  • The objective of this study is to provide systematic design of the Korea's highway advisory radio system in intelligent transport systems. Highway advisory radio services support safety driving and traffic information for travellers, and rapid response of the system for emergency status not only dissemination of traffic for traffic but also flood, heavy snowfall, falling rocks, closed-road, collapse, accident and so on. Therefore, highway advisory radio service contributes national highway safety management system to the voice of the nation of user-centered traffic information service.

  • This paper discusses QoS enhancement in the Best-effort services of the service plan provided by MPEG Media Transport (MMT) systems for video streaming applications. Among MMT services, i.e. per-flow, per-class, and best-effort services, the server does not provide guaranteed bandwidth for the best-effort service only. Therefore, in the best-effort services, a bandwidth access priority is defined for various services, where the lowest priority is assigned to the low-level video services. To alleviate the issue of bandwidth limitation in the best-effort services, this paper investigates transmission of low-resolution video with low bitrate and up-sampling. Our experimental results prove the superiority of the proposed method in terms of delivered video quality.

  • It is the content and scope of this study to analyze the problems of the current wireless service and the classification system of the radio station, and to examine the case of radio control in Japan and to establish a reasonable and efficient radio wave management plan. The results of this study can be used as basic data for reorganizing the legislation on radio wave enforcement ordinance, radio services and radio station classification standards. It is expected that it will be possible to improve the compliance and efficiency of the radio station licensing and inspection service while enhancing the policy compliance in the practical work by providing detailed explanations on the definition and classification system of the new radio task / radio station in the future.

  • Spectrum scarcity seems to be the most challenging issue to be solved in new wireless telecommunication services. It is shown that spectrum unavailability is mainly due to spectrum inefficient utilization and inappropriate physical layer execution rather than spectrum shortage. Daily increasing demand for new wireless services with higher data rate and QoS level makes the upgrade of the physical layer modulation techniques inevitable. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) which utilizes multicarrier modulation to provide higher data rates with the capability of flexible resource allocation, although has widely been used in current wireless systems and standards, seems not to be the best candidate for cognitive radio systems. Filter Bank based Multi-Carrier (FBMC) is an evolutionary scheme with some advantages over the widely-used OFDM multicarrier technique. In this paper, we focus on the total throughput improvement of a cognitive radio network using FBMC modulation. Along with this modulation scheme, we propose a novel uplink radio resource allocation algorithm in which fairness issue is also considered. Moreover, the average throughput of the proposed FBMC based cognitive radio is compared to a conventional OFDM system in order to illustrate the efficiency of using FBMC in future cognitive radio systems. Simulation results show that in comparison with the state of the art two algorithms (namely, Shaat and Wang) our proposed algorithm achieves higher throughputs and a better fairness for cognitive radio applications.

  • Radio interference has been occurring in mobile communication services on the southern seashore in Korea. Monitoring the radio interference signal revealed that the main reason for the radio interference was a radio ducting signal coming from the seaside of Japan. In this paper, we have analyzed the effect of interference on WiMAX service using a 2.5 GHz frequency band between Korea and Japan. We focus on the interference scenario from base station to base station and we use the Minimum Coupling Loss (MCL) method for interference analysis and the Advanced Propagation Model (APM) for calculating the propagation loss in ducts. The propagation model is also compared with experimental measurement data. We confirm that the interfering signal strength depends on the antenna height and this result can be applied to deployment planning for each system with an interference impact acceptable to both parties.

  • In order to assess the spectrum usage efficiency in mobile radio services, we consider the capacity limits of a CDMA system. The maximum achievable capacity per $km^2$ is viewed as a meaningful figure of merit for a cellular system and a method is proposed here to estimate the minimum achievable distance between adjacent base stations in the case of CDMA. The probability for entering in soft handover state is used as a limit for densification in a CDMA system. From this criterion, conditions on the minimum possible cell radius are derived.

  • In this paper, we propose the technical considerations for the rules on television white space(TVWS), that becomes a center of public notice, in terms of incumbent services protection, technical requirements of television band devices (TVBDs) and administration of TV band databases. The basic idea behind the proposed method is based on the perfect protection of incumbent services such as digital television and wireless microphone. It has been found that FCC's approach has the advantage that a list of available channels and transmission power are provided for TVBDs faster than Ofcom's approach that requires DB to perform the algorithm for determining frequencies and transmission power for TVBDs everytime DB is asked from TVBDs.

  • In this paper, we present a frequency reassignment problem (FRP) that arises when we install new base stations or reconfigure radio networks to increase the capacity or to expand service area. For this problem, we develop an integer programming (IP) model, and develop cutting planes to enhance the mathematical representation of the model. Also, we devise an effective tabu search algorithm to obtain tight upper bounds within reasonable time bounds. Computational results exhibit that the developed cutting planes are effective for reducing the computing time as well as for increasing lower bounds. Also, the proposed tabu search algorithm finds a feasible solution of good quality within reasonable time bound.

  • In this paper, we present a frequency reassignment problem (FRP) arising from the reconfiguration of radio networks such as adding new base stations (BSs) and changing the number of frequencies assigned to BSs. For this problem, we develop an integer programming (IP) model that minimizes the sum of frequency reassignment cost and the cost for unsatisfied frequency demands, while avoiding interference among frequencies. To obtain tight lower bounds, we develop some valid inequalities and devise an objective function relaxation scheme. Also, we develop a simple but efficient heuristic procedure to solve large size problems. Computational results show that the developed valid inequalities are effective for improving lower bounds. Also, the proposed tabu search heuristic finds tight upper bounds with average optimality gap of 2.3%.
