  • Generally, an unsaturated condition was not considered to predict the long-term strength and drainage behaviors on compacted road foundations. However, it is logical way to consider the unsaturated condition and hysteresis behavior on road foundations like subbase and subgrade. For more quantitative analysis, rational experimental approach requires proper laboratory tool and material model, and hydraulic properties of pavement geomaterials under unsaturated conditions. In this study, therefore, laboratory data from the soil-water characteristic curve tests were used to predict suction and unsaturated permeability on pavement foundations and the results were analyzed based on the nonlinear fitting model considered. In addition to that, the unsaturated moisture capacity of each material is discussed.

  • Elliptic curves are a common theme among various fields of mathematics, such as number theory, algebraic geometry, complex analysis, cryptography, and mathematical physics. In the history of elliptic curves, we can find number theoretic problems on the one hand, and complex function theoretic ones on the other. The elliptic curve theory is a synthesis of those two indeed. As an overview of the history of elliptic curves, we survey the Diophantine equations of 3rd degree and the congruent number problem as some of number theoretic trails of elliptic curves. We discuss elliptic integrals and elliptic functions, from which we get a glimpse of idea where the name 'elliptic curve' came from. We explain how the solution of Diophantine equations of 3rd degree and elliptic functions are related. Finally we outline the BSD conjecture, one of the 7 millennium problems proposed by the Clay Math Institute, as an important problem concerning elliptic curves.

  • 2D input data have to be converted into 3D data by means of some functions and menu system in 2D input modeling system. But data in 3D input system for virtual spatial design can be directly connected to the 3D modeling data. Nevertheless, efficient surface modeling and deformation algorithm for the 3D input modeling system are not proposed yet. In this paper, problems of conventional NURBS surface deformation methods which can occur when applied in the 3D input modeling system are introduced. And NURBS surface deformation by 3D target curves, in which the designer can easily approach, are suggested. Designer can efficiently implement the virtual spatial sketching and design by using the proposed deformation algorithm.

  • In this paper, a ship calculation program is developed, which prof[nuts hydrostatics and volume calculation intact and damage stability and hull variation. Hull form and compartment geometry are expressed with NURBS curve wire-frame model. Hydrostatics and volume calculation are performed directly with the intersection method between section geometry and 3D planar surface. Equilibrium ship position is calculated with hydrostatic equilibrium equation which is linearized by 1st order Taylor series expansion sequentially. The developed program shows more accurate results and easy uses than the latter.

  • As a preliminary step to build a complete superyacht hull design program, the development of superyacht profile design system is introduced. The two-dimensional hull profile is decomposed into four local zones depending upon the functionality and connecting continuity of the profile. Characteristics of each zone are investigated and used to generate the model describing the geometric shape of zone using freeform curves. A set of design parameters is derived from the established geometric model. Generation and modification of a model are is by manipulating the chosen parameters. Four zones designed are integrated to form a final profile. An interactive design system performing all the modeling and modification processes is implemented using the graphic user interface system based an Microsoft Foundation Class and OpenCASCADE, a open graphic library. The shapes of the profiles generated by the developed design system are verified with those of built superyachts. The developed design system will be used for the construction of three-dimensional superyacht hull modeling system.

  • The soil-water characteristics is the most important state parameter for understanding changes in suction and water contents of unsaturated soil slopes. In the field, the hysteretic behaviors of drying and wetting soil-water characteristic curve are real and the adoption of path-dependent suction-water content is needed to predict the hydro-mechanical analysis of unsaturated soils. In this study, in-situ monitored hydraulic behavior of various soil slopes are compared with the data from numerical analysis with the laboratory soil water characteristic curve. Then, the verifications are performed based on the field monitored data respectively. Therefore, the use of path-dependent soil-water characteristic curves could be more rational for design and analysis of unsaturated soil slopes under rainfall conditions.

  • The minimum reinforcement ratio is an important design factor to prevent a brittle failure in RC flexural members. A minimum reinforcement ratio is presented by assuming an effective depth of cross-section and moment arm lever in CDC and KHBDC. In this study, it suggests that a rational method for minimum reinforcement ratio is calculated by material model and force equilibrium. As results, a minimum reinforcement ratio using a p-r curve in KHBDC is evaluated about 52~80% of recent design code's value and it induces an economical design. And also, a ductility capacity in case of placing this minimum reinforcement amount is evaluated about 89% of recent design code's value, but ductility in a member is 7 or more, so it has a sufficient ductility capacity. Therefore, it is judged that a minimum reinforcement ratio using p-r curve has a theoretical rationality, safety and economy in a flexural member design.

  • The purpose of this study was evaluated on achievement of the Target water quality (TWQ) with Load Duration Curve (LDC) as well as materials collected through the implementation of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), targeting 41 unit watersheds in the Nakdong River Basin in korea, and examines the adequacy of the LDC method to evaluate the TWQ by comparing methods through current regulations. It aims to provide basic materials for TMDL development in Korea. This determination resulted from the fact that the measured data placed on the LDC mean that they are beyond TWQ in a certain condition of water flow when actually measured load values were displayed in a form of LDC. In addition to water quality surveys, it is considered that information on the level of damage in a water body by water flow grade can be utilized as a basic material to identify compliance with the total admitted quantity, and establish rational plans to improve water quality. This information helps in the identification of the degree of damage in water quality according to water flow.

  • Increasing demand on precision machining using computerized numerical control (CNC) machines have necessitated that the tool move not only with the smallest possible position error but also with smoothly varying feedrates in 3-dimensional (3D) space. This paper presents the simultaneous 3D machining process investigated using a retrofitted PC-NC milling machine. To achieve the simultaneous 3-axis motions, a new precision interpolation algorithm for 3D Non Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curve is proposed. With this accurate and efficient algorithm for the generation of complex 3D shapes, a real-time NURBS interpolator was developed using a PC and the simultaneous 3D machining was accomplished satisfactorily.
