  • The stochastic properties of variation in fatigue crack growth are important in reliability and stability of structures. In this study, the stochastic model for the variation of fatigue crack growth rate was proposed in consideration of nonhomogeneity of materials. For this model, experiments were ocnducted on 7075-T6 aluminum alloy under the constant stress intensity factor range. The variation of fatigue crack growth rate was expressed by random variables Z and r based on the variation of material coefficients C and m in the paris-Erodogan's equation. The distribution of fatigue life with respect to the stress intensity factor range was evaluated by the stochastic Markov chain model based on the Paris-Erdogan's equation. The merit of proposed model is that only a small number of test are required to determine this this function, and fatigue crack growth life is easily predicted at the given stress intensity factor range.

  • This study presents a methodology for the system reliability analysis of cracked structures with random material properties, which are modeled as random fields, and crack geometry under random static loads. The finite element method provides the computational framework to obtain the stress intensity solutions, and the first-order reliability method provides the basis for modeling and analysis of uncertainties. The ultimate structural system reliability is effectively evaluated by the stable configuration approach. Numerical examples are given for the case of random fracture toughness and load.

  • The stresses of surface and substrate under the rough surface contact are irregular. Using rainflow counting method for irregular stresses, the fatigue surface crack initiation lift was calculated. With the surface generated by computer, this paper figures out the random load generated by contacting to the rough surface, analyzes the stress of its subsurface, and calculates the fatigue crack initiation life of the rough surface fatigue theory.

  • The evaluation of specimen thickness effect of fatigue crack growth life by the simulation of probabilistic fatigue crack growth is presented. In this paper, the material resistance to fatigue crack growth is treated as a spatial stochastic process, which varies randomly on the crack surface. Using the previous experimental data, the non-Gaussian(eventually Weibull, in this report) random fields simulation method is applied. This method is useful to estimate the probability distribution of fatigue crack growth life and the variability due to specimen thickness by simulating material resistance to fatigue crack growth along a crack path.

  • This paper presents the thermomechanical and fracture mechanics evaluation procedure of thermal striping damage on the secondary piping of LMFR using Green's function method and standard FEM. The thermohydraulic loading conditions used in the present analysis are simplified sinusoidal thermal loads and the random type data thermal load. The thermomechainical fatigue damage was evaluated according to ASME code subsectionNH. The analysis results of fatigue for the sinusoidal and random load cases show that fatigue failure would occur at a geometrically discontinuous location during 90,000 hours of operation The fracture mechanics analysis showed that the crack would be initiated at an early stage of the operation. The fatigue crack was evaluated to propagate up to 5 ㎜ along the thickness direction during the first 944 and 1083 hours of operation for the sinusoidal and the random loading cases, respectively.

  • Corrosion of RC bridge decks eventually leads to delamination, severe cracking and spalling of the concrete cover. This is a prevalent deterioration mechanism and demands for the most costly repair interventions during the service life of bridges worldwide. On the other hand, decisions for repairs are usually made whenever the extent of a limit crack width, reported in routine visual inspections, exceeds an acceptable threshold level. In this paper, while random fields are applied to account for spatial variation of governing parameters of the corrosion process, an analytical model is used to simulate the corrosion induced crack width. However when dealing with random fields, the Monte Carlo simulation is apparently an inefficient and time consuming method, hence the utility of neural networks as a surrogate in simulation is investigated and found very promising. The proposed method can be regarded as an invaluable tool in decision making concerning maintenance of bridges.

  • Irregular shapes and growth behavior of surface micro-crack showed very complex and nonlinear propeties and many investigators have performed theoretical analysesand experiments on them to characterize fatigue strength. They had difficulties in estimating fatigue life due to random distribution, growth and coalescence of surface micro-cracks. The straightness of crack growth along intergranular and transgranular was prevented from irregular microstructure and precipitates. Euclid geometry can't quantify shape of surface micro-crack but ftractal geometry can. Therefore, it is suggested that average fractal dimension of surface micro-cracks is able to estimate fatigue life but fractal dimension of maximum surface micro-crack is not in Al 2024-T3 alloy.

  • Reliability analysis of structures based on fracture mechanics requires knowledge on statistical characteristics of the parameter C and m in the fatigue crack growth law, $da/dN=C({\Delta}K)^m$. The purpose of the present study is to investigate if it is possible to predict fatigue crack growth rate by only the fluctuation of the parameter C. In this study, Paris-Erdogan law is adopted, where the author treat the parameter C as random and m as constant. The fluctuation of crack growth rate is assumed only due to the parameter C. The growth resistance coefficient of material to fatigue crack growth (Z=1/C) was treated as a spatial stochastic process, which varies randomly on the crack path. The theoretical crack growth rates at various stress intensity factor range are discussed. Constant ${\Delta}K$ fatigue crack growth tests were performed on the structural steel, SM45C. The experimental data were analyzed to determine the autocorrelation function and Weibull distributions of the fatigue crack growth resistance. And also, the effect of the parameter m of Paris' law due to variation of fatigue crack growth resistance was discussed.

It is assumed that the coefficients in the Paris-Erdogan equation are random variables and their distributions are estimated by the method of 2-stage estimation from the fatigue crack growth data. • This paper deals with the crack propagation life assessment of T-joint welded structure where typical fatigue cracks have been frequently initiated when the marine vessels experience the storm load. Welding residual stresses are calculated to investigate its effects on the fatigue life. Thereafter the residual stress distribution was applied to the AFGROW life prediction program, which incorporated the loading, the welding residual stress, and the geometric shape of the structure. The fatigue tests of the T-joint welded specimen under storm loading show the beach mark clearly generated on the fractured section of the weldment. The crack propagation life estimated based on the beach mark is compared with that of AFGROW to validate the life prediction. Based on the results, the evaluation method of the remaining fatigue life for T-joint fillet weldment of marine vessel's cargo hold with random load or storm load was established.
