A Reading Technique of math expression in e-Book for Reading-disabled People (독서 장애인 용 전자책 내 수식 독음 기법)

  • Digital talking books have been developed to enhance reading experiences for reading-disabled people. In the existing digital talking books, however, it is difficult to read special contents such as math expressions, images, etc. In this paper, we define reading rules for Contents MathML. Based on this rules, we implemented a program for reading the mathematical contents of Contents MathML, using XSLT. We conducted a confirm test to prove the accuracy of the program, and an usability test to measure understanding of reading text of math expressions.

A Study on How Reading Comic Books Affects Creativity (만화 읽기가 창의력 향상에 미치는 연구)

  • This study is intended to reveal reading comic books helps improve creativity. Though the long-lasting negative recognition towards comic books has positively changed these days, we need a ground upon which the social recognition needs improvement in that children's comic books have been used as a learning tool. Its introduction points out that there has been shortage of empirical researches on comic book reading, and as one of the empirical research methods, presents a method of comparative analysis on comic book reading, school study, and creativity tests via survey. The theoretical background in the 2nd chapter, first, puts emphasis on the significance of the creativity theory among all the other theories related to creativity, which focuses on problem-solving capacity. Second, it theoretically reviews the meaning which 'fun' and 'interest' have in development of creativity in the context of developmental process of the modern educational theories. Third, it empathizes that traits of reading comic books start off with 'fun' and 'interest', that awareness of reality gets expanded via the process of characters making their way through a strange world with empathy and absorption, and that comic book reading has to do with creativity. Fourth, it presents a model questionnaire with which to study relationship between comic books and creativity in an empirical way. The analysis on the survey outcome in the 3rd chapter shows, first, that smart students read many comic books, not to mention that studying helps improve creativity, which indicates above all, comic book reading and improvement of creativity are not negatively related, but are mutually complementary. Second, that creativity enhanced by reading comic books is higher than that enhanced by studying, which may mean comic book reading is more effective than studying in developing creativity. It has drawn a conclusion based upon these results, that reading comic books bears positive efficacy on both studying and developing creativity. Standing on this conclusion, it proposes it necessary to develop methods by grades of educating how to read comic books and to provide a recommended list of comic books to read.

Effects of 'Easy-to-read' Books on Preschooler's Independent Reading (3-4세 유아를 위한 '쉬운 책'의 개발 및 '쉬운 책'이 유아의 책 읽기 시도에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was (1) to construct 'easy-to-read' books and (2) to investigate the effect of 'easy-to-read' books on young children's independent reading, the subjects were twenty six three and four-year-old children who attended a Saemaul murery school in Irk, chullapuk-do. The subjects were randomly assigned to and of two storybook reading conditions: in the first condition. subjects were encouraged to read traditional storybooks and in the second condition, subjects were encouraged to read 'easy-to-read' books. The paired t-test and the Student's t-test were employed to analyze the data. The results showed that subjects in both groups attempted to read more frequently in the post-test than in the pre-test. Subject in the 'easy-to-read' condition attempted to read more frequently on the post test than subjects in the traditional book condition.

Interactions between 2-and-4 year-old Children and their Mothers During a Joint Picture-Book Reading (만 2, 4세 유아와 어머니의 그림책 읽기 상호작용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research was to find out how the interactions between mothers and their children differed depending on the age of the child and the type of book. The subjects of this study were thirty 2-year-olds and thirty 4-year-olds and their mothers. The number of male and female children was the same. The maternal interactions were analyzed in term of attention gelling, explanation, request, asking questions, and feedbacks, and the children's verbal and nonverbal reactions were also analyzed. The results showed that the characteristics of the mother and child interactions were different according the age of the child and the type of picture books. The results were discussed from the perspective of maternal scaffolding and the quality of mother-child interactions. The implications of the study were suggested in terms of the importance of the picture books and maternal roles in reading pictures books to their child.

  • The main aim of this study is to discover ways of promoting elementary school children's reading. The study provides a feasibility analysis of utilizing children's books in reading lessons, which is proposed as one of the ways. The contents of the four reading textbooks for Year 1 and 2 in Korea were analyzed and it was examined what and how children learn in reading lessons. The contents and methods of reading lessons in the UK and the USA were also investigated. It is considered that utilizing children's books in reading lessons which is the proposed way for promoting children's reading corresponds well with the goal of the curriculum of Korean. There is a high feasibility of applying the way to elementary schools in Korea. This is because the way has more advantages than the present textbook based reading lessons and the way is well utilized in elementary schools in the UK.

