Rainfall data from three different types of rain gauge system have been collected for the summertime rain event at Mokpo in the Korean peninsula. The rain gauge system considered in this paper is composed of three tipping-bucket rain gauges with 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 mm measuring resolutions, the Optical Rain Gauge (ORG), and the PARSIVEL (PARticle SIze and VELocity). The PARSIVEL rainfall rate has been considered as the reference for comparison since it gave good resolution and performance on this event. Comparison with the PARSIVEL rainfall rate gives the results that the error and temporal variation of rainfall rate are simultaneously reduced with increasing the averaging interval of rainfall rate or decreasing the size of tipping bucket. This suggests that the estimated rainfall rate must be optimized, differently for the type of tipping-bucket rain gages, by minimizing the averaging interval of rainfall rate under the condition satisfying the given performance of rainfall rate.

In recent, the rainfall is showing different properties in space and time but the ground rain gauge only can observe rainfall at a point. This means the ground rain gauge has the limitations in spatial and temporal resolutions to measure rainfall and so there is a need to utilize radar rainfall which can consider spatial distribution of rainfall This study tried to apply radar rainfall for runoff simulation on an urban drainage system. The study area is Guro-gu, Seoul and we divided study area into subbasins based on rain gauge network of AWS(Automatic Weather station). Then the radar rainfalls were adjusted using rainfall data of rain gauge stations the areal rainfalls were obtained. The runoffs were simulated by using XP-SWMM model in subbasins of an urban drainage system. As the results, the adjusted radar rainfalls were underestimated in the range of 60 to 95% of rain gauge rainfalls and so the simulated runoffs from the adjusted radar and gauge rainfalls also showed the differences. The runoff peak time from radar rainfall was occurred more fast than that from gauge rainfall.

Recently, As the frequency of localized heavy rains increases, the use of high-resolution radar data is increasing. The produced radar rainfall has still gaps of spatial and temporal compared to gauge observation rainfall, and in many studies, various statistical techniques are performed for correct rainfall. In this study, the precipitation correction of the S-band Dual Polarization radar in use in the flood forecast was performed using the ConvAE algorithm, one of the Convolutional Neural Network. The ConvAE model was trained based on radar data sets having a 10-min temporal resolution: radar rainfall data, gauge rainfall data for 790minutes(July 2017 in Cheongju flood event). As a result of the validation of corrected radar rainfall were reduced gaps compared to gauge rainfall and the spatial correction was also performed. Therefore, it is judged that the corrected radar rainfall using ConvAE will increase the reliability of the gridded rainfall data used in various physically-based distributed hydrodynamic models.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate how the rainfall field effect on a runoff simulation using grid radar rainfall data and ground gauge rainfall. The Gwangdeoksan radar and ground-gauge rainfall data were used to estimate a spatial rainfall field, and a hydrologic model was used to evaluate whether the rainfall fields created by each method reproduced a realistically valid spatial and temporal distribution. Pilot basin in this paper was the Naerin stream located in Inje-gun, Gangwondo, 250m grid scale digital elevation data, land cover maps, and soil maps were used to estimate geological parameters for the hydrologic model. For the rainfall input data, quantitative precipitation estimation(QPE), adjusted radar rainfall, and gauge rainfall was used, and then compared with the observed runoff by inputting it into a $Vflo^{TM}$ model. As a result of the simulation, the quantitative precipitation estimation and the ground rainfall were underestimated when compared to the observed runoff, while the adjusted radar rainfall showed a similar runoff simulation with the actual observed runoff. From these results, we suggested that when weather radars and ground rainfall data are combined, they have a greater hydrological usability as input data for a hydrological model than when just radar rainfall or ground rainfall is used separately.

