It is not long since treatment of food waste became a social problem. However, it is a fact that there have been a lot of debates on the treatment of food waste since several years ago. At present, two ways of disposing food waste are under great interest in Korea and Japan. One is drying of food waste at high temperature. The other is disappearance type, in which analysis by microorganism takes place with continuous supply of a bulking agent for a certain period of time that was stored in a reactor. In our laboratory, Disappearance type Food Waste Disposer is under interest, and experiments regarding condition establishment for efficient analysis of food waste were conducted. As preceding experimentation, experiments were done with regard to the selection of a substance to be used as a bulking agent, improvement by addition of a substance which maximizes initial growth of microorganism, and a concentration change in rank odors generated by reaction with deodorizer (absorbent). The results turned out to be satisfactory.
It is important to evaluate nutritional status of elderly patients receiving dialysis, since wasting and malnutrition are their common problems. This study aims at assessing their nutritional status by the type and duration of dialysis. The nutritional status such as somatic fat and protein storage was evaluated with anthropometric measure including weight/height ratio, triceps skinfold thickness and midarm muscle circumference. It was also measured with albumin, transferrin, C3 and IGF-1 and calorie and protein intakes. The general clinical condition of patients was evaluated with the severity of uremia and metabolic acidosis. which were measured through the levels of serum urea, creatinine and bicarbonateion. The data were analyzed by using t-test, ANOVA, Wilcoxon-rank sums test, Scheffe test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Pearson correlation coefficients. The results are following : 1. There was no significant difference in the calorie and protein intakes by the type and duration of dialysis received. 2. As for the anthropometric measures, no significant difference was found by the type of dialysis in body mass index triceps skinfold thickness and midarm muscle circumference. Yet these anthropometric measures differed significantly by the duration of dialysis in those elderly patients receiving hemodialysis(HD group), but this finding was not found in those receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis(CAPD). 3. Regarding the indicators of uremia and metabolic acidosis, blood urea nitrogen(BUN) and creatinine were lower in the CAPD group than in the HD group, whereas bicarbonate ion was higher in the CAPD group than in the HD group, with no statistical significance. In the HD group, creatinine increased significantly with the increase of the duration of dialysis. 4. Serum trasferrin and C3 were significantly higher in the CAPD group than in the HD group. However. each of biochemical indices did not show statistical significance by the duration of dialysis in both HD and CAPD groups. 5. Anthropometric measures were significantly associated with dietary intake. Significant correlations were observed between biocarbonate ion, BUN and creatinine. In addition, the correlations between serum protein and albumin and between transferrin and C3 were statistically significant. Yet, IGF-1 revealed no significant correlation with other nutritional indices. The above findings indicate that there were no difference in nutritional status measured with protein and calorie intakes between the type and duration of dialysis, but CAPD seems to benefit correcting uremia and metabolic acidosis than HD. Studies of dietary management for dialysis patients need to be pursued in order to improved the quality of aged patients receiving dialysis.
This study was conducted to identify the family problems of the in-patients and to analize factors Influencing to the family problems. The subjects for this study were 277 family members those who were giving care for the adult patients during hospitalized in general wards at Seoul National University Hospital in Seoul. Data were collected through interviews with the questionnaire from September second to September twentieth in 1989. The instrument used for this study was the family problems scale which was developed by the researcher. Analysis of data was done by frequency, percent, mean, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson-Correlation Coefficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. General characteristics of the care-giver in family. The average age of care-givers was 37.9 years, and the $26.4\%$ of monthly Income of family was 310,000-500,000 won group. The $93.5\%$ of family had taken the responsibility of caring for the patients instead of hiring the care-givers, and the $12.3\%$of the care-givers complained weakning of health status during care giving for the patients. The spouse took the largest part of responsibility of the care-giving services to the patient among the family members. 2. General characteristics of the patients. The average age of patient was 47 years, and the $80.9\%$ of patient was married status. The $39\%$ of patient was father in the position of family, and the $41.5\%$ had the responsibility to support their family before hospitalization. The average hospitalization period of patient was 24.3 day and the $50.9\%$ had admission experience. 3. The factors of family problems which were faced by the family were classified into six problems. The factors of family problems were ranked as follows; the first rank problem was related to care-giving for the patients. the second problem was resulted from the patients diseases, the theirds problem was related with adaptation to the hospital enviroments, the fourth problem was related to the arisen conflicts with medical team. the fifth problem was related to the change of family function. and the sixth problem was the financial problem. 4. The relationship between the family problems and the general charateristics of the care-givers showed that the nuclear type family was higher the family problems, that the admission period of patients became longer, and that the family who had the worse condition of health status of the care givers during care giving for the patients. From the above results, it was confirmed that the family care giving for patients was faced with some problems resulted from patient's illness, relation to the medical team, adaptation to the hospital enviroment, financial problem. change of family function, and care-giving for patients.

