The toxic, Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) caused by the Cochlodinium polykrikoides have a serious impact on the coastal waters of Korea. In this study, the acoustic detection system was developed for rapid HABs detection, based on the acoustic backscattering properties of the C. polykrikoides. The developed system was mainly composed of a pulser-receiver board, a signal processor board, a control board, a network board, a power board, ultrasonic sensors (3.5 and 5.0 MHz), an environmental sensor, GPS, and a land-based control unit. To evaluate the performance of the system, a trail was done at a laboratory, and two in situ trials were conducted: (1) when there was no red tide, and (2) when there was red tide. In the laboratory evaluation, the system performed well in accordance with the number of C. polykrikoides in the received level. Second, under the condition when there was no red tide in the field, there was a good correlation between the acoustic data and sampling data. Finally, under the condition when there was red tide in the field, the system successfully worked at various densities in accordance with the number of C. polykrikoides, and the results corresponded with the sampling data and monitoring result of NFRDI (National Fisheries Research & Development Institute). From the laboratory and field evaluations, the developed acoustic detection system for early detecting HABs has demonstrated that it could be a significant system to monitor the occurrence of HABs in coastal regions.

Monospecific red tide by a toxic dinoflagellate belonging to the genus Alexandrium occurred at Chindong Bay in the southern coast of Korea and continued from April 6th to 15th in 1997. The ratio of its cell number to total phytoplankton cell number was much higher than $95\%$. This organism was identified as Alexandrium tamarense, although slight morphological differences were found comparing to the original and successive descriptions of the species. We found neither anterior nor posterior attachment pores in these cells of the bloom population. The occurrence of red tide caused by A. tamarense was first reported in Korea. Its plate formula is Po, Pc, 4', 6"c, 8s, 5"' and 2"". Thecal plates are thin with pore-like ornamentation. In those plates, the anterior part of the first apical plate (1') is narrower and its posterior end has sometimes a block-like accessory, but this variation was considered within the range of the morphological variability of this taxon. The cell density during the red tide exhibited a wide range of variation by the depth of water column, ranging from $2\times10^6$ cells$l^{-1}$ to $5\times10^6$ cells·$l^{-1}$. Water temperature varied from 11.8 to $12.3^{\circ}C$. Toxicity of A. tamarense during red tide was measured as $8.8\times10^5$. $MU\;\cdot\;cell^{-1}$ by mouse bioassay.
The red tide that occurred in Jinhae Bay in the middle of July, 1977 was caused by the microscopic dinoflagellate, Gonyaulax sp. , which is very similar to G. catenella. The cell is round, dorsoventrally flat and transdiameter is about $40\;\mu$. Many cells are chained. Dark brown, band and streak-like patches were formed in the surface water. A great deal of jelly fishes, Chrysaora quinquecirrha and Aurelia aurita, appeared in the red tide area and its surrounding waters. The number of cells was high, being $5.0\times10^5\;cells/\iota$ and among them Gonyaulax sp., predominant species, was $84.8\%$ in maximum. Transparency was less than 1 m in patches. In the surface water, temperature was $25.0^{\circ}C$, chlorinity $17.8%_{\circ}$ and dissolved oxygen $8.11m\iota/\iota\;(180\%)$ during daytime. Red tide stayed for a week. Some oysters were found damaged after the extinction of the red tide but their interrelationship was not found.

This study was performed in order to identify the red tide-causing organism and to understand the characteristics of the water quality during the winter of 2015 and 2016 in the Oncheon stream, a tidal river in Busan, where red tide often occurs in the wintertime. Two sites were selected on the stream and the surface water was sampled a total of 28 times during the experimental period. Twelve water quality characteristics, including water temperature, pH, DO, COD, total-N (T-N), total-P (T-P), and salinity were analyzed in order to test water quality. The cell numbers of cryptomonads were counted directly by microscopic observation. The nucleotide sequences of the partial 28S rRNA gene and psbA gene from metagenomic DNA, derived from each sampling site, were analyzed. According to the results, the alga most responsible for the bloom was identified as Teleaulax OC1 sp., which belongs to the cryptomonads. Three items of chl-a, pH, and DO were positively correlated with the cell numbers of the cryptomonads counted at the upper stream of the tidal area (St 1) while eight items of chl-a, TOC, BOD, total-N, COD, SS, pH, and DO were positively correlated with the cells located at the junction between the stream and Su-young river (St 2) in the order.
During the period of the Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide occurrence in the southern coast of Korea in 1997, we obseved the vertical migration of red tide organisms in situ, along with environmental factors such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll $\alpha$ and nutrients for practical application of loess suspension techniques ot diminish fisheries damage. To cope with serious outbreaks of red tide of C. polykrikoides, the finfish culturists resorted with loess suspension to disperse the bloom watermass by turning around it with fishing boats in full speed. Peak in afternoon the cell numbers were diminished in the surface layer after sunset red tide organisms settled down in the middle and bottom layer progressively again after sunrise. Chlorophyll $\alpha$ and dissolved oxygen showed the same trends of variation with the cell number. In the course of controlling the red tide with loess suspension we could not find any severs oxygen deficiency to kill the culture species.

