The powertrain is an important factor for the interior and exterior noise behavior of the vehicle Thus, the noise vibration and harshness(NVH) behavior of an engine is becoming a major target of the powertrain development. This paper describes the analyses with the aim to reduce the vibration and noise of an advanced inline 4-cylinder diesel engine block by use of CAE methods. The characteristics of an engine block as a main excitation source of car interior noise is studied. Particularly, The effect of balance shaft to reduce the 2nd order engine excitation force is calculated by forced vibration and radiated noise analysis. The engine exitation forces are obtained under real operating conditions. It is shown that the reduction of vibration and noise level by adapting blancing shaft is well predicted and rediated noise is directly related to the surface velocity of engine block.

This paper presents a new velocity estimation strategy of a non-salient permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive without high frequency signal injection or special PWM pattern. This approach is based on the d-axis current regulator output voltage of the drive system that has the information of rotor position error. The rotor velocity can be estimated through a rotor position tracking PI controller that controls the position error to zero. For zero and low speed operation, PI controller gains of rotor position tracking controller have a variable structure according to the estimated rotor velocity. In order to boost the bandwidth of PI controller around zero speed, a loop recovery technique is applied to the control system. The proposed method only requires the flux linkage of permanent magnet and is insensitive to the parameter estimation error and variation. The designers can easily determine the possible operating range with a desired bandwidth and perform the vector control even at low speeds. The experimental results show the satisfactory operation of the proposed sensorless algorithm under rated load conditions.

A bidirectional flyback converter is a suitable topology for use in a PV-to-bus differential power processing (DPP) module for PV applications due to its electrical isolation capability, bidirectional power transfer, high step-up ratio, and simple circuit structure. However, the bidirectional flyback converter design should consider the effect of the output-side power switch utilized for bidirectional operation compared with that of the conventional flyback converter. This study presents the structure and design methodology of the bidirectional flyback converter for a PV DPP module. Magnetizing inductance is designed by calculating the power loss of converter components within the rated load range under the discontinuous conduction mode, which is unaffected by the reverse recovery characteristics of the anti-parallel diode of the output-side power switch. The validity of the proposed design methodology is verified using a 25 W bidirectional flyback converter prototype. The operational principles and the performance of the DPP operation are verified using practical DPP modules consisting of bidirectional flyback converters implemented according to the proposed design methodology.
Although many thermal power plants use heat recovery systems, high exhaust gas temperatures are maintained due to corrosion at dew points and ash deposits caused by condensate formation. The dew point of exhaust gas is primarily determined by the concentration of SO3 and steam, and various experiments and calculation equations have been employed to estimate it. However, these methods are known to be less suitable for exhaust gases with low SO3 concentrations. Therefore, in this study, since the temperature of the exhaust gas is expected to decrease due to the low-load operation of the coal-fired power plant, sulfuric acid condensation and low-temperature corrosion are anticipated. We aimed to conduct a quantitative evaluation to propose ways to prevent damage by limiting operating conditions and improving facilities. The experimental results showed that the corrosion rate increased linearly with rising temperatures at a certain sulfuric acid concentration. Furthermore, variations in sulfuric acid concentrations generated during the current power plant operation process did not significantly affect the dew point, and the dew point of sulfuric acid under these conditions was observed to be between 120 - 130 ℃.
This study nondestructively examined the evolution of crack density in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) upon cyclic loading. Uniaxial compression was repeatedly applied to the cylindrical specimens at levels corresponding to 32% and 53% of the maximum load-bearing capacity, each at a steady strain rate. At each stage, both P-wave and S-wave velocities were measured in the absence of the applied load. In particular, the continuous monitoring of P-wave velocity from the first loading prior to the second loading allowed real-time observation of the strengthening effect during loading and the recovery effect afterwards. Increasing the number of cycles resulted in the reduction of both elastic wave velocities and Young's modulus, along with a slight rise in Poisson's ratio in both tested cases. The computed crack density showed a monotonically increasing trend with repeated loading, more significant at 53% than at 32% loading. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of the crack density along the height was achieved, validating the directional dependency of microcracking development. This study demonstrated the capability of the crack density to capture the evolution of microcracks in UHPC under cyclic loading condition, as an early-stage damage indicator.