Purpose: We analyzed treatment result to examine the outcome for patients with sacral chordoma and to determine relevant prognostic factors. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 19 patients with sacral chordoma seen at out institution between 1990 and 2010. There were 9 men and 10 women with mean age of 56 years. The average follow up was 63 months (range, 25-144 months). 15 patient received surgical treatment, six of these patient had wide, eight had marginal, one had intralesional margin and 4 patient treated with Radiation therapy only. Results: The disease free and overall survival rate for all 19 patients was 34.7% and 79.7% at 5-years, respectively. Statistical analysis using the log-rank test revealed no significant difference between the surgery and radiation therapy groups in overall survival (p=0.54). Nine of 19 patients had local recurrence at a median of 2.5 years postoperatively. Seven of these 9 patients had distant metastasis at a median of 4.5 years postoperatively. Among the variables, tumor size (p=0.033) and tumor involvement of above S3 (p=0.032) were independent prognostic factor for overall survival. Nine of 15 patients who received surgical treatment had postoperative complication such as voiding difficulty and incontinence. Conclusion: Careful consideration of the patient general condition and predictable complication of the treatment might be the best way to improve patient's survival and quality of life.

Objectives: This study examined the effects of 8 types of herbal prescriptions prescribed to alleviate dementia symptoms in a rat model of arterial thrombosis induced by ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$). Methods: Thirty minutes before 35% $FeCl_3$ treatment, SD rats were intraperitoneally injected with the 8 types of herbal prescriptions, respectively. We tested the effects of the herbal prescriptions on time to occlusion (TTO) in an arterial thrombosis model using a laser Doppler flow meter. In addition, thrombus weight (TW) and collagen fiber damages were evaluated in the same condition. Results: Herbal prescriptions showed the following rank-order based on their TTO: Chong-myung-tang (CMT) > modified Jangwonhan 02 (LMK02) > Toki-shakuyaku-san (TSS) ${\geq}$ Oren-gedoku-to (OGT) ${\geq}$ Yokukansan (YKS). In particular, CMT (100 mg/kg, i.p.) and LMK02 (100 mg/kg, i.p.) delayed the TTO the most ($14.83{\pm}0.98$ and $13.67{\pm}1.03$ min, respectively) compared with the vehicle group ($7.95{\pm}0.78$ min, P<0.001). In addition, CMT, LMK02, and OGT treatment ($0.63{\pm}0.01$, $0.66{\pm}0.02$ and $0.67{\pm}0.01$ mg/mm, respectively) significantly reduced thrombus weight compared with the vehicle treatment ($0.78{\pm}0.03$, P<0.001) and also alleviated collagen fiber damage (CMT; $28.40{\pm}2.22$%, LMK02; $30.79 {\pm} 4.07$%, OGT; $26.20{\pm}1.48$%) in the vessels injured by $FeCl_3$. Therefore, CMT and LMK02 showed the greatest preventive activity in rat model of arterial thrombosis induced by $FeCl_3$. Conclusions: These results provide experimental evidence for traditional use of herbal prescriptions, suggesting that CMT and LMK02 extracts could be used to prevent vascular injury and thrombosis in the early stages of dementia.

With the depletion of high grade coal, it is indispensable to be used co-combustion of low rank coal with bituminous coal in pulverized coal-fired power plants. This study describes the detailed measurements of combustion characteristics of bituminous and subbituminous coal in a 0.7MWth pilot-scale test facility. This experimental works include the measurement of gas temperature, gas concentrations along with the reactor axial and radial distance at the condition of excess air ratio of 1.2. The solid sampling was carried out and analyzed with the combustion of bituminous coal. The main reaction zone of coal flame in a reactor was formed about 1 m from the swirl burner, and at downstream, the fully developed temperature and species distribution was observed. The sampled particles of bituminous coal in a reactor revealed the complete carbon burn-out was achieved just after an main combustion zone.
