produced when the high speed train enters a tunnel. Four kinds of tunnel entrance shape with real dimensions were studied to investigate the formation of compression wave front inside tunnel by train entering tunnel. Computations were carried out using three-dimensional compressible Euler equation with vanishing viscosity and conductivity of fluid. According to the results, the flow disturbances occured at tunnel entrance were eliminated by tunnel hood with same cross sectional area. The compression wave front is formed completely at 30-40m from tunnel entrance. The maximum pressure gradient of compression wave front is reduced by 29.8% for the inclined tunnel hood and reduced by 21.5% for the tunnel hood with holes at the top face with tunnel without hood. The length of the inclined hood is 15m and the length of the hood with holes is 20m.
The positioning accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) has been improved considerably during the past two decades. The main error sources such as ionospheric refraction, orbital uncertainty, antenna phase center variation, signal multipath, and tropospheric delay have been reduced substantially, if not eliminated. In this study, the GPS data collected by the GPS receivers that were established as continuously operating reference stations by International GNSS Service (IGS), Ministry of the Interior (MOl), Central Weather Bureau (CWB), and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Of Taiwan are utilized to investigate the impact of atmospheric water vapor on GPS positioning determination. The surface meteorological measurements that were concurrently acquired by instruments co-located with the GPS receivers include temperature, pressure and humidity data. To obtain the influence of the GPS height on the proposed impact study. A hydrodynamic ocean tide model (GOTOO.2 model) and solid earth tide were used to improve the GPS height. The surface meteorological data (pressure, temperature and humidity) were introduced to the data processing with 24 troposphere parameters. The results from the studies associated with different GPS height were compared for the cases with and without a priori knowledge of surface meteorological measurements. The finding based on the measurements in 2003 is that the surface meteorological measurements have an impact on the GPS height. The associated daily maximum of the differences is 1.07 cm for the KDNM station. The impact is reduced due to smoothing when the average of the GPS height for the whole year is considered.
We have treated polyester fabric with $CF_4,\;C_2F_6,\;SF_6\;and\;C_3F_6$ glow discharge plasmas to develop functional fabrics which preserve moisture transportation and water proofing nature. Modified properties were evaluated by water vapor permeation rate and breakthrough water pressure. The change of surface morphology was observed by SEM. Fiber interstice of the plasma treated fabric was calculated as $0.32{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and this value was sufficiently ideal as water repellent material. The moisture transportation of ${CF_4}-treated$ fabric was good as much as untreated fabric, and those of $C_2$F(sub)6-treated, SF(sub)6-treated fabrics were reduced by 1~3%, and that of ${C_3F_6}-treated$ fabric was reduced by 15%. The best treatment condition were 0.06 torr 120 seconds in $CF_4$, 0.05 torr 30 seconds in $SF_6$, 0.08~0.15 torr 90 seconds in $SF_6$ and 0.1 torr 45 seconds in $C_3F_6$ respectively. The grade of moisture transportation effect was $CF_4>C_2F_6>SF_6>>C_3F_6$, and water proofing effect was $C_2F_6{\approx}CF_4>C_3F_6>SF_6$. It was observed by SEM that the thin film was formed on the surface of the treated substrate by the fluorocarbon plasma treatment.
The purpose of this study was to compare and biomechanical evaluate the effects of three varying functional insoles on the kinematics of the lower extremities and foot pressure distribution during gait. For this 12 subjects participated in this study and each worn the 3 functional insoles during gait which kinematics, kinetics, electromyography and foot pressures were recorded. The function on the first insole was to absorb shock and increase the dynamic stability, the second was a gel type to absorb shock, and the third was to massage the center regions of the foot sole. the results were as follows; the first insole reduced the joints range of motion and reduced muscular fatigue, the second insole reduce the maximum, total and average foot pressures. Finally, the third insole produced larger values for the contact times and contact area.
The direct-drive servo valve(DDV) is a kind of one-stage valve because the main spool valve is directly driven by the dc motor. Since the DDV structure is simple, it is less expensive, more reliable, and offers a reduced internal leakage and a reduced sensitivity to fluid contamination. The control system of the DDV is highly nonlinear due to a current limiter, a voltage limiter, and the flow-force effect on the spool motion. The shape of the step response of the DDV-control system varies considerably according to the magnitudes of the step input and the load pressure. The system-design requirements mean that the overshoots should be less than 20%, and the errors at 0.02s should be less than 2%, regardless of the reference-step input sizes of 1V and 5V and the load-pressure magnitudes of 0MPa and 20.7MPa. To satisfy the system-design requirements, the PID-controller parameters of $K_c$, $T_i$ and $T_d$, and the derivative-feedback gain of $K_{der}$ are designed using the root locus and manual tuning.
Flow over a sphere is controlled experimentally at $Re=10^5$ using electro-magnetic actuators. The electro-magnetic actuator developed in this study is composed of the permanent magnet electro-magnet membrane and slot. Eight actuators are placed inside the sphere at equally spaced intervals on a latitudinal plane and the position of the control slot is 76 from the stagnation point. Each actuator generates a periodic blowing and suction through the slot at variable frequencies of $10{\sim}140Hz$ and variable amplitudes by controlling electric signals applied to the electro-magnet. Drag on the sphere measured using a load cell is significantly reduced with control at the forcing frequencies larger than the natural shedding frequency $({\approx}14Hz\;at\;Re=10^5)$, whereas drag is slightly increased at the forcing frequency of 10Hz. It is shown from pressure measurement that the static pressure in the rear surface of the sphere is significantly increased with control, indicating that the separation is delayed due to control. Flow visualizations also show that the detaching shear layer is more attracted to the sphere center with control, the separation bubble size is significantly reduced, and motion inside the bubble is very weak, as compared to the case of uncontrolled flow.

We present an in-situ study of the interaction of a bimetallic Rh50Pd50 bulk crystal with O2, CO, and NO using ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and compare it to results for 10 nm nanoparticles with the same overall composition. The surface of the bulk crystal has less Rh present under both oxidizing and reducing conditions than the nanoparticles under identical conditions. Segregation and oxidation/reduction proceeds quicker and at lower temperature for nanoparticles than for the bulk crystal. The near surface of the Rh50Pd50 bulk crystal after high temperature vacuum annealing is ca. 9% Rh measured by XPS. Heating in 0.1 Torr O2 to $350^{\circ}C$ increases the Rh surface composition to ca. 40%. The surface can then be reduced by heating in H2 at $150^{\circ}C$, leading to a reduced surface of 30% Rh. Titration of CO from this Rh-rich surface proceeds at a much lower pressure than on the Rh-deficient starting surface.
HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) combustion is an advanced combustion process explained as a homogeneously premixed charge of a fuel where air is admitted into the cylinder and compression ignited. It has possibility to reduce NOx by spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points that allows very lean combustion resulting in low combustion temperatures. Particulate matters (PM) could be also reduced by the homogeneous combustion and no fuel-rich zones. Injection timing is extremely advanced to achieve homogeneous charge where a diesel fuel could not be vaporized sufficiently due to low pressure and low temperature condition. Also the over-penetration could be a severe problem. The small injection angle and multi-hole injectors were applied to solve these problems. Dimethyl ether (DME) as an altenative fuel was also applied to relive the bad vaporization problem associated with early injection of diesel fuel. Neat DME has a very high cetane rating and high vapor pressure. Contained oxygen reduces soot during the combustion. Experimental result shows DME can be easily operated in an HCCI engine. PM shows almost zero value and NOx is reduced more than 90% compared to direct-injection diesel engine operating mode but problem of early ignition needs more investigation.
