  • This paper presents a transfer capability enhancement of using VSC HVDC system which can control reactive power as well as active power. The transfer capability is constrained by stability like voltage stability. These constraints may relieved by reactive power control ability of the VSC HVDC system. Site selection algorithm is also proposed.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for real power loss minimization and for improvements in voltage profiles. This method is accomplished by optimal control of reactive power in the system. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem, suitable for solution by linear programming technique. After establishing the objective function for minimizing the system losses with the help of linearised sensitivity relationships of control variables, i. e., the transformer tap position, generator terminal voltages and switchable reactive power sources. The linear programming technique is used to determine the optimal adjustments to the above variables, simultaneously satisfying the constraints. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a sample system and the result is presented and discussed.

  • Model predictive direct power control (MPDPC) is a widely recognized high-performance control strategy for a three-phase grid-connected pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier. Unlike those of conventional grid-connected PWM rectifiers, the active and reactive powers of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-connected PWM rectifiers, which are used in electromagnetic transmitters, cannot be calculated as the product of voltage and current because the back electromotive force (EMF) of the generator cannot be measured directly. In this study, the predictive power model of the rectifier is obtained by analyzing the relationship among flux, back EMF, active/reactive power, converter voltage, and stator current of the generator. The concept of duty cycle control in the proposed MPDPC is introduced by allocating a fraction of the control period for a nonzero vector and rest time for a zero vector. When nonzero vectors and their duration in the predefined cost function are simultaneously evaluated, the global power ripple minimization is obtained. Simulation and experimental results prove that the proposed MPDPC strategy with duty cycle control for the PMSG-connected PWM rectifier can achieve better control performance than the conventional MPDPC-SVM with grid-connected PWM rectifier.

  • Penetration and installation of a new dynamic technology known as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) in a practical and dynamic network requires and force expert engineer to develop robust and flexible strategy for planning and control. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is one of the recent and effective FACTS devices designed for multi control operation to enhance the power system security. This paper presents a dynamic strategy based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for optimal parameters setting of UPFC to enhance the system loadability. Firstly, we perform a multi power flow analysis with load incrementation to construct a global database to determine the initial efficient bounds associated to active power and reactive power target vector. Secondly a PSO technique applied to search the new parameters setting of the UPFC within the initial new active power and reactive power target bounds. The proposed approach is implemented with Matlab program and verified with IEEE 30-Bus test network. The results show that the proposed approach can converge to the near optimum solution with accuracy, and confirm that flexible multi-control of this device coordinated with efficient location enhance the system security of power system by eliminating the overloaded lines and the bus voltage violation.

  • This paper propose a sensorless control system of IPMSM with a adaptive back-EMF estimator and improved instantaneous reactive power compensator. A saliency-based back-EMF is estimated by using the adaptive algorithm. The estimated back-EMF is inputted to the phase locked loop(PLL) and the improved instantaneous reactive power(IRP) compensator for estimating the position/speed of the rotor and compensating the error components between the estimated and the actual position, respectively. The stability of the proposed system is achieved through Popov's hyper stability criteria. The validity of proposed algorithm is verified by the simulations and experiments.

  • This paper presents the results of field tests on Voltage Management System (VMS) using hybrid voltage control, which utilizes coordinated controls of various reactive power resources such as generators, FACTS and switched shunt devices to regulate the pilot bus voltage in a voltage control area. It also includes the results of performance test on RTDS-based test bed in order to validate the VMS before installing it in Jeju power system. The main purpose of the system is adequately to regulate the reactive power reserve of key generators in a normal condition with coordination of discrete shunt devices such as condensers and reactors so that the reserves can avoid voltage collapse in emergency state in Jeju system. Field tests in the automatic mode of VMS operation are included in steady-states and transient states. Finally, by the successful operation of VMS in Jeju power system, the VMS is proved to effectively control system voltage profiles in steady-state condition, increase system MVAR reserves and improve system reliability for pre- and post-contingency.

  • The low load power factor causes various problems such as the increase of the power loss and the voltage instability. The demand of reactive power increases continuously with the growth of active power and the restructuring of electric power companies makes the integrated management of ractive power troublesome, from which the systematic control of load power factor is required. In this paper, the load power factor sensitivity of the generation cost is derived and its effects in supplying the reactive power and enhancing the load power factor are analyzed in a small-scale power system. The load power factor sensitivity of the generation cost is applied for determining the locations and capacities of reactive power compensation devices. It is shown that the generation cost can be reduced and the system power factor can be enhanced effectively using the load power factor sensitivity.

  • In this paper, an adaptive compensation technique for parameter variation is proposed which can perform quick torque response in vector control of an induction motors. To solve the problem of control performance degradation due to parameter variation in an induction motor, a rotor resistance estimation is performed by the model reference adaptive control(MRAC). The algorithm of rotor resistance estimation is composed of the error relationship which is generated between a motor real instantaneous reactive power and an estimated instantaneous reactive power. The advantage of such a real reactive power reference model is independence of the motor parameter variation. The estimation rotor resistance values are applied to the direct vector control system with a flux observer. Finally, the simulations and experiment are presented to validate the rotor resistance estimation algorithm of induction motor.

  • This paper describes a controller design for the stator reactive power generator in the transmission system. The controller of static reactive power generator was designed using a mathematical model and non-linear state feedback. The performance of controller was verified using computer simulation with EMTP code and experimental work with scaled-model. The dynamic interaction with a simple power system was also analyzed using both the simulation model and hardware scaled-model. Both simulation and experimental results prove that the controller using PI block and non-linear state feedback offers better performance than the controller using PI block only.