In this paper, we estimate the life cycle from acceleration life test about the hard disk of disk array of image storage of PACS. Webuil distribution was selected by the Anderson-Darling goodness-of-fit test with data of down time at $50^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. The equality test of shape parameter and scale parameter was conducted, so that the probability distribution estimated from data of down time at $50^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ was not statistically significant. The shape parameter was 1.0409, The characteristic life was 24603.5 hours at normal user condition($30^{\circ}C$) by the analysis of weibull-arrhenius modeling which included the acceleration factor of temperature, and The activation energy was 0.5011 eV through arrhenius modeling. The failure analysis of the failure samples of acceleration test and the samples of market return was conducted, so that the share percentage of failure mode was detail difference but the rank of share percentage was almost same. This study suggest the test procedure of acceleration test of hard disk drive in PACS using environment, and help the life estimation at manufacture and use.
Objectives: The $1.8{\pm}1.5$purpose of the study was to investigate the oral health related quality of life according to work factors of firefighters in Korea. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 270 firefighters in Changwon, Gimhae, and Ulsan from June 27 to July 24, 2011 after receiving informed consent. The questionnaire consisted of 5 questions of general characteristics of the subjects, 6 questions of job-related characteristics, and 14 questions of oral health related quality of life(OHIP-14). Data analysis was performed with reliability test, descriptive analysis, t-test, analysis of variance(ANOVA) and multiple regression analysis using SAS(version 9.2) program. Results: The score of oral health related quality of life in firefighters was $10.1{\pm}8.0$. The scores of subscale of the oral health quality of life were $2.4{\pm}1.5$ in physical pain, $1.8{\pm}1.5$ in psychological discomfort, $1.5{\pm}1.5$ in physical disability, $1.4{\pm}1.5$ in functional limitation, $1.3{\pm}1.4$ psychological disability, $0.9{\pm}1.3$ in handicap, and $0.7{\pm}1.3$ in social disability. The related factors of oral health quality of life in firefighters were rank(p=0.016) and the frequency of daily mobilization(p=0.029). Conclusions: Oral health related quality of life in firefighters was relatively in good condition. For the better oral health related quality of life in firefighters, it is important to establish the continuing oral health promotion program for those who have irregular job characteristics and job intensity.
To determine nitrogen balance (Input-Output) of Korea that was asked by Joint Working Party of the Committee for Agriculture and the Environment Policy Committee, OECD, nitrogen input and output were separately investigated as followings: nitrogen input included the amounts of chemical fertilizer consumption, cattle manure production, and biological nitrogen fixation in the national scale, and nitrogen output summed amounts withdrawn by crop and pasture harvesting, and crop residue removal, and lost by denitrification. In 1997, nitrogen balance of Korea was $158kg\;ha^{-1}$ and $211kg\;ha^{-1}$ on including and excluding denitrification loss, respectively. N balance excluded N loss by denitrification and N withdrawal by crop residues on nitrogen output was $250kg\;ha^{-1}$, which OECD asked to except two items from N balance determination because participants were not enough their data. Nitrogen balance was increased to 1.7~2.3 times in 1997 compared with 70 and $162kg\;ha^{-1}$ in 1985, which calculated on the condition of including denitrification and excluding denitrification and removal of crop residues in nitrogen output, respectively. This increase was caused mainly by increasing livestock manure production and chemical fertilizer consumption together with agricultural land area decrease. Nitrogen input was composed with 59% of chemical fertilizer. 42% of cattle manure and 5% of others in 1997, and output was with 73% of crop production, 23% of crop residue withdrawal and 4% of pasture production. Average nitrogen balance excluded N loss by denitrification and N withdrawals by crop residues in 1995~1997 calculated by OECD was $253kg\;ha^{-1}$, which was the second highest rank in OECD participants following $262kg\;ha^{-1}$ of Netherlands. Japanese N balance that has similar farming system with us was $135kg\;ha^{-1}$.
We conducted this study to compare physiological response according to growing conditions between superior and inferior family of Pinus densiflora. In 1981, open-pollinated (OP) progenies of P. densiflora were planted in Chuncheon (CC) and Naju (NJ). We selected KW2 as a superior family and KW23 as a inferior family based on volume index among 30 OP progenies. We calculated general combining ability of each 30 OP progenies in each sites, and compared family growth rank. We collected needles of selected families in CC and NJ, and analyzed chlorophyll content, nitrated reductase (NR) activity, nitrogen content, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) acitivity. In CC, chlorophyll content and nitrogen content were more in needles of KW2 than those of KW23. In NJ, KW2 showed higher NR activity than KW23, and according to site, families in CC showed higher NR activity than those in NJ. SOD activities of both families were higher in NJ, and KW23 showed higher activity than KW2 in both sites. Consequently, inconsistency of the growth performance of two families was caused by different genetic and physiological responses.
