  • This study has been carried out to look into the characteristics of an oxidative-dissolution of fission products (FP) co-dissolved with uranium (U) in a $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ carbonate solution. Simulated FP-oxides which contained 12 components have been added to the solution to examine their dissolution characteristics. It is found that $H_2O_2$ is an effective oxidant to minimize the oxidative-dissolution of FP. In the 0.5 M $(NH_4)_2CO_3$-0.5 M $H_2O_2$ solution, some elements such as Re, Te, Cs and Mo seem to be dissolved together with U, while 98${\pm}$2% for Re and Te, 94${\pm}$2% for Cs, and 29${\pm}$2 % for Mo are dissolved for 2 hours. It is revealed that dissolution rates of Re, Te and Cs are high (completely dissolved within 10${\sim}$20 minutes) due to their high solubility in the $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ solution regardless of the addition of $H_2O_2$, and independent of the concentrations of $Na_2CO_3$ and $H_2O_2$. However, the dissolution ratio of Mo seems to be slightly increased with time and about 33 % for 4 hours, indicating a very slow dissolution rate and also independent of the $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ concentration. It is found that the most important factor for the oxidative-dissolution of FP is the pH of the solution and an effective dissolution is achieved at a pH between 9${\sim}$10 in order to minimize the dissolution of FP.

  • Woolastonite from Susan occurs as intercalations in limestone beds of Lower Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup. It is a thermal metamorphic product of impure limestone. Electron microprobe analysis shows that it is considerably pure wollastonite. It has triclinic cell with a=7.932$\AA$, b=7.328$\AA$, c=7.069$\AA$, $\alpha$=89.995$^{\circ}$, $\beta$=$95.255^{\circ}$, and $ \Upsilon=103.367^{\circ}$.Dissolution behaviors of wollastonite have been studied conducting three different dissolution experiments; two different reactions with HC1 (one batch and one re-initialization experiment) and one traction with distilled water. In the batch type powder wollastonite-HCl reaction, pH of solution rapidly increases in the early stage and then its rate of increase slows down to reach plateau resulting in parabolic relationship with time. It is represented by the early rapid rise and fall in pH giving a sharp pH-edge and succeeding slow rise in the re-initialization experiment. The early rapid rise in pH is due to the rapid sorption of H- in solution to oxygens on the reactive surface of wollastonite and the fall in pH means that all reactive surface sites are occupied by H- ions and no more H- adsorption occurs. The slow rise in pH following the pH- edge is due to the dissolution of wollastonite as evidenced by the correlation of pH variation and cation concentration. Dissolution of powder wollastonite in HCl shows linear trend with time. Si is dissolved predominantly over Ca at a constant rate. Ca is dissolved predominantly in the very early stage. Dissolution rate of coarse-grained wollastonite fragments in distilled water is parabolic with times howing a rapid reaction in the early stage and a slow reaction in the advanced stage. The Ca/Si ratio in solution is high in the case of coarse-grained wollastonite fragment as compared with powder wollastonite. The coarse-grained wollastonite fragment-water (acid) reaction resulted in the solution with an elevated constant pH value (alkaline) giving an important significance on the environmental view point.

  • This study was carried out to examine the stability of $Na_2CO_3-H_2O_2$ carbonate solution with aging time in the dissolving solution after oxidative dissolution of U by a carbonate solution, the Cs/Re filtrate after selective precipitation of Cs and Re (as a surrogate for Tc), and the acidification filtrate after precipitation of U by acidification, respectively. The compositions of dissolving solution were not changed with ageing time, and the selective precipitation of Re and Cs was also not affected without regard to the aging time of dissolving solution. The successive removal of Cs and Re from a carbonate dissolving solution was possible. However, the recovery yield of U by acidification was decreased with increasing the aging time of the dissolving solution and the Cs/Re-filtrate, respectively, because U was converted from the uranyl peroxocarbonato complex to the uranyltricarbonate in the solution aged for a long time. Accordingly, it is effective that a dissolving solution and a Cs/Re filtrate are treated within the aging of 7 days, respectively, in order to recover U more than 99%. On the other hand, the recovery of U was carried out in order of the oxidative dissolution of U selective precipitation of Re and Cs precipitation of U by acidification. Almost all of U and a part of FP were co-dissolved in oxidative dissolution step. Over 99% of Re and Cs from the FP co-dissolved with U could be removed by a TPPCl (tetraphenylphosphonium chloride) and a NaTPB (sodium tetraphenylborate), respectively. U was precipitated nearly 100% by acidification to pH 4. Therefore, it was confirmed that the validity of recovery of U by precipitation methods from a SF (spent fuel) in the $Na_2CO_3-H_2O_2$ solution.

