  • Deciding whether a certain cancer patient is suffering from a bone marrow metastasis is quite essential to clinicians. To find a set of explanatory variables of the bone marrow metastasis, we employed the logistic regression analysis on 60 cancer patients with bone marrow metastasis (the case group) and 41 cancer patients without bone marrow metastasis (the control group). These data shown in Append were collected retrospectively from the record of Severance Hospital of Yonsei University College of Medicine from January, 1977 to December, 1985. We could establish a set of decision rules of the bone marrow metastasis specially designed for clinicians based on the explanatory variables of the best fitting logistic regression equation. We also compute the specifity and the sensistivity of our decision rules.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the parent related factors that influence internet game addiction among elementary school students. Method: Data was collected through self-administered questionnaires and descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Data survey was conducted with 739 conveniently selected students who were in grades 4, 5, and 6 of elementary schools in Seoul or Gyung-gi province. Results: The addiction groups were classified as general user group (84.3%), potential risk group (10.0%) and high risk group (5.7%). There were significant internet game addiction differences by gender, grade, expense of internet cafe, religion, school record, place where child played, economic status, and duration and frequency of game play. The addiction was negatively correlated to parents' attachment, supervision, attitude to child nurturing, and expectations regarding school study. The most significant variables were both parents' attitude to child nurturing, and mother's supervision. These three variables explained 20.7% of internet game addiction in elementary school students. Conclusion: These findings are expected to make a contribution to the creation of ideal interventions at school, home, and counselling centers to prevent internet game addiction.

  • Social network analysis(SNA) has been recently applied to business areas such as social network services (such as Facebook and Twitter). In addition, the mobile telecommunication field attempts to analyze CDR(call detail record) data and apply customer relationship management and customer churn management through the use of social network analysis. The paper analyzes links between ego and alter based on ego-network and discovers four kinds of customer roles and then provides insights as a tool for customer relationship management or customer management.

  • This paper has investigated disease structure and pattern against 9,955 (34.6%) elderly patients aged 60 or older at 'K' University Hospital from January 1 to December 31, 2007 through canonical correlation analysis. According to this investigation, the variable with the biggest correlation coefficient has been whether or not surgery has been performed. Since the aged are weaker than the young physically and mentally in general, a surgical operation has been considered. I hope that the result of this paper would be used as basic data for establishment of systematic geriatric health program and disease statistics.

  • Objectives: To undertake manpower-related improvements based on a comparison between specialists in the traditional Korean medicine hospitals(TKMH) and their counterparts in Western medicine Methods: A survey of the TKMH based on questionnaire sheets dispatched to them by mail(57 of 142 responded) in the June December, 2008 period, and on almanac statistics provided by the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs of Korean Government. Results: Overall, the workforce engaged in the traditional Korean medicine hospitals comprises traditional Korean medical doctors(28%), nurses(23%), administrative staffs(19%), assistant nurses(9%), medical record keepers(2%), nutritionists(2%), herbal pharmacists(1%), and others(16%). Each hospital has 16.5 traditional Korean medical doctors on average, which can be broken down into 6.2 specialists, 1.3 generalists, and 9.3 residents/interns. Only 10.7% of whole of traditional Korean medical doctors work in the hospitals, compared to 54.5% of Western medicine doctors. The ratio of traditional Korean medical doctors to the entirety of employees in the TKMH is 2.5 times higher than their Western medicine counterparts, while the ratio of medical technicians to the entire employees in the TKMH is 20 times lower than in the Western medicine counterparts. Conclusions: To provide more qualified medical service in the TKMH, they will be required to increase the proportion of non medical doctor employees, like Western medicine counterparts.

  • Recently there has been attempts to develop hospital information system including order communicating system, patient tracing system, tumor registry system, office automation system and picture archiving and communication system(PACS). The authors devloped a practical system that was operated via order communication system of Yeungnam University Hospital. The system provided us the speed, accuracy, reliability, retention, economy and wide applicability through practical test. So we believed that this system would be one of standard computerized programs in radiation oncology practice and providing widely usable data for clinical statistics, medical record, tumor registry system and clinical researches.

  • Cancer is one of the major causes of death; however, the survival rate can be increased if discovered at an early stage for timely treatment. According to the statistics of the World Health Organization of 2002, breast cancer was the most prevalent cancer for all cancers occurring in women worldwide, and it account for 16.8% of entire cancers inflicting Korean women today. In order to classify the type of breast cancer whether it is benign or malignant, this study was conducted with the use of the discriminant analysis and the decision tree of data mining with the breast cancer data disclosed on the web. The discriminant analysis is a statistical method to seek certain discriminant criteria and discriminant function to separate the population groups on the basis of observation values obtained from two or more population groups, and use the values obtained to allow the existing observation value to the population group thereto. The decision tree analyzes the record of data collected in the part to show it with the pattern existing in between them, namely, the combination of attribute for the characteristics of each class and make the classification model tree. Through this type of analysis, it may obtain the systematic information on the factors that cause the breast cancer in advance and prevent the risk of recurrence after the surgery.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing hope in female high school students. The participants were 207 female high school students who were selected from 2 schools located at Province J. The data was collected from September, 2 to 24 in 2009, by self report questionnaires. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression, with the SPSS /WIN 13.0 program. Hope in female high school students differed by economic state and school record. Hope in female high school students positively correlated to task difficulty preference, self-regulatory efficacy, self-confidence, teacher support and peer support. Self-regulatory efficacy, peer support and self-confidence accounted for 34.7% of hope in female high school students. This study showed that self-regulatory efficacy, peer support and self-confidence should be considered in developing a practical nursing intervention program to increase hope in female high school students.

Method: The participants for this study were 361 students from one middle school, located in Gangwon province. The data were collected by a questionnaire given to the students. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results: The highest score for behavior promoting health was refraining illegal substances abuse. There was a significant positive correlation between behavior promoting health and optimism. There was a significant reverse correlation between behavior promoting health and pessimism, and also between optimism and pessimism. The predictors of behavior promoting health in middle school students were optimism, school life, pessimism, school record, grade, and smoking. These factors explained 25.7% of the total variance and the most powerful predictor was optimism (15.5%). Conclusion: The findings from this study, indicate a need to develop a nursing intervention programs to promote health behavior in middle school students including the promotion of optimism.
