  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of self-esteem and consumer socialization agents on rational consumption patterns of middle school students. Using a convenient sampling method, the data were collected from middle schools in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeonnam, and Gwangju and a total of 412 copies were analyzed. The descriptive statistics, Chronbach's α, t-test, and stepwise regression analysis were performed using the SPSS and the results were as follows. First, rational consumption behavior was 3.18 and self-esteem was 3.54 on a 5-Likert scale. As for consumer socialization agents, parents was the highest at 3.13, followed by school 2.83, mass media 2.78 and peers 2.73. Second, the average comparison of rational consumption behavior and consumer socialization agents by gender showed that there was no gender difference in rational consumption behavior, but in the case of consumer socialization, girls were higher than boys. Third, examining the influence of self-esteem and consumer socialization agents on rational consumption behavior, it was found that the amount of money, mass media, and peers showed an negative effects on rational consumption behavior, while self-esteem and parents showed positive effects on rational consumption behavior. In this regard, middle school students need to have more self-esteem and guide their peers so that their influence can be positive in the home economics class in order to become consumers with rational consumption behavior.

  • Recently, safety evaluation of structures has received great concern in this country. One major problem in safety evaluation is that the results are often quite different depending upon evaluation authority. This is mainly due to arbitrary selection of various modification factors when employing allowable stress method for safety evaluation, The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to establish a rational method to determine the modification factors, especially the stress modification factor and the deterioration modification factor based on visual examination. It is thought that the proposed method yields a rational and consistent result for safety evaluation and may efficiently be used for realistic evaluation of load capacity of bridge structures.

  • Some of satellites such as IKONOS don't provide the orbital elements so that we can’ utilize the physical sensor model. Therefore, Rational Function Model(RFM) which is one of mathematical models could be a feasible solution. In order to improve 3D geopositioning accuracy of IKONOS stereo imagery, Rational Polynomial Coefficients(RPCs) of the RFM need to be updated with Ground Control Points(GCPs). In this paper, a method to improve RPCs of RFM using GCPs and 3D cube is proposed. Firstly, the image coordinates of GCPs are observed. And then, using offset values and scale values of RPC provided, the image coordinates and ground coordinates of 3D cube are initially determined and updated RPCs are computed by the iterative least square method. The proposed method was implemented and analyzed in several cases: different numbers of 3D cube layers and GCPs. The experimental results showed that the proposed method improved the accuracy of RPCs in great amount.

  • This paper presents a system identification method for multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) systems, by which a rational polynomial transfer function model is identified from experimentally determined frequency response function data. Analytically determined information is incorporated in this method to obtain a more reliable model, even in the frequency range where the excitation energy is limited. To verify the suggested method, shaking table test for an actively controlled two-story, bench-scale building employing an active mass damper is conducted. The results show that the proposed method is quite effective and robust for system identification of MIMO systems.

  • In parametric surface interpolation, the choice of the parameter values to the set of scattered points makes a great deal of difference in the resulting surface. A new method is developed and tested for the parametrization in NURBS surface global interpolation. This method uses the parameter value at the maximal value of relevant rational basis function, to assign the parameter values to the arbitrary set of design data. This method gives us several important advantages in geometric modeling, the freedom of the selection of knot values, the feasible transformation of the data set to the matrix, the possibility of affinite transformation between the design data and generated surface, etc.

  • Causes of the levee collapse are directly or indirectly associated with geotechnical engineering as well as hydraulics. In this paper, literature survey and analysis were conducted to present the alternatives in geotechnical engineering issues for rational levee design. The alternatives include the reasonable river-bed soil utilization and precautions of numerical analysis and slope stability analysis, disruption type and improvement method of drainage facility.

  • The main contribution of this research is that it gives:(1) a rational criterion to select the best self-localizing method for a particular situation, and (2) an appropriate arrangement of the landmarks to minimize the error. In this paper, the authors propose a set of indices to evaluate the accuracy of the self-localizing methods, and the indices are derived from a sensitivity which is defined as the ratio of the localizing error to sensor error. And then, we compare the accuracy of self-localizing a mobile robot with landmarks based on the indices, and propose a rational way to minimize the localizing error.

  • Complex variable methods are used to solve the first and the second fundamental problems for infinite plate with two holes having arbitrary shapes which are conformally mapped on the domain outside of the unit circle by means of rational mapping function. Some applications are investigated and some special cases are derived.

  • A solution for Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem with low complexity is constructed via non-recursive method. More precisely, a stable rational function satifying the given interpolation data in the complex right half plane is found by solving a homogeneous interpolation problem related to a minial interpolation problem for the given data in the right half plane together with its mirror-image data.

  • A structural system developed and named 'Pantadome system' by the author has been applied to six major spatial structures of various shapes and dimensions in different corners of the world. It is a structures system (not a construction method) incorporation a temporary 'kinematic mechanism' in it for a rational construction of domical structures. Nara Convention Hall has recently been constructed successful on the principle of Pantadome System. In the present paper raison d'etre, principle and newly applied examples of Panatadome System are presented.
