  • The purpose of this research is to document the current state of 'One Book, One City' community reading campaign (Hereafter called 'One Book' reading campaign), launched in 2003 in Korea, and the characteristics of the selected books. For this research, the homepages, news and reports of a total of 1,170 public libraries and their local government, and several major institutions and organizations related to reading and culture were analyzed with the research method of content analysis and literature review. Also, online catalogs of the National Library of Korea and the National Library for Children and Young Adults were examined to identify the characteristics of 729 titles and 1,179 volumes of books selected in 57 'One Book' programs, as of 2021. The analysis of 57 'One Book' programs and those selected books shows the selection of more than one books in different age groups in more and more 'One Book' programs, lack of consistency in themes of those selected books, and preference for young adult books, new publications and bestselling novels. This trend has weakened individual 'One Book' programs' concentration on one book or one subject, but helped invite a diverse group of people with various interests. More in-depth analysis and explanation of the process of book selection and its appropriateness with the stated goals of 'One Book' programs are needed.

  • Relationships between parents' home literacy attitudes in low-income families and children's emergent literacy were studied with 107 children 4- and 5-years of age and their parents. Instruments were Kim and Kwon's (2006) questionnaire about parents' literacy attitudes, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised(Kim et al., 1995) and the Concepts About Print(CAP; Kim & Kim, 2004). Results showed that parents of younger children were positive about reading books; parents of older children were positive about reading instruction. More positive parental feelings about reading and higher frequencies of reading with the child were related to children's higher vocabulary scores. Children's CAP was positively related with amount of parents' reading instruction, home literacy resources, and number of child's books in the home.

The study surveyed 477 elementary school students and 483 parents from five special metropolitan cities regarding their reading behaviour. Reading behavior was investigated in terms of reading frequency, book selection information source, reading awareness, and preferred books, and it was confirmed that there was a difference between members of children's reading and culture movement organization and children of the general public. Members of children's reading and culture movement organization and their children showed superior reading habits in terms of both quantity and quality than non-members and their children, and the book selection information service was used. In terms of perception regarding reading, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children found more "joy" in reading than "help in learning" as compared to the general public and their children. In terms of reading preference, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children intensively preferred Korean creative fairy tales and picture books while the general public and their children preferred Korean creative fairy tales, picture books, and educational comics. In order to create a healthier reading culture and environment for the long term, the development of more active reading participation methods for the general public is required.

  • This study investigated the consumption status, focusing on the factors related to book loans and purchases of reading consumers. Library experience, reading purpose, book genre, book price, and new books are the decision-making factors regarding consumers' book loans and purchases. As a result of a survey of reading consumers focusing on these factors, the more experience they have in using the library, the more they consume books. As for the book genre, the higher the loan consumption, the higher the purchase consumption. Consumers for reading purposes for liberal arts, hobbies, and leisure activities showed higher loan and purchase consumption than consumers for reading purposes for information acquisition, learning, and research. In terms of book price (cost), loan consumption was higher than purchase consumption. In the case of new books, both loan and purchase consumption were high. In general, reading consumers considered book loan consumption first when it was a library-owned book, and cases that led to book purchase consumption in the book market were confirmed. Based on this, it was proposed that win-win cooperation between the library and the book industry could be achieved.

After-reading-programs make, supply and utilize analytical reading materials of subject books for 5 days of reading camp and that consist of composition of impressions of the book, presentation of that reading discussion and a picture of impressions of the book. The results show that most of all composition describing their impressions of the book contributes to activation of reading activities after reading very much among four types of after-readings. The next reading discussion is effective and presentation Is also good. But a picture of their impressions of the book does not vet promote activation of after reading activities.