Stress and fatigue of the distributor, an equipment of the high-pressure evaporator for the HRSG, were evaluated according to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 2. First, from the results of the piping system analysis model, reaction forces of the tubes connected to the distributor were derived and used as the nozzle load applied to the detailed analysis model of the distributor afterward. Next, the detailed model to analyze the distributor was constructed, the distributor being statically analyzed for the design condition with the steam pressure and the nozzle load. As a result, the maximum stress occurred at the bore of the horizontal nozzle, and the primary membrane stress at the shell and nozzle was found to be less than the allowable. Next, for the transient operating conditions given for the distributor, thermal analysis was performed and the structural analysis was carried out with the steam pressure, nozzle load, and thermal load. Under the transient conditions, the maximum stress occurred at the vertical downcomer nozzle, and of which fatigue life was evaluated. As a result, the cumulative usage factor was less than the allowable and hence the distributor was found to be safe from fatigue failure.

The performance characteristics of a subscale diffuser under non-reacting conditions for high-altitude simulation were numerically investigated with respect to different lengths of the secondary throat diffuser. The ratio of the length of the diffuser entrance to the nozzle exit diameter was set to 0, 50, and 100%. In addition, flow characteristics were studied for a range of length-to-diameter ratios of the secondary throat diffuser. An insufficient diffuser entrance length caused contraction of the plume immediately after the nozzle exit. When the length-to-diameter ratio was less than 8, a strong Mach disk was formed inside the diffuser, resulting in a sharp increase in pressure. In addition, flow characteristics in the diverging part of the diffuser were investigated for a range of diverging part lengths. A short diverging part may lead to abrupt pressure recovery, resulting in the possible application of mechanical load to the diffuser.
In this study, damaged composite laminates were repaired by a stepped patch repair method using halloysite nanotube(HNT) and milled carbon(MC) reinforced composite materials with different amount of the particles. And the mechanical and structural effects of the particles on the interface between the damaged and repair surfaces were analyzed. At this time, after exposing them to a harsh environment of high temperature and humidity for a long time, the recovery rate of the material properties relative to the material forming the damaged plate was compared. As a result, at $70^{\circ}C$ high temperature distilled water, the hygroscopicity of the HNT/GFRP composites was significantly different from that of the MC/GFRP composites. Especially, 0.5, 1 wt. % HNT was added, the moisture absorption rate was the lowest and this was the factor that contributed to the mechanical strength increase. On the other hand, MC showed a high hygroscopic resistance only with a small amount, and the strength was different according to the action direction of the load, and the addition amount was also different.
In the case of a conventional composite patch repair using a heat blanket, the adhesive is pressurized using only a vacuum bag. In this study, however, a pressurization system has been developed to apply additional air pressure on the vacuum bag. In order to verify the performance of the developed system, the composite laminates were repaired with scarf patches and then tested under tensile load to be compared with the strength of the defect-free laminate. Tensile tests were also conducted on specimens with the same configuration but bonded in an autoclave. As a result of the test, the tensile strengths of the specimens repaired using the heat blanket with vacuum only without external pressure, the specimens repaired with additional pressure by the developed system, and the specimens repaired with the same external pressure in an autoclave, showed the strength recovery ratios of 74.9, 81.0, and 78.2%, respectively. The results of the tensile test after moisture saturation and the dried fatigue test also showed that the strength recovery ratios of the specimens repaired under the external pressure of 1 atm using the developed system are slightly higher than that of specimens bonded in autoclave.
Model tests in calibration chamber with open -ended steel pipe pile have been performed in sand deposit to clarify effect of soil plug on bearing capacity, load transfer mechanisms in soil plug, and behavior of soil plug under dynamic and static conditions. Model piles were devised so that bearing capacity of open -ended pile could be measured separately into outside skin friction, inside skin friction due to soil plug -pile interaction and end bearing force on the section of steel pipe pile. It may be concluded, form the test results, that the plugging level of open -ended pile is more correctily defined by specific recovery ratio, y, rather than by plug length ratio, PLR, and the major part of inside skin friction is generated within the range of three times as long as the inner diameter of the pile from the pile tip. The ratio of inside skin friction to total bearing capacity is much larger than that of outside skin friction to total bearing capacity. Therefore, the bearing capacity of pile could not be well predicted, unless the inside skin friction is properly taken into account.
