Achyrantes japonica (AJ) has been used to treat edema and arthritis in the traditional Korean medicine. To elucidate the anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive effects of ethanol extract of AJ, the carrageenan-induced paw edema using a plethysmometer and thermal hypersensitivity using the plantar test were measured. Ibuprofen was used as a control drug. Treatment with AJ (200mg/kg p.o.) significantly reduced paw edema, compared to the carrageenan - treated rats. In the plantar test, the thermal withdrawal latency in AJ - treated group was significantly increased than the carrageenan - treated group. The results indicate that AJ could have be the anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive properties.

PURPOSE : Euonymi Lignum Suberalatum (EL) is the stem fin of Euonymi alatus. In traditional Korean medicine, EL is used for treatment of uterine bleeding, metritis and static blood. Recently, many studies have reported several pharmacological effects of EL including anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic activity, and anti-oxidative stress. However, the mechanisms underlying anti-inflammatory effects by the EL is not established. METHODS : To investigate anti-inflammatory effects of Euonymi Lignum Suberalatum Water (ELWE), Raw 264.7 cells were pre-treated with $10-300{\mu}g/mL$ of ELWE, and then exposed to $1{\mu}g/mL$ of LPS. Levels of NO, IL-6, $IL-1{\beta}$ and $TNF-{\alpha}$ were detected by ELISA kit. Expression of pro-inflammatory proteins were determined by immunoblot analysis. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect in vivo, rat paw edema volume, and expressions of COX-2 and iNOS proteins in carrageenan (CA)-induced rat paw edema model. RESULTS : NO production activated by LPS, was decreased by $30-300{\mu}g/mL$ of ELWE. Production of inflammatory mediators such as $TNF-{\alpha}$, ILs, $PGE_2$ were decreased by ELWE 100 and $300{\mu}g/mL$. In addition, ELWE reduced LPS-mediated iNOS and COX-2 expression. Moreover, ELWE increased $I-{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ expression in cytoplasm and decreased $NF-{\kappa}B$ expression in nucleus. In vivo study, ELWE reduced the increases of paw swelling, and expression of iNOS and COX-2 proteins in paw edema induced by CA injection. CONCLUSION : The results indicate that ELWE could inhibit the acute inflammatory response, via modulation of $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation. Furthermore, inhibition of rat paw edema induced by CA is considered as clear evidence that ELWE may be a useful source to treat acute inflammation.
The effects of ethanolic extract (EEP) of propolis on chronic inflammation were evaluated using rat adjuvant arthritis. In the chronic inflammatory animal model, the arthritis index was suppressed by EEP treatments (50 mg/kg/day and 100 gm/kg/day, p.o.). Moreover, physical weakness, induced by the chronic disease state, was dose-dependently improved in the EEP-treated groups. It s analgesic effect, assessed using the tail-flick test, was comparable to prednisolone (2.5 mg/kg/day, p.o.) and acetyl salicylic acid (100 mg/kg/day, p.o.). In carrageenan rat hind paw edema, which was conducted to test the effects of subfractions of EEP, the petroleum ether sub-fraction (100 mg/kg, p.o.) showed an inhibitor effect on the paw edema whereas EEP (200 mg/kg, p.o.) showed a significant anti-inflammatory effect at 3 and 4 hrs after carrageenan injection. From these results, we conclude that the ethanolic extract of propolis had a profound anti-inflammatory effects on both chronic and acute inflammations.
Antiinflammatory activity of an 1% flurbiprofen transdermal gel was evaluated using the carrageenan-Induced rat paw edema method. The application of 50 mg of the gel on the rat hind paw, at various time intervals from 0 to 24 hrs before the carrageenan injection, significantly inhibited edema formation in all groups of dosed rats, indicating that the antiinflammatory activitv was maintained up to 24 hrs after the transdermal application of the 1% flurbiprofen gel. The topical $ED_{50}$ of flurbiprofen in the gel was 1.0 mg/kg, whereas the oral $ED_{50}$ of the drug in a suspension was 1.7 mg/kg.
Objectives : Jigal-san (JGS, 止渴散) has been used in East Asia including Korea, Japan and China for the treatment of breast inflammatory disorders and severe thirst. JGS originated from Euimunpalbeob (醫門八法; Yimenbafa) composed of Lonicerae Flos and Taraxaci Herba. According to previous studies Lonicerae Flos and Taraxaci Herba have an anti-inflammatory effect, respectively. But, there is no studies regarding on the effects of JGS in the immunological activities. The present study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of JGS in vitro and in vivo. Methods : Cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay, and NO was evaluated by content of the nitrite content in culture medium. TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 were quantified by ELISA. The protein expression of NF-κB, MAPKs, and iNOS were assessed by western blot analysis. Furthermore, the effects of JGS on acute inflammation were observed in rat paw edema model. Results : The JGS ameliorates the LPS-activated changes in the protein expression of NF-κB, p-JNK, and iNOS, as well as the production of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines. In rat paw edema study, administration of 0.3 and 1.0 g/kg of JGS for 4 consecutive days inhibited the carrageenan (CA)-induced increases of edema and iNOS expression. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that JGS has anti-inflammatory effect in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells through decreasing the production of inflammatory mediators, via suppression of the NF-κB and MAPK pathways (JNK, not p-38 and ERK). In addition, the results of the CA-induced paw edema indicate that JGS ameliorates an inflammatory edema. Therefore, the present study could provide scientific evidence for the anti-inflammatory effect of JGS as well as the underlying mechanisms.