This study was to introduced estimation model for optimum probabilistic rainfall intensity on hydrological area. Originally, probabilistic rainfall intensity formula have been characterized different coefficient of formula and model following watersheds. But recently in korea rainfall intensity formula does not use unionize applyment standard between administration and district. And mingle use planning formula with not assumption model. Following the number of year hydrological duration adjust areal index. But, with adjusting formula applyment was without systematic conduct. This study perceive the point as following : 1) Use method of excess probability of Iwai to calculate survey rainfall intensity value. 2) And, use method of least squares to calculate areal coefficient for a unit of 157 rain gauge station. And, use areal coefficient was introduced new probabilistic rainfall intensity formula for each rain gauge station. 3) And, use new probabilistic rainfall intensity formula to adjust a unit of fourteen duration-a unit of fifteen year probabilistic rainfall intensity. 4) The above survey value compared with adjustment value. And use three theory of error(absolute mean error, squares mean error, relative error ratio) to choice optimum probabilistic rainfall intensity formula for a unit of 157 rain gauge station.
Today they use a weather radar with spatially high resolution in predicting rainfall intensity and utilizing the information for super short-range forecast in order to make predictions of such severe meteorological phenomena as heavy rainfall and snow. For a weather radar, they use the Z-R relation between the reflectivity factor(Z) and rainfall intensity(R) by rainfall particles in the atmosphere in order to estimate intensity. Most used among the various Z-R relation is $Z=200R^{1.6}$ applied to stratiform rain. It's also used to estimate basic rainfall intensity of a weather radar run by the weather center. This study set out to compare rainfall intensity between the reflectivity of a weather radar and the ground rainfall of ASOS(Automatic Surface Observation System) by analyzing many different cases of heavy rain, analyze the errors of different weather radars and identify their problems, and investigate their applicability to nowcasting in case of severe weather.
This study evaluated the effect of combined rainfall observation of using rain gauge and rain radar. The effect of combined observations is to be evaluated by considering the decrease of measurement error due to combined use of design orthogonal observation methods. As an example, this study evaluated the rain gauge network of the Keum river basin, and showed how the density of rain gauges could be decreased by combining the radar observation. This study applied the researches on sampling error by North and Nakamoto(1989), Yoo et al. (1996) and Yoo (1997), also the simple NFD model for representing the rainfall field. The model parameters were decided using the rainfall characteristics (correlation time and length) estimated using the data collected in the Keum River Basin by 28 rain gauges and the operation rule of radar was assumed arbitrarily. This study considered the rain gauge density criteria provided by WMO(1994) and the rain gauge density installed in the Keum river basin to decrease the rain gauge density under the condition of introducing the radar.
This study evaluated the effect of zero measurements of rainfall on the spatial correlation structure using the mixed distribution function. Three cases of data structures were considered at two gauge stations: only the positive measurements at both stations, the positive measurements at either one or both stations, and all the measurements including zero measurement at both stations. Also the rainfall data were categorized into the frontal, typhoon, and convective for their comparison. Hourly rainfall data from 12 rain gauge stations within the Geum river basin were analyzed to find that the rain gauge density of WMO to be good for the frontal and typhoon, but not enough for the convective storms.
This study estimated the urbanization effect of Seoul, the largest city in Korea, on its rainfall. For a comparative analysis, two different data sets are used: One is the precipitation data at the Jeonju rain gauge station, which has a relatively long record length but least urbanization effect, and the other at the Ichon rain gauge station, which has a short record length but located very near to Seoul with least urbanization effect. Also, the difference of the rainfall between Seoul and Jeonju rain gauge stations, as an indicator of urbanization effect, is quantified by use of the intervention model. As a result, it was found that the maximum rainfall intensity of the annual maximum rainfall events shows the increasing trend, its duration the decreasing trend, and the mean intensity the decreasing trend especially after 1960. Also, the quantification of urbanization effect using the intervention model shows that the increasing trend of rainfall intensity and total volume is still on going.
In order to predict and prevent hydrological disasters such as flood, it is necessary to accurately estimate rainfall. In this paper, an areal average rainfall estimation method using multiple elevation observation data of an electromagnetic wave rain gauge is presented. The small electromagnetic rain gauge system is a very small precipitation radar that operates at K-band with dual-polarization technology for very short distance observation. The areal average rainfall estimation method is based on the assumption that the variation in rainfall over the observation range is small because the observation distance and time are very short. The proposed method has been evaluated by comparing with ground instruments such as tipping-bucket rain gauges and a Parsivel. The evaluation results show that the methodology works fairly well for the rainfall events which are shown here.