  • It has been known since the mid 1960s that Ag can be photodissolved in chalcogenide glasses to form materials with interesting technological properties. In the 40 years since, this effect has been used in diverse applications such as the fabrication of relief images in optical elements, micro photolithographic schemes, and for direct imaging by photoinduced Ag surface deposition. ReRAM, also known as conductive bridging RAM (CBRAM), is a resistive switching memory based on non-volatile formation and dissolution of a conductive filament in a solid electrolyte. Especially, Ag-doped chalcogenide glasses and thin films have become attractive materials for fundamental research of their structure, properties, and preparation. Ag-doped chalcogenide glasses have been used in the formation of solid electrolyte which is the active medium in ReRAM devices. In this paper, we investigated the nature of thin films formed by the photo-dissolution of Ag into Ge-Se glasses for use in ReRAM devices. These devices rely on ion transport in the film so produced to create electrically programmable resistance states. [1-3] We have demonstrated functionalities of Ag doped chalcogenide glasses based on their capabilities as solid electrolytes. Formation of such amorphous systems by the introduction of Ag+ ions photo-induced diffusion in thin chalcogenide films is considered. The influence of Ag+ ions is regarded in terms of diffusion kinetics and Ag saturation is related to the composition of the hosting material. Saturated Ag+ ions have been used in the formation of conductive filaments at the solid electrolyte which is the active medium in ReRAM devices. Following fabrication, the cell displays a metal-insulator-metal structure. We measured the I-V characteristics of a cell, similar results were obtained with different via sizes, due to the filamentary nature of resistance switching in ReRAM cell. As the voltage is swept from 0 V to a positive top electrode voltage, the device switches from a high resistive to a low resistive, or set. The low conducting, or reset, state can be restored by means of a negative voltage sweep where the switch-off of the device usually occurs.

  • In this study, a comparative dissolution experiment was conducted between an immediate-release and a controlled-release vitamin C tablet applied with a technology to control the dissolution of vitamin C to maintain the vitamin C level in the human body. In order to confirm the dissolution rate (%) of vitamin C tablets, HPLC determination was conducted based on the dissolution test methods in the 'Korean Pharmacopoeia (No. 2020-88),' 'Guidelines on Specifications of Dissolution Tests for Oral dosage Forms,' and 'Standard and Specifications for Health Functional Foods (No. 2020-63)' from Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). In addition, the dissolution pattern between the immediate-release tablet and the controlled-release tablet was comparatively analyzed. The analysis result confirmed that the immediate-release vitamin C tablet was 100% dissolved after 45 minutes, while the controlled-release vitamin C tablet was 100% dissolved after 480 minutes (8 hours). Furthermore, the dissolution rate (%) at 60 minutes was slower than that of the immediate-release vitamin C tablet. Based on these results, this study confirmed that the dissolution rate (%) test and development of controlled-release tablets containing vitamin C as the main component a re possible.

  • The surface of silicon dummy wafers is contaminated with metallic impurities owing to the reaction with and adhesion of chemicals during the oxidation process. These metallic impurities negatively affect the device performance, reliability, and yield. To solve this problem, a wafer-cleaning process that removes metallic impurities is essential. RCA (Radio Corporation of America) cleaning is commonly used, but there are problems such as increased surface roughness and formation of metal hydroxides. Herein, we attempt to use a chelating agent (EDTA) to reduce the surface roughness, improve the stability of cleaning solutions, and prevent the re-adsorption of impurities. The bonding between the cleaning solution and metal powder is analyzed by referring to the Pourbaix diagram. The changes in the ionic conductivity, H2O2 decomposition behavior, and degree of dissolution are checked with a conductivity meter, and the changes in the absorbance and particle size before and after the reaction are confirmed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses. Thus, the addition of a chelating agent prevents the decomposition of H2O2 and improves the life of the silicon wafer cleaning solution, allowing it to react smoothly with metallic impurities.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of solution treatment on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of cast AZ91-4%RE magnesium alloy. In the as-cast state, microstructure of the AZ91-4%RE alloy was characterized by intermetallic ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$, $Al_{11}RE_3$ and $Al_2RE$ phase particles distributed in ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix. After solution treatment, the ${\beta}$ particles with low melting point dissolved into the matrix, but Al-RE phases still remained due to their high thermal stabilities. It was found from the immersion and potentiodynamic polarization tests that corrosion rate of the AZ91-4%RE alloy increased after the solution treatment. On the contrary, EIS tests and EDS compositional analyses on the surface corrosion products indicated that the stability of the corrosion product was improved after the solution treatment. Examinations on the corroded microstructures for the ascast and solution-treated samples revealed that dissolution of the ${\beta}$ particles which play a beneficial role in suppressing corrosion propagation, would be responsible for the deterioration of corrosion resistance after the solution treatment. This result implies that the microstructural features such as amount, size and distribution of secondary phases that determine corrosion mechanism, are more influential on the corrosion rate in comparison with the stability of surface corrosion product.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different preparation methods on the recovery and quantification of ginsenosides in raw Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer). Eight major ginsenosides ($Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, $Rb_3$, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, and $Rg_1$) were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), after which the recovery and repeatability of the extraction of those ginsenosides using 3 different preparation methods were compared [A. direct extraction (DE) method, hot MeOH extraction/evaporation/direct dissolution; B. solid phase extraction (SPE) method, hot MeOH extraction/evaporation/dissolution/$C_{18}$ cartridge adsorption/MeOH elution; C. liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method, hot MeOH extraction/evaporation/dissolution/n-BuOH fractionation]. Use of the DE method resulted in a significantly higher recovery of total ginsenosides than other methods and a relatively clear peak resolution. Use of the SPE and LLE methods resulted in clearer peak resolution, but lower ginsenoside recovery than the DE method. The LLE method showed the lowest ginsenoside recovery and repeatability among the 3 methods. Given that the DE method employed only extraction, evaporation, and a dissolution step (avoiding complicate and time consuming purification), this technique may be an effective method for the preparation and quantification of ginsenosides from raw Korean ginseng.