The root of Patrinia villosa Jussieu (Valerianaceae) has long been used for treatment of infectious diseases in Korea. In this study, the anti-inflammatory effect of the Patrinia villosa root water extract (PVWX) was investigated in proteinase-activated receptor-2 (PAR2)-mediated rat paw edema. Paw edema was induced by injection of trypsin or $trans-cinnamoyl-LIGRLO-NH_2\;(tc-NH_2)$ into hindpaw of rats. PVWX. (10, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg) was orally administered 1 h before the induction of inflammation. At doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg, PVWX. showed significant inhibition on both change in paw volume and vascular permeability. PVWX. (100 mg/kg) significant1y inhibited PAR2 agonists-induced myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in paw tissue. These results indicate that PVWX has an anti-inflammatory action in PAR2-mediated paw edema.
Kami Eui In Tang is being used as a treatment oral medicament on the appendicitis and peritonitis without surgical operation resulting good effect. The component of the medicament are as follow : Coix ma yuen, Paeonia moutan, Patrinia scabiosifolia, Rheum, Coreanum, Cory-dalis nakaii, Trichosanthes kirilowii, Lonicera japonica, Prunus persica, Tarxacum officinale, Author tried to make clear the ant inflammatory effect on rat paw which has become edema formation by carrageenin and detect the active ingredients by thin layer chromatography method. The material was extracted with three kind of solvent; distilled water, 50% ethyl alcohol, and ether which were immersed in material for 48 hours and concentrated to 10ml by evaporation of solvents. The result was as follow: 1. The anti-inflammatory effect of the sample material on the. edema formed at the rat paw was obviously clear. 2. Many spots of active ingredients were detected on the silica gel G plate spotted by ether extracted material than water one. 3. The good developing solvent was the mixture of $CHCl_3$ ; Acetone : Diethylamine (5:4:1).

According to oriental clinic effect findings hitherto, Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang has been curative effects on chronic pharnygitis, acute tensillitis and angina. Auther tried to make clear the anti-inflammatory effect on rat paw which has become edema formation by $5\%$ of acetic acid/saline solution, and the analgesic effect on mouse thorough method of acetic acid because the medicine decoction of Kamipilyongbangkamgil-Tang, Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang, and the extracted powder of Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang are administered to rat and mouse. In present report, anti-inflammatory, analgesic effect of Pilyongbangkamkil-Tang, the extracted powder of the above prescription and Kamipilyongbangkamgil-Tang were estimated by the above test. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Kamipilyongbangkamgil-Tang (liquid), Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang and the extracted powder of Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang were tested for analgesic effects; Kamipilyongbangkamgil-Tang has the most effective analgesic function, then Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang, then the extracted powder, and I found that the t-test of those above prescriptions, in this order, should come to the result of voluntariness P〈0.001, P〈0.02, and P〈0.05 respectively. 2. Analgesic effects of pilyongbangkamgil-Tang and the extracted powder against the mouse pain induced by acetic acid have been strengthened by increase of double dosage and 4 fold dosage. 3. With Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang and Kamipilyongbangkamgil-Tang treated for rat, the increasing and the inhibitory rate of rat paw edema formation showed significantly statistical values, and the anti-inflammatory effect of the extracted powder of Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang is not supported so long than Pilyongbangkamgil-Tang. 4. The anti-inflammatory effect of Kamipilyongkamgil-Tang on the edema formed at the rat paw appeared significantly statistical value than the other sample.
Objective : The aim of this study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of 15Hz electroacupuncture(EA) on carrageenan-injected rats. Inflammation was induced by an intraplantar injection of 1% carrageenan into the right hind paw. Methods : Bilateral EA stimulation with 15 Hz were delivered at those acupoints corresponding to Zusanli and Sanyinjiao in man via the needles for a total of 30 min duration in carrageenan-injected rats. Results: The developing edema was measured 30 minutes interval afer carrageenan injection and 15 Hz EA stimulation presented significant edema inhibition. Three hours after carrageenan injection, prostaglandin $E_2(PGE_2)$ and nitric oxide(NO) levels were measured. The 15Hz EA stimulation significantly inhibited $PGE_2$ and NO production in the right paw. The pro-inflammatory mRNA expression such as cyclooxygenases(COX)-2 and interleukin(IL)-$1{\beta}$ were slightly down-regulated by EA stimulation. The number of COX-2, IL-$1{\beta}$, tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ immunoreactive cells were abundantly observed in paw edema. But these cells were decreased in nmber according to anti-edema effect of 15Hz EA. Conclusions: These results indicate that 15Hz EA stimulation have an alleviation action against carrageenan-induced edema and local inflammation.
Experiments were carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of Caragana chamlagu $L_{AMARCK}$ roots, which was known to be effective as antineuralgic, antirheumatic and antiarthritic, etc. in the folk cures of this country. The ether extract of the root has shown significant effects against the rat paw edema induced by 1% carrageenin and its potency was comparable with acetylsalicylic acid, a anti-inflammatory drug, when given orally in 5% acacia gum suspension. The ethanol and hexane extracts, on the other hand, stimulated the formation of rat paw edema under the same experimentation.
