  • The effect of operating parameters (reaction temperature and time) and reaction modes (batch and semi-batch) on the behavior of amino acid production from hydrothermal decomposition of fish-derived wastes was investigated. The amino acids obtained in batch experiments at temperature of 250$^{\circ}C$ were mainly alanine (Ala) and glycine (Gly) at maximum yield of 65 and 28mg/g-dry fish, respectively. At relatively lower temperature of 200$^{\circ}C$, the yield of high-molecular-weight amino acids such as aspartic acid (Asp) and serine (Ser) is high, but decreases as temperature increases. It is likely that high-molecular-weight amino acids decompose faster than low-molecular ones. Semi-batch mode of reaction suppressed decomposition of amino acids into organic acids (or volatile materials) by continuously removing the products from the reaction zone as soon as they are formed. Thus, large amount of high-molecular-weight amino acids such as Asp and Ser at this reaction mode was observed.

  • Synthesis of the NiTi shape memory alloy using the thermal explosion mode of the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis has been investigated. The significant fractions of intermetallics phases were found to form at the Ti/Ni powder interface during the heating to the ignition temperature and seemed to influence the relative fraction of phases in the final products. As the heating rate to the ignition temperature was increased, the combustion temperature and the fraction of NiTi in the final reaction products were increased. The synthesis reaction under 70 MPa compressive pressure yielded a reaction product with 98% theoretical density.

  • In this study, the dependency of the behavior of propagating front on the reaction condition in frontal polymerization reaction has been studied. We have used some multifunctional acrylates as a monomer and ammonium persulfate as an initiator for the polymerization reactions. In frontal polymerization, a method of producing polymeric materials via a thermal front that propagates through the unreacted monomer/initiator solution, the behavior of self propagating front shows various dynamic patterns depending on the reaction condition. We have obtained some spin modes of propagating front in the number of 'hot spots' or 'spin heads' by changing the reaction condition. The effect of the reactor tube diameter on the mode of propagating front has also been studied by using some reactor tubes with different size of tube diameter and it has been examined in some detail by adopting an experimental method of two-tubes system.

  • Unsteady Shock-Induced Combustion has been studied for the past few decades since it is considered as one of the potential ways to reach supersonic flights. Experimental observations of Unsteady SIC were observed as early as 1960's. But Lehr was the first to report in detail the mechanisms of Shock-Induced Combustion experimentally. Numerical Studies on SIC were helpful in explaining the insight into the oscillatory behaviour in the mid 90's to early 2000's. Detailed reaction mechanisms is required to prediction the SIC flowfield more in detail. However at that time, very few reaction mechanisms on hydrogen-oxidation were reported. In the last decade, various number of hydrogen reaction mechanisms were reported. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyze the effect of various reaction mechanisms in an unsteady mode of Shock-Induced Combustion.

  • In the dynamic analysis of a mechanism, if one or more of the components are flexible, then the simulation will not be accurate because of the violation of the rigid body assumption. Mode shapes are used to represent the dynamic behavior of an elastic structure. A modal synthesis method which uses a combination of normal modes, constraint modes, and attachment modes, was used to represent effectively the elastic deformation of a flexible multibody. Since the combination of these modes should be different for each type of connecting part, the modal synthesis method was studied for the various types of interconnecting joints. In addition, the analysis procedure for the flexible body was explained. A satellite system with flexible solar panels was chosen as an example to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of the friction and wear according to the amount of ion-irradiation for the carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP). Unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced composites were fabricated with epoxy resin as a matrix and carbon fiber as a reinforcement, and its surface was modified by the ion-assisted reaction. When the amount of ion-irradiation was $1{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$cm^2$, the friction coefficients of composites were about 0.1 and the wear mode was stable, whereas, the friction coefficient of non-treatment composites were about 0.16 and the wear mode was very unstable. But if the amount of ion-irradiation was $5{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$cm^2$, the friction coefficients were higher rather than that of $1{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$cm^2$. Consequently, the amount of ion-irradiation was not in proportion to the friction coefficients, and it was conformed that the optimal conditions would exist between broth of them.

  • Several Pt-based oxidation catalysts with different loading were prepared with various metal precursor solutions and characterized with H$_2$ chemisorption and TEM for Pt particle size. V was added to Pt-based catalyst for inhibiting SO$_2$oxidation reaction, as result, Pt-V/Ti-Si catalyst prepared by ERMS(Free Reduced Metal in Solution) method showed high enough activity and better inhibition on SO$_2$oxidation than Pt only catalyst. Optimum Pt particle size for diesel oxidation reaction turned out to be the size of around 20 nm. A prototype catalyst was prepared for light=duty diesel passenger car, and teated for the emission reduction performance with Korean regulation test mode(CVS-75 mode) on chassis dynamometer. The catalyst shows the performance reduction of 75~94% for CO, 53~67% for HC and 10~31% for PM. In the case of heavy-duty diesel catalyst, the domestic formal regulation teat mode D-13 was adopted for both Na engine and Turbo engine. The conversions of CO and THC are high enough(86% and 41%) while the reductions of NOx and PM are relatively low(3~11%).

  • Due to the active progress in space programs for various types of ground and space missions, the high agile spacecraft maneuverability is also required. To meet the requirement of the given space missions, the Control Moment Gyros (CMG) for the alternatives of the classical reaction wheels can release the attitude maneuverability restrictions. In addition, the angular rates of the spacecraft is constrained due to the limited actuator characteristics. In this paper, a sliding mode control technique for the attitude control of the spacecraft equipped with the pyramid type of CSCMG(Constant Speed CMG) is designed, and the stability of the control system is guaranteed by using the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, the control law proposed is analyized by numertical simulations.

  • The vibration behavior of fuel rods has been analyzed by FEM in consideration of axial force and support spring constants. The axial compression force on the fuel rod in reactor decreases with the fuel rod burnup, and its decrease makes the natural frequencies of fuel rod considerably increase. The change of support spring constant can contribute to the remarkable change of the mode shapes, but not greatly to the natural frequencies. The reaction forces of support springs are obtained from normalizing the lst mode with the max. 0.2 mm displacement. The calculated reaction forces are larger than the previous results obtained by disregarding the deflections of the support springs.
