  • This study examines the relationships between visitors' environmental attitudes as measured by the new environmental paradigm (NEP) and their recreational motivations based on data collected from a national park in South Korea. The data analysis indicated that visitors' environmental attitudes and motivation were multi-dimensional structures. The NEP composed of three factors named 'Humans over Nature', 'Balance of Nature', and Limit to Growth'. Visitors' motivation also composed of four factors representing 'Achievement and Stimulation', 'Escape and Enjoying Nature', 'Social and Leadership', and 'Family'. However, there were significant correlations among the factors, suggesting they were independent each other. There were also significant differences in visitors' motivation due to their level of environmental attitudes.

  • The Korean version of Perceived Restorativeness Scale was administered to 150 SanEum Recreational Forest visitors to investigate it's psychometric properties. Factor analysis revealed that the scale consists primarily of four factors related to compatibility, preference, being away and coherence. The internal consistency of the scale was positive. Based on these tests, it appears that the scale is a sound measure of restorativeness or psychological health benefits from forest experience.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine factors affecting user´s satisfaction in development of natural recreation forest(NRF) in order to answer the research question: What is the magnitude of factors affecting user´s satisfaction in development of NRF. After reviewing the literature, mechanism of outdoor recreation, and development factors in NRF, we constructed the conceptual framework and have formulated the hypothesis of this research. we have obtained data through a questionnaire, which surveyed 625 visitors at 10 of the 72 natural recreation forests in Korea in 1999, We have analyzed the data using the mean difference test, Pearson´s correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression method. We found that 1) all the development factors except recreational resources affecting user´s satisfaction have turned out to be statistically significant at one percent level. The direction of relationship between independent variable and dependent variable is the same as that of dependent variable. 2) in bivariate analysis, the relationships between user´s satisfaction and all the development factors are fairly high and statistically significant. The higher the value of development factors, the higher the degree of user´s satisfaction. 3 in multivariate analysis, such variables as the suitability of activities level of services, atmosphere, and facility have been statistically significant at one percent level, and 4) Their relative contribution of the suitability of various recreational activities, level of atmosphere, and service on dependent variable have been turned out to have 8.167, 4.889, 3.333, and 1.611 times more importance than that of the suitabity of recreational resources, respectively. The research results suggest that a guideline for the creation of marketable NFR and development of use-programs and recreational atmosphere be recommended in the planning and development process of NRF, and excessive investment on facilities is not desirable. The approach and analysis method adopted by this research is highly useful for an evaluation criterion of NRF and development of devices for increasing user´s satisfaction in NRF. It is recommended that more empirical study on individual factors affecting user´s satisfaction be performed in the future.

  • This study will analyze the economic impact on villages adjacent to recreational areas in natural forests with the goal of creating a forest development plan. The area of study has been limited to the National Natural Recreation Forest and the twelve adjacent villages around the area. The collected data used a SPSS. 12.0 frequency and cross, t-test and ANOVA analysis was performed. To questions regarding increase in income and employment due to recreational areas in natural forests, there were some in all three areas that responded that it did not contribute to increases in income or employment. In all areas, there were respondents who think that these recreational areas do not help increase awareness of their nearby towns. Facilities, in order from most used to least used were tourist sites, lodgings and then food and meals. The level of satisfaction of customers in all areas was low with reasons being low quality of goods, not knowing the village(s) well, a lack of specialty items, and poor roads. In conclusion, this study presents a development plan based on the derived research results.

  • This study was conducted to suggest to establish more effective and differential management strategy of arboretum, through the analysis and comparison between arboretum and representative forest recreational sites. The data was collected through questionnaire at the six fields of forest recreational sites in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do, 447 people who visited these forest recreational sites took part in the questionnaire. As the result of this research, arboretum was positively evaluated by the six strengths from the participants; natural area, experiences and observation activity, conservation of natural environment, promotion of health, reasonable charge of use and a lot of things to see and do. But there is the need for arboretum to develop characteristic rest culture and raise efficiency because arboretum is in keen competition with recreation forests and national parks by several characteristics.

  • As the complexity of society increases, the demand for the forest-based recreational site is also increased. This, in turn. makes congestion an ubiquitous type of externality in forest-based recreational site. Efficient resource allocation requires this congestion effect to be accounted and considered in the decision making process. In this content, this study was conducted to suggest a process which can be used to measure the congestion and determine the optimal number of users. Willigness to pay(WTP) function obtained from Book Han San National Park users suggested that every 20.000 users increased decrease the satisfaction of users obtained from the site visit be 27.3%. For the purpose of demonstration this WTP function is applied tit determine the optimal number of users which is estimated as about 73,000 persons per day.

  • This study was analyzed the behavior of recreational use through interviewing visitors with the questionnaire (1986.11-1987.9) in Mt. Kyeryong National Park. The number of visitors have been forecasted by tune series data of the past number of visitors, population, GNP, and number of cars (1974-1986) in korea. The results of the study can be summarized as follows : 1) Visitor's subjective evaluation about recreational environment evaluated to be fair in Mt. Kyeryong National Park. 2) They preferred natural forest resources to historic remains, tourist facility, etc.. 3) Number of participation was mostly once or five times over. 4) Visitors were affirmative to re-visit to the Mt. Kyeryong National Park. 5) Most of visitors stay for one day. 6) The most suitable estimated user regression model was : Y=-5753.7350+0.1726 Pop. -0.6564 NO. of Car. According to this equation, the total number of visitors will he increased by 3% per year from 1,023 thousands people in 1987 to 1,698 thousands in 2000.

  • The aim of this study was to suggest fundamental data for managing forest trail efficiently from the aspect of users near metropolitan city of Daegu, and to reveal the differences in visiting motivation and satisfaction on forest trail between regional users and distant users, which based upon the convenience of accessibility. As a result of questionnaire survey on the users of forest trail, it was revealed that they mostly visited recreational and therapeutic purposes. Most users were also satisfied with forest trail experiences without any differences between groups. Regarding to trail facilities, however, regional users within 30 minutes distances from the trail were significantly dissatisfied with the facilities. It was suggested that improving facilities and programs for recreational and therapeutic purposes should be established for regional users in the policy of self governing body.

  • The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate indicators which offer the significant influence on recreationists' experiences. Delphi survey technique with a panel of professionals was employed to collect data for this study. The Delphi process was designed with three round questionnaires. The identified indicators in this study should be basic information for Benefit-Based Management (BBM) Model for forest recreation areas. A list of 38 indicators relating to physical/biological, managerial and social components of recreation experiences submitted from three round questionnaires. From the results, indicators included in physical/biological category suggested as more important ones than other categories of indicators.
