Rain samples were collected at 10 sites in the Seoul area during the period of August through November, 1985. THe concentrations of the major cations $(H^+, Ca^{++}, MG^{++}, Na^+, K^+, NH_4^+)$ and the major anions $(SO_4^=, NO_3^-, Cl^-)$ were measured to characterize the main sources of chemical ions in rainwater. Correlating concentrations of ions to pH, calculated coefficients ranged from 0.1485 to 0/4296. Sulfate shows the largest coefficient indicating that sulfate is more closely associated with hydrogen ion than other ions. This may suggest that sulfuric acid contributes more to the acidity of rainwater in Seoul. It appears that the major chemicals measured in rainwater are from the anthropogenic sources of air pollution. Predominant chemicals are acidic at the Guro-, the Sinseol-, the Yangnam-, and the Ssangmun-dong with sulfate being the most predominant. IT also indicates that alkaline substances resulting from soil and dust have a significant effect on pH values of rainwater by neutralizing actions. According to Granat-model analysis, it is estimated that the relative contributions to the rainwater acidity in Seoul are 84% from sulfuric acid, 8% from nitric acid and 8% from hydrochloric acid.
It is often assumed that atmospheric observations at remote sites represent long-range transport of airborne material, and local influences are overlooked. We evaluated the impact of local input on the rainwater composition at Gosan Station, a strategic site for monitoring the continental outflow from Asia. We analyzed a 14-year record of rainwater chemical composition archived by the Korea Meteorological Administration and detected local terrestrial contribution for nitrate, sulfate and ammonium. We also measured the chemical composition of rainwater sampled simultaneously at multiple locations within the premises of the Gosan Station, from which local influence with meter-scale spatial heterogeneity could be discerned. We estimate that the local input accounted for at least ~10% of the wet deposition of nitrogen and ~12% of the wet deposition of sulfur during the 14 years. This highlights the significance of the local influence, which should be carefully assessed when interpreting atmospheric observations at this site.
As environmental problems and water-shortage phenomenon become a global issue, many states look for the effective method to use water resources. So, decentralized rainwater management is recognized as a new water management system that rainwater can be infiltrated and used on-site. But it is little difficult to build a park, lake, and forest for evaporating rainwater in city because the land price of city is very high. In order to build an excellent infiltration system for a dwelling and a park in Korea, KICT has developed Linear infiltration system. This infiltration system is consist of first flush treatment, storage and infiltration, overflow control system. These elements are connected closely and working as a combined system. A storm sewer can be changed by the linear infiltration system. This study is to show real application idea about Linear infiltration system with improving some detail in apartments. For this purpose, we devide application idea into the artificial ground and the natural ground and each ground type, suggest a method to cooperate with the other landscape and linear infiltration system. Through this study, we came to recognize a recognition difference of an expert and a commoner about decentralized rainwater management.
To analyze changes in the water-balance before and after using decentralized rainwater management facilities, this study carried out hydrologic modeling based on data including roof planting, rainwater use, infiltration and detention facilities applied to the sites. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the total runoff quantity after facility installation was about 24% less than before. In particular, it showed that the surface runoff declined significantly. Second, the analysis of the effects of different decentralized rainwater management facilities revealed that the rooftop planting contributed to about a 3.5 times increase in actual evaporation than before. Third, the analysis of the effect of decentralized management facilities by different rainfall events showed that it turned to have about a 30% decreasing effect after facility installation for a monthly rainfall over 500mm or so and about 50% declining effect for a monthly rainfall about 200mm. As discussed above, the study confirmed that it is important to implement decentralized rainwater management facilities to improve inevitable changes in water-balance arising from development as it would be a significant alternative for sustainable urban development.
To manage rainwater environmentally friendly, it is necessary to let the rainwater be infiltrated naturally and make reservoirs to detain it in the chosen spot. Not only should it be prepared to handle the city flood, but also it be a necessary alternative for establishing the ecological water circular system in cities. Therefore, considering the present rainwater. management system, this study analysed the status of products which can be interchanged from existent systems to rainwater infiltrating systems. In this study, the infiltrating equipment that is applicable to the Korean drainage system was developed. The case was studied out to investigate the effects of infiltrating and the detaining ability of the developed product. The case site, block 6 of Sang-am residence, was selected and analyzed. The amount of infiltration and detention per unit of the introduced facilities, i.e., infiltrating pipes and tanks were calculated. In this research, the amount of each infiltrating tank was revealed to be 1.353 m/hr and the amount of detention as 0.299 m/hr. And the amount of each infiltrating pipe was found to be 0.541 m/hr and the amount of detention was 0.118 m/hr. To examine the effects of the system, the total amount of the outlet before and after installing was compared and calculated. In doing this, a basis for deciding the arrangement and number of tanks and pipes of the infiltrating system was made.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the number and influence factors of asbestos fibers in the air of farmhouses with asbestos cement slate roofing, as well as in rainwater per unit area of the asbestos cement slate roofing. Methods: At a distance of 1 m from the end of asbestos cement slate roofing in 20 farmhouses, the asbestos fiber in the air was collected three times on a clear day downwind from the prevailing wind. Rainwater falling from the slate roofing was collected four times with a 1.05-m rainwater pipe on a rainy day at the 20 farmhouses, filtered with a MCE filter, and analyzed with a phase contrast microscope. Results: The geometric mean of the number of asbestos fibers in the air of farmhouses with slate roofing was 0.11 fiber/L, and no samples exceeded the recommended standard of 10 fiber/L. As a result of multiple regression analysis, a factor which gave a significant influence to the asbestos fiber content in the air was the gross area of slate roofing at the target farmhouses. The number of asbestos fibers included in rainwater collected per 1 m2 of slate roofing was 1,753 fiber/$L{\cdot}m2$. As a result of multiple regression analysis, the number of asbestos fibers contained in rainwater per 1 m2 of slate showed a significantly higher tendency as the year of slate roofing installation at the target farmhouses receded. Conclusions: It was confirmed for the first time in Korea that asbestos from asbestos cement slate roofing scatters into the air.
