Authors evaluated the feasibility of a permeable reactive biobarrier (PRB) treated with biofilm formed by Beijerinckia indica (B.indica). This study focused on evaluating two potentials of B.indica for the requirements of PRB: reducing the hydraulic conductivity and degrading the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The hydraulic conductivity was estimated by rigid wall column test and finally the values were converted to the values of intrinsic permeability. The nutrient solution was passed through the biobarrier column to activate the bacterium and then leachate was in turn carried into the column to evaluate the durability of the biobarrier. Phenanthrene was selected as a representative substance of PAHs. The ability of degrading phenanthrene by B.indica was evaluated by two-phase partitioning bioreactor after estimating the possibility with two pretests: observing the colony formation and the optical density on glucose-free medium containing phenanthrene. With the results, B.indica produced large amount of strongly adhesive exopolysaccharides (EPS) and reduced several orders of magnitude of the hydraulic conductivity after 2 weeks of cultivation. Furthermore, about 1000mg/1 of phenanthrene could be degraded by B.indica in the two-phase partitioning bioreactor. In conclusion, the application of the bacterium, B.indica, was found to have a potential role of a PRB to retain and remove contaminants in porous media.

This study has incorporated the mechanics-dynamics-emotions (MDE) and two behavioral learning paths to investigate the customers' co-creation behavior in Taiwan. The intuitive path begins with a gamification design that reflects the customers' proactive and innovative behavior; the cognitive path begins with persuasion knowledge remarks based on rational and reactive reasoning. These two paths conclude what forms user co-creation. The study collects data of 505 active social media users in Taiwan and employs structural equation modeling. The empirical findings demonstrate persuasive knowledge and gamification design are significantly associated with self-reference, and in turn, positively associated with co-creation. It indicates that cognitive behavior plays the main role in forming co-creation. Participants are more drawn to co-creation behaviors by the marketing contents that prompt reactive behaviors than proactive ones. Therefore, marketing managers can use appropriate stimuli to enhance co-creation behavior. Companies can design activities related to users, and more accessible for reactive, instead of proactive behavior, i.e., asking for their initiatives. It also suggests that companies' marketing campaigns should involve key opinion leaders matching the product image and the target audience's preferences. The novelty of this study is to introduce a novel augmented MDE framework to extend the "dynamics" into the incubation and implementation stage.

Two-dimensional modeling studies using TOUGHREACT were conducted to investigate the coupling between flow and transport developed as a consequence of differences in density, dissolution/ precipitation, and medium heterogeneity. The model includes equilibrium reactions for aqueous species, kinetic reactions between tile solid phases and aqueous constituents, and full coupling of porosity and permeability changes resulting from precipitation and dissolution reactions in porous media. Generally, the evolutions in the concentrations of the aqueous phase are intimately related to the reaction-front dynamics. Plugging of the medium contributed to significant transients in patterns of flow and mass transport.

To clerify the cytotoxicity of reactive oxygen species in cultured hippocampal neurons of neonatal mouse, toxic effect was measured by MTT assay after cultured cells were incubated for 3 hours in the media containing 1~40 μM concentrations of H₂O₂. In addition, the protective effect of vitamin E was determined in these cultrures. Cell viability was significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner after exposure of 10 μM H₂O₂ to cultured mouse hippocampal neurons for 5 hours. In the protective effect of vitamin E, vitamin E prevented the H₂O₂-induced cytotoxicity in these cultures. From these results, it suggests that H₂O₂ has toxic effect in cultured mouse hippocampal neurons and vitamin E has protective effect on the cytotoxicity induced by H₂O₂.
We fabricated and tested porous silicon-based electroosmotic pumps. Compared to other pumping media, porous silicon is beneficial for obtaining comparable flow rates with much lowered electric potential, while maintaining enough mechanical properties. We fabricated porous silicon with two sided-reactive etching processes. We found higher flow rate per electric potential (consistent with previous studies) and we also found asymmetric flow rates for different pumping directions. We plan to utilize this asymmetry for AC pumping applications.