This study proposed a method to detect Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide pixels in satellite images using a logistic regression model of machine learning technique under Imbalanced data. The spectral profiles extracted from red tide, clear water, and turbid water were used as training dataset. 70% of the entire data set was extracted and used for as model training, and the classification accuracy of the model was evaluated using the remaining 30%. At this time, the white noise was added to the spectral profile of the red tide, which has a relatively small number of data compared to the clear water and the turbid water, and over-sampling was performed to solve the unbalanced data problem. As a result of the accuracy evaluation, the proposed algorithm showed about 94% classification accuracy.

In the southeast sea of Korea, the cold water is concentrated in every summer, showing in abnormal oceanic conditions. Cold water occurred in the southeast sea is dominantly influenced by wind, which occurs when the south wind is continuously blowing for 3 to 7 days more. In this study, water temperature, wind speed and direction data of KMA, KHOA and KHNP, Chlorophyll-a of COMS/GOCI, GHRSST Level 4 SST of NASA, and red tide alert data of the National Institute of Fisheries Science were used to analyze the correlation between occurrence and change of the cold water and the red tide of Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The upwelling cold water mass showed a characteristic of moving northward along the current and occurrence a high concentration of chlorophyll along the water mass. Also, when the warm current were strong, the characteristic of red tide showed a northward moving.
The present study investigated the survival rate, respiration rate, plasma stress index, and histological changes according to exposure time of cultured red seabream (Pagrus major) and olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) exposed to Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide. Fish cultured in natural seawater were used as the control group. Cochlodinium polykrikoides density was set to 5,500±200 cells·ml-1 in the experimental groups. All red seabreams died within 1 hour of exposure to red tide, whereas all olive flounders died within 5 hours of exposure. Analysis of physiological response revealed that in red seabream, plasma glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) concentrations were increased; plasma glucose and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentration were decreased. Meanwhile, in olive flounders, plasma cortisol, GOT, and GPT concentrations were increased; plasma glucose concentrations were increased during the first hour of exposure, followed by decrease after 5 hours; and plasma SOD, CAT, and GPx concentrations decreased during the first hour of exposure. Histological analysis revealed structural damage to the gills of both red seabream and olive flounder. In conclusion, the exposure of red seabream and olive flounder to Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide at the density of 5,500 cells·ml-1 induces oxidative stress, which activates antioxidant defense mechanisms, ultimately leading to liver and gill damage.
Identified 7 species of the genus Prorocentrum which have been obtained from the southern coast area for 4 years from 1990 to 1994 can be summarized as followed. P.balticum is rare species, causing a red tide, and P.dentatum, P.micans, P.minimum, P.triestinum are cosmopolitan species often causing a red tide in the study area. P.gracile and P.lima are very rarely showed up, the former is recorded at first in domestic and later is benthic attached species which has diarrheic shellfish poison.
To know the effects of the red tide and toxic dinoflagellates on survival and growth of larvae of the mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, laboratory experiments were conducted by incubating larvae with either unialgal culture of 4 dinoflagellate species (Amphidinium carterae, Prorocentrum triestinum, Gymnodinium impudicum, or Akashiwo sanguinea) or a standard food (Isochrysis galbana) for 10 days. The survival of larvae was higher than 80% when the food was A. carterae, G. impudicum, or A. sanguinea. The lowest survival (20%) was found when the food was P. triestinum. When the food was P. triestinum, the survival of larvae rapidly decreased from 87% at day 4 down to ca. 50% at day 6, and 20% at day 10. This implies that the larval population of M. galloprovincialis can seriously be affected if they are exposed to the red tide water dominated by P. triestinum for more than 4 days. Shell length of larvae either increased or decreased according to the food species. When the food was A. carterae, G. impudicum, or A. sanguinea, shell length of larvae increased. But, it decreased when the food was P. triestinum. Though shell length increased in 3 treatments, the daily increments (0.63 $\mu$ m for A. carterae, 0.46 m for $\mu$ G. impudicum, and 1.10 m for $\mu$ A. sanguinea) were smaller than that of the standard food (3.79 m for $\mu$ I. galbana). Correlation analyses chowed that the change in shell length was not significant when the food was A. carterae or G. impudicum. Therefore, all of 4 dinoflagellates affected the growth of M. galloprovincialis larvae: growth was negative for P. triestinum, nil for A. carterae and G. impudicum, and positive but lower than standard food for A. sanguinea. These imply that the dinoflagellates are less valuable as foods for M. galloprovincialis larvae. So, decreased growth rate of larvae is expected during red tides, which will consequently cause delayed metamorphosis or failure to recruitment to the adult populations. In considering the harmful effects of red tides on the aquatic ecosystem, not only the effects on adult populations of fish and shellfish, but also the effects on larval populations should be included.
