Evaluation of a theory-based community intervention to increase fruit and vegetable intakes of women with limited incomes

  • The study objectives were to increase both the stage of readiness to eat fruit and vegetables as well as the intakes of women who participated in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) for families with limited incomes. The intervention was to enhance the currently used curriculum, Eating Right Is Basic III (ERIB3), with stage-specific processes based on the Trans-Theoretical Model of readiness to change. Trained EFNEP community workers taught the enhanced curriculum to 90 mothers in the experimental county and to 53 mothers in the control county. Pre- and post-intervention measures included stages of readiness to eat fruit and vegetables and to intake as assessed by 24-hour dietary recalls and staging questions. Most women recruited into EFNEP were in Action and Preparation Stages (53.5%). Fruit and vegetable intakes showed a linear trend along with the Stage of Change for fruit and vegetable. After intervention, some combination of the ERIB3 and the fruit and vegetables-enhanced ERIB3 resulted in a reported 1/2 servings/day increase in fruits and vegetables in both the control and the experimental counties, although changes were not significant. EFNEP women also moved along the Stage of Change Continuum for fruits and vegetables in both counties. The percentage of people who ate 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetables was significant, however, only in the experimental group. We encourage health professionals to apply lessons learned from this intervention and to continue to pursue theoretically based interventions to change dietary behaviors.

Effects of a Song Psychotherapy Intervention on the Change Readiness of Alcoholics (알코올 중독의 변화단계를 반영한 노래심리치료가 알코올 중독자의 변화 준비도에 미치는 효과)

  • This study investigated whether a song psychotherapy based on the change stages of alcohol addiction impacted the change readiness of alcoholics. The song psychotherapy intervention consists of six activities (listening to a song, singing, songwriting, song sharing, lyrics analysis, and discussion and analysis of a song), which considers the change stages of alcohol addiction. A total of 64 inpatients diagnosed with alcoholism were randomly assigned to either the control (n = 33) or experimental group (n = 31). The experimental group took part in the intervention program for 45 minutes twice a week for 6 weeks (total of 12 sessions). The intervention effect was evaluated with SOCRATES-K. The results showed that the SOCRATES-K score significantly increased by 14.6% (p < .001) for the experimental group, whereas it remained almost unchanged (0.8% increase, p = .141) in the control group. For subcategory scales, the experimental group showed the highest increase in the ambivalence factor, followed by the recognition and taking-steps factors. Meanwhile, no significant changes in all three scales were found in the control group. Therefore, the song psychotherapy intervention based on the change stages of alcohol addiction was found to significantly increase the change readiness of alcoholics.

  • The construction of smart factories for government SMEs is not easy due to the lack of professional manpower. The use of retired professionals is a way to solve the problem to some extent and to solve the job problem of seniors by effectively utilizing social assets. This study examines the effectiveness of using Meister based on a survey of 195 companies participating in the Smart Meister Support Program. As a result, the better pre-participation readiness and the better management and coordination of change during the participation, the more significant influence was on Meister's ability development and corporate performance. In particular, it was confirmed that Meister's competence plays a role in both 'pre-participation readiness and business performance' and 'between change management during participation and business performance'. In order to improve the performance of the smart meister business in the future, it is necessary to proactively promote the purpose and purpose of the business targeting companies that wish to participate in the business. In addition, it was found that it is necessary to support the development of change management in order to minimize the resistance to innovation during the project. It will be possible to enhance social competitiveness by resolving senior jobs and strengthening the competitiveness of SMEs by discovering and utilizing Meister, who is an expert among retirees.

The Effects of Affordance System Use on Agility and Performance (서비스기업의 변화준비성을 통한 행동유도시스템 활용이 접점직원의 민첩성 및 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study defined the concepts of change-readiness, affordance system, agility, and performance, which are becoming increasingly important and necessary in service industry. Also, by verifying the relationship among these factors based on theoretical and empirical researches, it proposed strategic implications for service firms to reinforce their competitiveness. The results of the analysis in this study are as follows. First, the factors of technology, organization, and environment had significant effects on affordance system. Second, affordance system had significant effects on both agility and performance. Third, agility had a significant effect on performance. Fourth, job uncertainty moderated the relationship between affordance system and agility, but not between affordance system and performance. The results suggest that affordance system is a highly effective method of improving agility of the frontline employees. To maximize the utility of affordance system, sufficient change-readiness in technological, organizational, and environmental factors are required. Reasons and implications of these observed relationships are discussed.

Food safety knowledge and practice by the stages of change model in school children

  • In this study, 342 grade 4-6 elementary school students in Gyeonggi-do were recruited to determine their readiness to change food safety behavior and to compare their food safety knowledge and practices by the stages of change. The subjects were divided into three stages of change; the percentage of stage 1 (precontemplation) was 10.1%, the percentage of stage 2 (contemplation and preparation) was 62.4%, and that of stage 3 (action and maintenance) was 27.5%. Food safety knowledge scores in stage 3 (4.55) or stage 2 (4.50) children were significantly higher than those in stage 1 children (4.17) (P < 0.05). The two food safety behavior items "hand washing practice" and "avoidance of harmful food" were significantly different among the three groups (P < 0.05). Stages of change were significantly and positively correlated with food safety knowledge and practice. Age was significantly and negatively correlated with the total food safety behavior score (r = -0.142, P < 0.05). The most influential factor on the stage of change was a mother's instruction about food safety (P < 0.01).