Sorption and desorption studies were conducted to evaluate several media as a potential biobarrier for the remediation of groundwater contaminated with hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs). Pahokee and Bion peats, Devonian Ohio shale, vermicompost, and 50% HDTMA-montmorillonite were used as model sorbents. Sorption and desorption isotherms were determined using the radiolabeled phenanthrene (Phe). Sorption capacity of Phe on several sorbents was in the order Ohio shale > 50% HDTMA-montmorillonite > vermicompost > Pahokee peat. Mineralization kinetics was investigated for Phe-sorbed sorbents using Pseudomonas putida 17484. Among the tested sorbents, active biodegradation of Phe was observed in shale and vermicompost: degradation in shale exhibited little lag time while that in shale showed a significant lag time. Results of this study indicate that sorbents used in this work can be utilized as permeable reactive biobarrier media for the remediation of HOC-contaminated groundwater.

Hot embossing lithography(HEL) has the production advantage of comparatively few process step, simple operation, a relatively low cost for embossing tools(Si), and high replication accuracy for small features. In this paper, we considered the nano-molding characteristic according to molding parameters(temperature, pressure, times, etc) and induced a optimal molding condition using HEL. High precision nano-patter master with various shapes were designed and manufactured using the DRIE(Deep Reactive ion Etching), LPCVD(Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition) and thermal oxidation process, and we investigated the molding characteristic of DVD and Blu-ray nickel stamp. We induced flow behaviors of polymer, rheology by shapes and sizes of the pattern through various molding experiments. Finally, with achieving nano-structure molding with high aspect ratio, we will secure a basic technology about the molding of large-area nano-pattern media.

A hybrid permeable reactive barriers(hybrid PRBs) composed of Fe(II) PRB, biological PRB and sorptive PRB was investigated to treat groundwater with multiple contaminations. We performed batch, column and pilot tests to determine removal rates and design parameters of each PRB media, and operated two hybrid PRB systems with pilot-scale barriers in series. The pilot test of the hybrid PRB system with the combination of Fe(II), biological media and black shale showed multiple contaminations could be removed in ground water. Nitrate could be treated below 20 mg/L and Cr(VI) was treated down to 0.05 mg/L. TCE was degraded below 0.001 mg/L in system. The hybrid PRB system with a proper combination of PRBs could remediate ground water with multiple contaminations.
Kinetic studies of the deacylation reactions of p-and m-nitrophenyl esters of (R or S)-${\alpha}$ -methoxyphenylacetic acid were performed in ${\beta}$ -CD, mono-6-deoxy-6-[N-(2-aminoethyl)]amino-${\beta}$-CD (${\beta}$-CDen) and mono-6-deoxy-6-[N-(2-aminoethyl)-2-aminoethyl] amino-${\beta}$-CD (${\beta}$-CDdien) media. The binding constants (K) of the substrates to the hosts and the rate constants ($k_{\varphi}^{CD}$) for the complexed substrates were determined. $k_{\varphi}^{CD}$ values are highly dependent on the hosts and the substrates, whereas differences in K values among them are modest. The p-nitrophenyl esters show larger acceleration by -${\beta}$-CDen and -${\beta}$-CDdien than the corresponding m-isomers, while the m-isomers are more reactive than the p-isomers in -${\beta}$-CD media. This is taken as an indication that the amino groups attached to the primary side of -${\beta}$-CD participate in the deacylation reaction.

Reactive oxygen species are produced under diabetic conditions and possibly cause various forms of tissue damage in patients with diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of high glucose on the alloxan-induced beta cell injury. The insulinoma (RINm5F) cells were clutured either with high glucose (22.2 mM) or normoglucose (5.6 mM) in RPMI 1460 media for 3 days. The SOD activities were determined by spectrophotometric assay and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) stain. The effects of high glucose on the cytotoxicity of alloxan were also investigated in RINm5F cells and the cells viability were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) methods. Results showed that the CuZn-SOD activity was decreased but Mn-SOD activity was increased significantly in RINm5F cells cultured with high glucose (22.2 mM) media. The cytotoxicity of alloxan was increased by high glucose compared with normoglucose in RINm5F cells. Diethyl-dithiocarbarmate (DDC), as inhibitor of CuZn-SOC, also potentiate the alloxan-induced cytotoxocity in RINm5F cells. These results suggest that, in RINm5F cells, short term culture with high glucose media decreases Cu-Zn-SOD activity and the decreased activity of CuZn-SOD many one of the causative factors of beta-cell injury induced by high glucose.