Vietnam is a developing country with the rate around 5%-6% per year, especially in urban areas. Rapidly developed urban areas lead to stress for infrastructure and the water supply is also stressed. In Hanoi city, total water capacity from the manufactories is around one million cubic meters per day and almost the entire main water source is groundwater but it is not enough to supply all of Hanoi's people, especially in the summer. A demo project is implemented in Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE) to produce drinking water by using the rainwater and membrane system and supply for people. In this project, rainwater is collected on the rooftop of the lecture building with an area of around $500m^2$ and $100m^3$ volumetric rainwater tanks. Afterwards, the rainwater is treated by the micro-membrane system and supplied to the tap water. Total cost for construction, technology and operation in the first year is around USD 48,558. In the long-term (15 yr) if HUCE invests in the same system, with $20m^3$ volumetric storage tank, it can provide drinking water for 500 staffs in every year. The cost of investment and operation for this system is lower than 30% compared to buying bottled water with the price USD 1.8/bottle. The drinking water parameters after treatment are pH, 7.3-7.75; turbidity, 0.6-0.8 NUT; total dissolved solids, 60-89 mg/L; coliform, 0; heavy metal similar with water quality in the bottle water in Vietnam.
Rainwater was collected in Seoul area from January 1991 to December 1993 (over 3years) and by the analysis of the chemical components contained in rainwater, investigated the components that effect on rainwater pH Through the above studies the following conclusions were obtained. 1) Method for Averaging pH Volume weighted method is considered to be acceptable providing that precipitation is measured at the same time when the samples are taken, without precipitation data a simple averaging method should be the next choice. 2) Annual average rainwater pH was 4.98 in 1991, 4.80 in 1992, 4.67 in 1993, measurement range was 3.6-8.1. 3) In the relationship between rainwater pH and rainfall amounts rainwater pH for light rain(<15mm rainfall) was existent in the wide range(pH 4-7), but for heavy rain was corresponded to the annual average values. 4) Annual frequency of pH was Birrndat the frequency($\gamma $) between the density of the [$H^{+}$] and pH in the rainwater(over 3years ), $NO_{3}^{-}$ was excellent and the obtained results was 0.62 in 1992. Also In the correlation coefficient($\gamma $) according to the pH range $SO_{4}^{2-}, NO_{3}^{-}$, were 0.85 ,0.68 at 3.6 $Cl^-$ was 0.99(1993). At 4.1$NO_{3}^{-}(\gamma=0.48)$ in 1992, SO_4^{2-}($\gamma$=0.54), $NO_{3}^{-}(\gamma$=0.72), $Cl^- (\gamma$=0.49) in 1993. 6) pH values gradually increased with increase in $Ca^{2+}/SO_{4}^{2-}$.

This paper describes the concentrations of total dissolved iron (tFe) and $Fe^{2+}$ in rainwater and snow, the relationship of Fe species with other metals and ions in bulk rainwater, and the $Fe^{2+}$ generation mechanism in aqueous samples in rainwater of time series collection. Volume weight mean concentrations of tFe and $Fe^{2+}$ were 3.22 and $1.25{\mu}gL^{-1}$ in bulk rainwater, and 50.1 and $43.5{\mu}gL^{-1}$ in snow, respectively. $Fe^{2+}$ was significant fraction to the tFe, accounted for 3.25-93.4% of the tFe in rainwater and 87% in snow. We also investigated temporal variations of tFe, $Fe^{2+}$, other metals and ions in rainwater of time series collection during rain event. Although the concentration range of tFe was different from those of other species, a decreasing trend of tFe from the beginning of the rain event was similar with other species. However, though $Fe^{2+}$ did not show such a decreasing trend, $Fe^{2+}$/tFe was in good correlation with solar radiation. From the results of multiple linear regression analysis and thermodynamic calculations (Mineql+), $Fe^{2+}$ in our samples may be generated from photochemical reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ species (such as $Fe(OH)^{2+}$,$Fe(OH)^{2+}$ and Fe-oxalate) at daytime.
