  • In order to reveal the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of Korean and foreign wind turbines, a study was conducted for Korean onshore wind farms. Actual CapEx and OpEx data were obtained from audit reports for 26 onshore wind farms corresponding to 53.87 percent of the total onshore wind farms in Korea in the Data Analysis, Retrieval Transfer (DART) system. In addition, capacity factor (CF) data were calculated from data provided by Statistics Korea. Random numbers were generated from distributions that were fitted by the datasets, which were used as input data to perform a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). The levelized fixed cost (LFC) and the levelized variable cost (LVC) were calculated from distributions of the CapEx, the OpEx and the CF. As a result, the LCOEs of the analyzed total Korean wind farms, and Korean and foreign wind turbines were 147, 148, and 146 USD/MWh, respectively. The averaged LCOE of Korea was estimated to be 4 USD/MWh lower than that of Japan, while it was much higher than German and global averages.

  • Objectives: This study developed a causal relationship model of herb use from observational data and analyzed the direct and indirect effects of herb use on health according to the model. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 400 participants aged 26-59 years, selected through multistage random sampling. The instruments used for data collection included demographic information, herb use, health literacy (HL), perceived social support, societal values, and attitudes toward herb use. The conceptual model, hypothesized based on prior evidence, was tested using confirmatory factor analysis through structural equation modeling. Path coefficients were estimated using the maximum likelihood method. Results: The final model utilized empirical data, which showed that perceived social support had the most significant impact on herb use. This was followed by HL, positive attitudes toward herbal remedies, and societal values, with coefficients of 0.31, 0.18, and 0.16, respectively. When analyzing variables that indirectly affected herb use, it was clear that positive attitudes, perceived social support, and societal values significantly influenced herb use through HL, with influence coefficients of 0.08, 0.16, and 0.04, respectively. Together, these variables accounted for 68% of the variance in herb use. Conclusions: The findings from this study can be utilized to develop and implement strategies that guide the use of herbal products, ultimately aiming to improve human health.

  • Oxidative stress is a well-established risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, emphasizing the need for efficient identification of potent antioxidants. Conventional methods for assessing antioxidant properties are often time-consuming and resource-intensive, typically relying on laborious biochemical assays. In this study, we investigated the applicability of machine learning (ML) algorithms for predicting the antioxidant activity of compounds based solely on their molecular structure. We evaluated the performance of five ML algorithms, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), XGBoost, Random Forest (RF), and Deep Neural Network (DNN), using a dataset of over 1,900 compounds with experimentally determined antioxidant activity. Both RF and SVM achieved the best overall performance, exhibiting high accuracy (> 0.9) and effectively distinguishing active and inactive compounds with high structural similarity. External validation using natural product data from the BATMAN database confirmed the generalizability of the RF and SVM models. Our results suggest that ML models serve as powerful tools to expedite the discovery of novel antioxidant candidates, potentially streamlining the development of future therapeutic interventions.

  • Accurately predicting the bearing capacity of steel and concrete piles is a critical factor in the design and safety of deep foundations. This study presents a novel application of hybrid machine learning models, specifically Invasive Weed Optimization with Multilayer Perceptron (IWOMLP) and Harris Hawks Optimization with Multilayer Perceptron (HHOMLP), for enhancing the prediction of pile bearing capacity. These hybrid models integrate evolutionary optimization algorithms with neural networks, aiming to improve prediction accuracy by addressing the nonlinearities and complexities in pile-soil interaction. The study compares the performance of IWOMLP and HHOMLP against conventional machine learning methods such as Simple Linear Regression, Gaussian Processes, Random Forest, and others. The training and testing phases evaluate the models based on various error metrics, including R2, RMSE, MAE, and additional advanced metrics. The key innovation in this research lies in combining optimization techniques with neural networks, which significantly enhances the model's ability to predict complex geotechnical properties. The primary goal of this work is to develop a reliable, data-driven approach for accurate pile capacity prediction, providing a more precise tool for geotechnical engineers to improve decision-making in foundation design. Results indicate that the hybrid models, particularly IWOMLP, outperform traditional approaches, achieving higher R2 and lower RMSE values. This research demonstrates the potential of hybrid models to advance geotechnical engineering practices by delivering more accurate and reliable predictions.

  • Sontag and Lee (2004) recently developed an objectively measurable instrument, the Proximity of Clothing to Self(PCS) Scale, which measured the psychological closeness of clothing to self. They validated a 4-factor, 24-item PCS Scale for use with adolescents and identified the need for confirmation of the factor structure with other age groups. This paper extends the work of Sontag and Lee by employing the PCS Scale with older persons, age 65 and over, and reports the validation of a 3-factor, 19-item PCS Scale for older persons. A mail survey was sent to a national random sample of 1,700 older Persons by means of a list purchased from a U.S. survey sampling company in late November 2004. Total usuable number of respondents was 250 with an adjusted response rate of 15.6 percent. Three analytical rounds of confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) to test the construct validity of the PCS Scale were conducted by using AMOS 5.0(Analysis of Moment Structures), one of several structural equation modeling(SEM) programs. Completion of three rounds of the CFA resulted in a 3-factor, 19-item PCS Scale with demonstrated construct validity and reliability for older persons. The three PCS dimensions are clothing in relation to 1) self as structure-process(PCS Dimension 1-2-3 combined), 2) self-esteem-evaluative and affective processes(PCS Dimension 4-5 combined), and 3) body image and body cathexis(PCS Dimension 6). The initially hypothesized 6-factor scale(Sontag & Lee, 2004) was not confirmed for adolescents in their study nor with older persons in this study. In addition, the 4-factor solution for the adolescent group did not hold for older persons. It appears that the self-system of older persons is more integrated than may be true for younger individuals. Recommendations for future testing of construct validity of the PCS Scale are made.