Effect of the Activity after Reading Books on Science toward Creativity (과학 관련 도서 독후 활동이 초등학생의 창의성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact on creativity when the elementary fifth-grade students do the activity with impression writing or the activity with science writing after reading books on science. The subjects for this study were students in two fifth-grade classes in an elementary school that was located in Incheon. The two classes were respectively selected as an experimental group and a comparison group. The comparison group read books on science and did the activity with impression writing for 6 weeks. And, the experimental group also read books on science and did the activity with science writing for 6 weeks. According to the result of the effect on the creativity, the experimental group was better than the comparison group. This study showed that the activity with science writing was more effect than the activity with impression writing to boost the creativity. After a detailed analysis about the creativity, this study showed a boost for all area of subordinate creativity.

Correlation of Reading Quantities in Developmental Period and Reading Material Type (성장시기별, 자료별 독서량 간의 상관관계에 대한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to examine the correlation of reading quantities in different developmental phases and various media(magazines, books, comic books). I surveyed reading quantifies in developmental periods, by questionnaires. As a methodology of empirical study, data was collected from 187 students at the Chonbuk National University. Statistical techniques of a Pearson Correlation Test were employed according to my hypotheses. The results of this survey are as follows: 1) reading quantities of general book of specific period is correlated with general book reading quantities of specific period. 2) reading quantities of magazine of specific period is correlated with magazine reading quantities of other period 3) reading quantities of comic book of specific period is correlated with comic book reading quantities of other period 4) correlation among reading quantity of middle school period and high school period is high.

A Study of the Relationship Between Economic Backgrounds and Reading Interests of High School Students (${\cdot}$고등학생의 경제적배경과 독서흥미와의 관계에 관한 연구)

  • The study tries to clarify middle and high school students' reading interests in recreational, informative, inspirational, and aesthetic reading areas 1,260 students' reading cards from 7 schools are divided into economically high, middle, and low groups, each of which is subdivided into reading objectives. The writer finds no close relationship between the students' economic status and their reading preferences. However, the study indicates that recreational books are read in the order of higher, middle, and lower economic groups and informative and inspirational books in the reversed order. The writer also finds different preferences between individuals more evident than those between groups, and recommends individualized reading guidance for students.

Study on the Spatial Standard for Data Reading Rooms in Public Libraries (공공도서관 자료열람실 공간기준에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the ratios of area, according to the domains and functions, of a public library. To this end, 20 public libraries were selected as samples from the 2012 Public Library Construction Casebook and from cases of consulting on the construction and operation of public libraries. The domains of a public library were categorized into data reading, cultural education, operation, common use, and others. There was a large difference in the area ratios between public libraries that were built with the aid of consulting (Group B) and those without consulting (Group A). In functional terms, the data(bookshelf) space and reading space had similar ratios within a data reading room, while the ratio of the library information space was smaller. Within a general data reading room, the ratio of the library information space was 12%, while the ratios of the data space and seating space were 44%, respectively. Moreover, within a data reading room for children, the ratios of the library information space and children's space were adjusted to 14%, respectively, while the data space and seating space each accounted for 36%, with either 3- or 5-decker bookshelves installed. This study has identified how to calculate the area for each domain, capacity of books, and seating capacity by applying area ratios through functions in the data storage domain, along with numbers of books and seats per unit space. This study has also succeeded in calculating the required area and seats for each type of data storage room by applying the number of books that exist. However, this study has its limitation in that the regional characteristics(Metropolis, Small & medium size cities, Rural areas) were not considered because the number of samples was only 20 libraries.

A Study on the Effectiveness of the Book Delivery and Reading Program for Vulnerable Children: Focusing on the Case of Library A in Gyeonggi-do (취약계층 어린이를 위한 책 배달, 책 읽어주기 프로그램의 효과에 관한 연구 - 경기도 A시 도서관 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study analyzed the effectiveness of visiting reading programs for vulnerable children, focusing on the case of libraries in A-si, Gyeonggi-do. Library A utilized a visiting teacher to deliver books that matched the children's levels and interests through non-face-to-face interactions, or to engage in face-to-face reading sessions and deliver books together. In 2022, a total of 158 individuals from 103 families participated in the program, with 103 individuals from 67 families delivering books and 55 individuals from 36 families engaging in book reading activities. Pre- and post-project surveys were conducted to assess the reading effects, and interviews were conducted with the visiting teachers. The analysis revealed that the level and interest of the children during book delivery and reading sessions were identified, and the effects of reading books with high levels of interaction were significant. Infants who were able to easily acquire reading experiences according to their age exhibited better reading effects compared to elementary school students. The program aimed at the new participant group showed slightly greater effectiveness than the group of continuing participants. Furthermore, following the implementation of the program, improvements were observed in reading interest, reading attitude, reading environment, reading interaction, self-esteem, social skills, language ability, reading proficiency, self-directed learning ability, and library utilization rate.