Analysis of the Effect of the Havruta Method in Engineering Education (공학교육에서 하브루타 수업방식의 효과 분석)

  • This study aimed to explore the change of engineering students' competencies through the havruta class. In the havruta class, engineering students' competencies were compared with pre-test and post-test. The research tool was developed by selecting learning readiness, academic self-efficacy, and communication ability as the learner's competence in the havruta class. Finally, 105 data were analyzed with SPSS 21.0 for windows. First, there was a statistically significant difference in learning readiness. Second, there was no statistically significant difference in academic self-efficacy. Third, there was a statistically significant difference in communication ability. It was found that there was a positive change of competencies in learning readiness ability and communication ability in the havruta class. Although the findings are difficult to generalize to all majors, these results will be a useful basis for instructors who want to apply the havruta class.

  • This study aims to define concepts on Hospital Design Focused on System to respond to the development and change by comparing general design methods of the General hospital architecture in Korea and analyze elements suitable to concepts on Hospital Design Focused on System in the General hospital architecture through examining the transformation of General hospitals in Korea. Essential architectural elements composing the Hospital Design Focused on System are as follows. First of all, the elements which can react to development of hospital architecture are HOSPITAL STREET and site situation. Secondly, core, equipment shaft, column, MAIN STREET and air handling unit room are elements of great importance as the location of these elements determines the dimensions and scale of the space which hospital functions are assigned to. Third, the area in regard to the rate of change is formed by MAIN STREET, which is the primary element, and envelope. The depth between MAIN STREET and envelope is defined as space depth. The flexible area is determined depending on this space depth and thus how to set up this flexible area determines the degree of readiness in responding to the change.

Optimizing Anti-Smoking Campaigns: The Dynamic Interplay of Self-Construals, Cigarette Types, and Cessation Stages

  • This study investigates the effectiveness of tailored anti-smoking campaigns by examining the interplay between self-construals, cigarette types, and stages of change in smoking cessation efforts. Focusing on both combustible cigarette and electronic cigarette users, the research explores how messages framed around either independent or interdependent self-construals influence attitudes and intentions to quit smoking. The findings indicate that in the early stages of cessation, combustible cigarette users respond more positively to messages emphasizing independent self-construals, which highlight personal health risks. Conversely, in the later stages, e-cigarette users are more receptive to interdependent self-construal messages that stress the broader impacts of smoking. We emphasize the importance of aligning smoking cessation messages with the psychological profiles and cessation readiness of different smoker groups. We offer theoretical and empirical insights for enhancing the effectiveness of public health campaigns.

Analysis on the Stages of Change in Fat Reducing Behavior and Social Psychological Correlates in adult Female (성인 여성을 대상으로 한 지방섭취제한행동 변화단계에 따른 사회심리적 요인 분석)

  • Under the assumption that people go through stages in making dietary behavior change, this study was attempted to apply the stages of a change model for fat intake by examining the associations of social psychological variables with stages of change in dietary fat reduction. Derived from social psychological theories, 10 social psychological variables on motivational beliefs(6), social influence(3) and self-efficacy(1) related specifically to selecting every day diets low in fat were constructed. Fat and energy intakes were assessed by a short form semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The associations of stages of change with motivational beliefs, social influence, and self-efficacy variables and energy and fat intakes were assessed in 333 female adults from large cities in Korea. Dietary stage groups differed significantly on most of the social psychological variables in ways predicted by theory. Motivational factors that lead to a psychological state of readiness to take action were important in the early stages of the dietary change process. Social influences were more important in the stages as people decide to take action. Self efficacy and motivational beliefs, particularly, reduction of perceived barriers were important in maintaining fat reduction behavior. The results of our study indicate differences in stages of change in fat reduction behavior in terms of nutrient intakes and social psychological correlates and suggests that adding a time dimension to social psychological models increases our understanding of dietary change, which assist us in designing nutrition education interventions that are more appropriately targeted by stage of change. The Use of Health Behavior Theory for Effective Health Counselling (효과적 건강상담을 위한 제 보건행동이론의 활용방안에 대한 연구)

  • The use of health behavior theory in health counseling may improve its effectiveness. This article provides an overview of health behavior theory and guidelines on how to incorporate various theories into effective health counseling. Models that focus on behavior change at the individual level are described, including the health belief model, which focuses on individual health beliefs; social learning theory, which emphasizes interactions between individual, behavior and its environment; theory of reasoned action and theory of planned behavior, which examines factors influencing behavioral intention;. the stages of change model, which focuses on one's stage of readiness for change. Research review provides explanatory and predictive utility of four health behavior theories. Suggestions for effective health counselling are as follows: 1. Unified theoretical framework incorporating key concepts from different health behavior theories is needed. 2. Need assessment should be included in counselling process. 3. Behavior-change counselling should target changes in one or more key variables previously identified. 4. Focusing on promotional efforts into a high profile behavior(gateway behavior) can be an an adjunctive way of initiating other health promotion behaviors. 5. Counselling should be staged based, and different strategies and processes of changes should be applied at different stages.
