The Effect of Roofing Materials for Using Harvested Rainwater (집수빗물이용을 위한 지붕면 재질의 영향)

  • The objective was to evaluate the quality of harvested rainwater of the roofing materials used and the presence of lichens/mosses on the roofing surface. This experiment was studied in the field where five pilot structures with different roofing materials (i.e., wooden shingle tiles, wooden shingle tiles (including mosses), concrete tiles, clay tiles [Gi-Wa] and slate tiles) were installed. As a result, the clay tiles [Gi-Wa] was found to be the most suitable for rainwater harvesting applications. It was due to the disinfection from ultraviolet light and high temperature according to characteristic of roofing materials. Comparison with quality of rainwater on that wooden shingle tiles with and without including mosses, which may affect the concentration of and wooden shingle tiles including mosses, mosses may affect concentration of TOC, nitrate, and sulfate. Additionally, the average concentration of asbestos was determined to be measured at $0.002/cm^3$ for the slate tiles. The value satisfied with it met the Ministry of Environment's Multi-use facility standard and Ministry of Labor's Office standard ($0.01/cm^3$).

Chemical Properties and Nutrient Loadings of Rainwater during Farming Season (영농기 강우의 화학적 특성 및 부하량 평가)

  • Acid rain and its problem to environment such as acid precipitation and environmental problems related to the air pollution in East Asia has been emerging. To evaluate the acidity and chemical characteristics of rainwater precipitated in western Korea, Suwon and Taean, its pH and ion concentrations were investigated during farming season (April to November) in 2009. Also, ion composition and cation-affected neutralization were determined to evaluate the contribution of cations on the acidity of rainwater. Ion and electrical conductivity between the measured and the estimated showed high correlation. The $Na^+$ in rainwater was the main cation followed by ${NH_4}^+>Ca^{2+}>H^+>Mg^{2+}>K^+$. Sum of $Na^+$ and ${NH_4}^+$ contents was over 65% of total cations contents. In the case of anions, the concentration was in order of ${SO_4}^{2-}>{NO_3}^->Cl^-$. The ${SO_4}^{2-}$ among anions in rainwater composed about 61%, which showed on average 130.2 ${\mu}eq\;L^{-1}$ and 121.3 ${\mu}eq\;L^{-1}$ during monitoring at Suwon and Taean, respectively. Also, 89.6 and 88.6% of soluble sulfate in rainwater at Suwon and Taean area was NSS-${SO_4}^{2-}$ (Non-Sea Salt sulfate). Especially, ${NH_4}^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ contributed greatly in neutralizing the acid rain in dry season. Total nitrogen content flowed into soil from rain was around 1~2 kg $ha^{-1}$ in each month, but in July at Suwon, it reached 6 kg $ha^{-1}$ due to heavy rain (over 7.3 mm).

  • In urban areas, the impermeable area continues to increase due to urbanization, which interferes with the surface penetrating and infiltrating of rainwater, causing most rainwater runoff to the surface, deepening the distortion of water circulation. Distortion of water circulation affects not only flood disasters caused by rainfall and runoff, but also various aspects such as dry stream phenomenon, deterioration of water quality, and destruction of ecosystem balance, and the Ministry of Environment strongly recommends the use of Low Impact development (LID) techniques. In order to apply the LID technique, it is necessary to set a rainwater management target to handle the increase in outflow after the development of the target site, and the current standard sets the rainwater management target using the 10-year daily rainfall. In this study, the difference from the current standards was analyzed through statistical analysis and classification of independent rainfall ideas using inter-event time definition (IETD) in setting the target amount of rainwater management to improve water circulation. Using 30-year rainfall data from 1991 to 2020, methods such as autocorrelation coefficient (AC) analysis, variation coefficient (VC) analysis, and annual average number of rainfall event (NRE) analysis were applied, and IETD was selected according to the target rainfall period. The more samples the population had, the more IETD tended to increase. In addition, by analyzing the duration and time distribution of independent rainfall according to the IETD, a plan was proposed to calculate the standard design rainfall according to the rainwater management target amount. Therefore, it is expected that it will be possible to set an improved rainwater management target amount if sufficient samples of independent rainfall ideas are used through the selection of IETD as in this study.

Scavenging Properties of Atmospheric Carbon by Precipitation

  • In order to investigate the scavenging property of airborne carbonaceous particles by precipitations, rainwater, snow sample, and total suspended particulate matter (TSP) were collected at a heavily industrialized urban site. Elemental carbon (EC) contents of both rainwater and snow water were deter-mined using elemental analysis system. EC concentrations in rain samples varied from 33.6 to 166.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ with an average 47.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ . On the other hand, those of snow samples in three times snow events were ranged from 122.4 to 293.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ . As might be expected, EC showed the significantly high scavenging rate at the initial rainfall. The average total carbon (TC) scavenging rate by washout mechanisms was 57.6% for five rainfall events. The scavenging rate of EC gradually increased in proportion to the increasing rainfall intensity and rainfall amount.

  • This study is to develop a distributed urban flood runoff model that simulates the road runoff and to test the applicability of the model by applying to Pyeongtaek city of $12.2km^2$. To generate the runoff along the runoff, agree burned DEM (Digital Elevation Model) with road networks was suggested and the proper spatial resolution of DEM was identified finer than 15 m. To test the model applicability, 32 points on the road networks were selected and the hydrographs of each point were generated. The test showed reasonable results that increase the road runoff from the high elevation roads to the low elevation roads and the road runoff considering rainwater drainage from the road also showed reasonable results.
