  • This study aimed to construct a career exploration reading program based on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and measure its effects on students' career consciousness development. The study involved 12 participants in the experimental group and 12 participants in the control group, who underwent pre-test and post-test evaluations. After conducting 12 sessions of the career exploration reading program with the experimental group, a career development assessment was administered. The experimental group showed statistically significant effects in all nine sub-domains of career development compared to the control group. Additionally, the experimental group reported increased satisfaction, positive perception, and a sense of accomplishment in career exploration activities, leading to a positive impact on the formation of future career concepts.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of cognitive developmental stages on library behaviors, reading tendency and perception on the library of the elementary students. For this study, a cognitive development tests and a questionnaire survey was conducted with students in their fourth and sixth grades in three elementary schools in Seoul and statistical analysis was carried out with the survey data. As a result, sixth grade students with the higher cognitive development had more requests for library information services than fourth grade students did. However, sixth grade students use library less and preferred to focus on the books for fun and personal interests, comparing with the fourth grade students. Their high level of cognitive development did not always have a positive effect on library behaviors and reading tendency. In addition, perception on the library of sixth grade students was lower than that of fourth grade students and it was influenced by library behaviors and reading tendency. It was also influenced positively by frequent use of library, active support by librarians and reading curriculum-related books. Based on the analysis, it is suggested that school library service should be provided based on the development stage of the upper grades of elementary students.

  • This study is aimed at analyzing cases of management focusing on a reading club using the blended learning at school library and the relevant programs of the free semester system. Therefore, the study has designed a research model for the blended-based management of school libraries, and cases of activities of reading clubs at school libraries for participants in programs linked with the free semester system have been analyzed. As a result of the analysis, first, the confidence level was satisfied in all areas of stability, consistency, predictability and verification on confidence level for related variables of the research model. Second, a meaningful relation has been verified in the correlation analysis between the blended activities and activities of the career search and the career design. Third, as a meaningful static effect has been shown in the contact-free activities in the areas of activities of the blended learning and activities of the career search and the career design, it was verified that programs linked with reading clubs of the free semester system have higher positive effects in the contact-free activities. Last but not least, programs related to local governments to support reading clubs at school libraries have been presented, and management of the blended learning at school libraries has been suggested.

  • A method to determine the iron and steels employing a Direct Reading Atomic Emission Spectrometer was investigated. Matrix effect was removed by two correction methods which utilize linear and curvilinear functions. Although two methods gave different sets of matrix correction coefficients, the analytical results by the two methods gave the same results. The analytical results obtained by the present work were well agreed with those obtained by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry.

  • This study investigated the effect on children's literacy of teacher-child discussion about the contents of storybooks. The subjects were 10 experimental and 10 control 5-year-old kindergarten children in Cheongju. The experimental design was the Split Plot design. The research instruments used for pre- and post-tests were the Vocabulary Decoding Competence Test(Lee, 1998), Writing Competence Test(Lee & Lee, 1990), Story Comprehension Competence Test(Lee, 1998; Morrow, 1990), and the Emergent Reading Ability Judgements for Favorite Storybooks(Sulzby, 1985). Data were analyzed by ANOVA with repeated measures. Results showed that the teacher-child discussions about the contents of storybooks were effective for improving children's competence in decoding vocabulary, writing, and story comprehension but not for improving emergent reading ability.

  • The present study investigated the effect of sentence translation as a production task on short-term and long-term retention of foreign vocabulary. 87 EFL university students at a beginning level, enrolled in reading class participated in the study. The study compared the performance of three groups on vocabulary recall: (1) Control group, (2) Translation group, and (3) Copy group. During the treatment sessions, translation group translated L1 sentences into English, while copy group simply copied given English sentences with each target word. Results of the immediate test were collected each week from week 2 to week 5 and analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Results revealed that regarding short-term vocabulary retention, participants in rote-copy condition outperformed those in translation group. Four weeks later a delayed test was administered to measure long-term vocabulary retention. In contrast, the results of two-way repeated measures ANOVA showed that long-term vocabulary retention of translation group was significantly greater than copy group. The findings suggest that although sentence translation is rather challenging to low-level learners, it may facilitate long-term retention of new vocabulary given the more elaborate and deeper processing the task entails.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical model from which to test the influence of family background and work experience on the level of rural high school students' (N=381) occupational aspirations. In the basic model, mother's occupation directly influenced occupational aspirations. Father's education influenced occupational aspirations directly and also indirectly through students' academic achievement. The number of working hours per week had a direct and negative influence on academic achievement. In a different path, working hours had an indirect positive influence on academic achievement through parents' different treatment which especially focused on the fact that parents gave students more freedom compared to the relationship they shared before the students began to work. Enjoying school, studying homework, and extra reading were influenced by students' number of working hours. Two variables, extra reading and job characteristics, predict the social acceptance work attitudes which are a direct predictor of occupational aspirations. Academic achievement had a greater total effect on the level of occupational aspirations than any other variables.

  • The purpose of this study was grouping students' perception types on the unexpected results in experiments, and looking into how the problem-solving experiment affected the change of these perception types. In order to answer this, interview data were analyzed in terms of perception types, and through analysis of questionnaires carried out at the beginning and the end of the semester, the change of perception types was researched. As a result, perception types of students divided into 'the difference between theory and practice,' 'inexperience of experiment skill,' and 'No reading between lines in manual.' After performing the problem-solving experiment for one semester, the perception of 'the difference between theory and practice' declined, and the desire for 'reading between lines' increased, so the problem-solving experiment influenced on the change of perception positively.

  • We investigated the proper display environment for japanese electronic character reading lessons through the experiment with a projection TV and a computer. For the purpose of finding out the effect of prior learning activities at the context of authentic Japanese text orthography, which includes dual notation, words spacing, etc., we also made an experiment on comprehending the web documents which are extracted from japanese web sites. From the experimental results, we acquired a conclusion that two approaches are needed to enhance the ability of comprehending Japanese web documents which is newly added to the 7th curriculum revision. For short-term approach, we need to utilize Japanese web documents as learning materials. For long-term approach, we have to reconsider whether the orthography of the current Japanese textbooks is suitable or not.
