  • This paper discusses the results and observations from a large-scale fire test conducted on a slim floor system, comprising asymmetric beams, rectangular hollow section beams and a composite floor slab. The structure was subjected to a fire where the fire load (combustible material) was higher that that found in typical office buildings and the ventilation area was artificially controlled during the test. Although the fire behaviour was not realistic it was designed to follow as closely as possible the time-temperature response used in standard fire tests, which are used to assess individual structural members and forms the bases of current fire design methods. The presented test results are limited, due to the malfunction of the instrumentation measuring the atmosphere and member temperatures. The lack of test data hinders the presentation of definitive conclusions. However, the available data, together with observations from the test, provides for the first time a useful insight into the behaviour of the slim floor system in its entirety. Analysis of the test results show that the behaviour of the beam-to-column connections had a significant impact on the overall structural response of the system, particularly when the end-plate of one of the connections fractured, during the fire.

  • The determination of sound pressure radiated from periodic plate structures is fundamental in the estimation of noise level in aircraft fuselages or ship hull structures. As a robust approach to this problem, here a very general and comprehensive analytical model is developed for predicting the sound radiated by a vibrating plate stiffened by periodically spaced orthogonal symmetrical beams subjected to a sinusoidally time varying point load. In this these, we experiment with the numerical analysis using the space harmonic series and the SYSNOISE for measuring the vibration mode and character of response caused by sound radiation with adding the harmonic point force in the thin isotropic plate supported by the rectangular lattice reinforcement. We used the reinforcements, beams of open type section like the style of 'ㄷ' letter; the space of the beams were chosen to be 0.2m, 0.3m, 0.4m. We studied the behavior of sound pressure levels, analysis of vibration mode between support points, connection between frequency function and sound pressure levels, and connection between position function and sound pressure levels.

  • Longitudinal fracture behavior of non-linear elastic beam configurations is studied in terms of the strain energy release rate. It is assumed that the beams exhibit continuous material inhomogeneity along the width as well as along the height of the crosssection. The Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain relation is used for describing the non-linear mechanical behavior of the inhomogeneous material. A solution to strain energy release rate is derived that holds for inhomogeneous beams of arbitrary cross-section under combination of axial force and bending moments. Besides, the solution may be applied at any law of continuous distribution of the modulus of elasticity in the beam cross-section. The longitudinal crack may be located arbitrary along the beam height. The solution is used to investigate a longitudinal crack in a beam configuration of rectangular cross-section under four-point bending. The crack is located symmetrically with respect to the beam mid-span. It is assumed that the modulus of elasticity varies continuously according a cosine law in the beam cross-section. The longitudinal fracture behavior of the inhomogeneous beam is studied also by applying the J-integral approach for verification of the non-linear solution to the strain energy release rate derived in the present paper. Effects of material inhomogeneity, crack location along the beam height and non-linear mechanical behavior of the material on the longitudinal fracture behavior are evaluated. Thus, the solution derived in the present paper can be used in engineering design of inhomogeneous non-linear elastic structural members to assess the influence of various material and geometrical parameters on longitudinal fracture.

  • In this work, the structural response of thin-walled, composite beams with built-in twist angles is analyzed using a mixed beam approach. The analytical model includes the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and torsion warping. Reissner's semi-complimentary energy functional is used to describe the beam theory and also to deal with the mixed-nature in the beam kinematics. The bending and torsion related warpings introduced by the non-zero pretwist angles are derived in closed-form through the proposed beam formulation. The theory is validated with available literature and detailed finite element analysis results for rectangular solid section beams with elastic couplings. Very good correlation has been obtained for the cases considered.

  • Web openings of large beams provide space for wiring, piping, and duct work to provide for proper drainage, pipes and duct must be slightly sloped with the attendant result that all web openings can not be centered on the centroidal axes of the beams. Test specimens are made for opening-depth to beam-depth ratio of 0.5 and for eccentricities of the opening center line of 10% from middepth of the beam because of the proximity of the opening edge to the flange. In this paper, available test results and theories relating to the strength of composite beams having eccentric rectangular openings are surveyed and experiments were carried out to examine the structural behaviors. In all the tests in this paper good agreement is demonstrated with maximum loads measured in tests, and observed failure modes Furthermore, compared with analytical values and experimental values of interaction diagram between moment and shear capacity were safed as it is scattered with outer part of the analytical values.

  • The cost of underground work is a dominant factor to determine the total construction fee. It is generally 2 ${\~}$ 2.5 times higher than that of above ground for building with the same height. 'A new precast prestressed framing plan for underground parking building' was suggested with the beam of the least depth - U-type beams. The depth of regular rectangular reinforced concrete beam which is currently used in the underground parking of apartments could be reduced up to 12 ${\~}$ 34cm/story due to the development of a U-beams from the optimum process. Two full scale prototype U-beams were tested in this study. It was found that the Wide U-beams in the test showed higher strength than calculated nominal and design, however need to provide temporary supports to meet the flexural moment of construction load at the simply supported state before the lopping concrete hardens.

  • In this paper, Power Flow Boundary Element Method(PFBEM) has been developed for one and two dimensional noise and vibration problems in the medium to high frequency ranges. Green functions used for PFBEM are the fundamental solutions of energy governing equations. Both direct and indirect methods of PFBEM have been formulated and numerically applied to predict the vibrational energy density and intensity distributions of simple beams, rectangular plates and L-type plates.

  • The major objects of this report are to supplement data of natural frequencies of thin elastic rectangular plates to the available data, and to give an experimental verification for natural frequencies obtained by Rayleigh-Ritz method, the generation set of which are eigenfunctions of Euler beams. For the first object the following five models, for which data only for the fundamental mode or data only for square plates are available, are adopted; (1) two opposed edges are clamped and the other two opposed edges simply supported (C-C, S-S), (2) one edge is simply supported and the other three edges clamped (C-C, C-S), (3) one edge is free and the other three edges clamped (C-C, C-F), (4) two adjacent edges are clamped and the other two adjacent edges free (C-F, C-F). For the (C-C, S-S) model the frequency equation obtained with the mode shapes assumed as of a single trigonometric series is solved. And for the other four models Rayleigh-Ritz method taking eigenfunctions of Euler beams as the generating set is applied. The numerical examples are obtained up to the fourth, the fifth or the sixth order depending on the range of the aspect ratio (0.1-10.0). The number of terms in the generating set for Rayleigh-Ritz method is fifteen for all models. For the experiment three models made of 3.2mm thickness mild steel plate for general structure use were prepared in following size; $300mm{\times}600mm,\;600mm{\times}600mm\;and\;900mm{\times}600mm$. Their boundary conditions are made to fit (C-C, C-F) condition. From the experiment mechanical impedance curves based on the frequency response method were obtained together with phase relation diagrams. The experimental data are resulted in good conformity to calculated values.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical results on the long-term behavior of the reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams under sustained loading. In this experimental program, three beams with different conditions of aggregates replacement (natural aggregate 100%, recycled coarse aggregate 100%, recycled fine aggregate 50%) were subjected to the sustained flexural loading that was a half of the nominal flexural capacity over a period of 1 year. The beam were designed with net span of 2,000 mm and rectangular cross-section of 170 mm width and 170 mm effective depth. The beams were instrumented and monitored to observe the change in the long-term behavior due to creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained loading. The predictions of long-term deflection by ACI code, Branson, Mayer, Neville, EMM and AEMM were compared with the experimental results. From the experimental results, the reinforced concrete beams with recycled aggregates showed the same performance as that of a beam with natural aggregate. The proposed method to predict the long-term deflections of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams gives a good estimation for experimental results.
