  • The radiation patterns and impedance of the half wave solt on the wide side of rectangular wave guide are analyzed. The measuring methods and procedures are described. And that the experimental data of the pattern and impedance of the slot are presented which are consistent with the theoretical values. The causes of error are also considered and are believed to be tolerable for the pattern and input impedance measurements. The usefulness of the slot antenna tested are also described.

Development and Evaluation of the Utility of a Respiratory Monitoring and Visual Feedback System for Radiotherapy Using Machine Vision Technology

  • Background: We developed a machine vision technology program that tracks patients' real-time breathing and automatically analyzes their breathing patterns. Materials and Methods: To evaluate its potential for clinical application, the image tracking performance and accuracy of the program were analyzed using a respiratory motion phantom. Changes in the stability and regularity of breathing were observed in healthy adult volunteers according to whether the breathing pattern mirrored the breathing guidance. Results and Discussion: Displacement within a few millimeters was observed in real-time with a clear resolution, and the image tracking ability was excellent. This result was consistent even in the sections where breathing patterns changed rapidly. In addition, the respiratory gating method that reflected the individual breathing patterns improved breathing stability and regularity in all volunteers. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that this technology can be used to set the appropriate window and the range of internal target volume by reflecting the patient's breathing pattern during radiotherapy planning. However, further studies in clinical populations are required to validate this technology.

계란 ovomucoid의 탄수화물 부분에 미치는 이온화방사선의 영향 (Ionizing Radiation Effect on the Carbohydrate Moiety of Chicken Ovomucoid)

  • 계란 흰자내에 존재하면서 전형적인 알레르기원이며 단백질분해효소 저해물질인 ovomucoid의 탄수화물 곁사슬에 대한 방사선의 조사효과를 관찰하였다. Trypsin 저해 활성은 방사선 조사선량의 증가에 따라 급격히 손실되었는데 질소환경과 비교하였을 때, 산소환경에서 방사선 조사한 경우 ovomucoid의 불활성화가 현저히 보호되었다. Protein blotting 결과 산소환경에서 방사선을 조사한 경우는 단백질이 일부 파괴되었고, 질소환경하에서는 단백질 응집 현상이 일어났다. Carbohydrate blotting 결과로 나타난 밴드의 위치 및 형태 역시 protein blotting 결과와 유사하였다 HPLC 분석 결과 조사선량의 증가에 따라 모든 올리고당 분획이 감소하는 경향을 보였는데 산소환경하에서 더욱 현저하였다. 위의 결과로 보아, 방사선에 의해서 탄수화물 곁사슬의 파괴 및 유리로 인한 전반적인 구조적 변화가 초래되어 ovomucoid의 활성도 변화를 좌우한 것으로 생각된다.

Gene Expression Patterns of Spleen, Lung and Brain with Different Radiosensitivity in C57BL6 Mice

  • Although little information is available on the underlying mechanisms, various genetic factors have been associated with tissue-specific responses to radiation. In the present study, we explored the possibility whether organ specific gene expression is associated with radiosensitivity using samples from brain, lung and spleen. We examined intrinsic expression pattern of 23 genes in the organs by semi-quantitative RT-PCR method using both male and female C57BL/6 mice. Expression of p53 and p21, well known factors for governing sensitivity to radiation or chemotherapeutic agents, was not different among the organ types. Both higher expression of sialyltransferase, delta7-sterol reductase, leptin receptor splice variant form 12.1, and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lower expression of alphaB crystalline were specific for spleen tissue. Expression level of glutathione peroxidase and APO-1 cell surface antigen gene in lung tissue was high, while that of Na, K-ATPase alpha-subunit, Cu/ZnSOD, and cyclin G was low. Brain, radioresistant organ, showed higher expressions of Na, K-ATPase-subunit, cyclin G, and nucleolar protein hNop56 and lower expression of delta7-sterol reductase. The result revealed a potential correlation between gene expression patterns and organ sensitivity, and Identified genes which might be responsible for organ sensitivity.

Patterns of recurrence after radiation therapy for high-risk neuroblastoma

  • Purpose: To investigate the patterns of recurrence in patients with neuroblastoma treated with radiation therapy to the primary tumor site. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with high-risk neuroblastoma managed with definitive treatment with radiation therapy to the primary tumor site between January 2003 and June 2017. These patients underwent three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy or intensity-modulated radiation therapy. A total of 14-36 Gy was delivered to the planning target volume, which included the primary tumor bed and the selected metastatic site. The disease stage was determined according to the International Neuroblastoma Staging System (INSS). We evaluated the recurrence pattern (i.e., local or systemic), progression-free survival, and overall survival. Results: A total of 40 patients with high-risk neuroblastoma were included in this study. The median patient age was 4 years (range, 1 to 11 years). Thirty patients (75%) had INSS stage 4 neuroblastoma. At the median follow-up of 58 months, there were 6 cases of local recurrence and 10 cases of systemic recurrence. Among the 6 local failure cases, 4 relapsed adjacent to the radiation field. The other 2 relapsed in the radiation field (i.e., para-aortic and retroperitoneal areas). The main sites of distant metastasis were the bone, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. The 5-year progression-free survival was 70.9% and the 5-year overall survival was 74.3%. Conclusion: Radiation therapy directed at the primary tumor site provides good local control. It seems to be adequate for disease control in patients with high-risk neuroblastoma after chemotherapy and surgical resection.

벡터 적분법과 준 광학모드에 의한 밀리미터파용 컬러게이트 혼 안테나의 복사패턴 해석 (Analysis of the Radiation Patterns for a Millimeter Wave Corrugated Horn Antenna by Vector Integral Method and Quasi-Optics)

  • 컬러게이트 혼 안테나의 이론적 복사패턴을 벡터적분법과 준 광학모드 이론으로써 각각 구하였다. 혼 개구면에 존재하는 하이브리드 모드의 전자계를 등가 전류원으로 대체하고 포텐셜 이론을 적용하는 벡터 적분법으로 안테나의 복사 전계식을 계산 하였다. 또한, 준 광학모드인 Gaussian-Laguerre 모드를 확장하여 복사 관력식을 유도하였다. 85-115GHz에서 동작하는 컬러게이트 혼 안테나에 대한 복사패턴을 벡터적분법 및 준 광학방법으로 계산하고 비교한 결과 중심 주파수인 100GHz에서는 거의 일치하였으나 85 및 115GHz에서는 다소의 오차가 발생하였다.

Patterns of initial failure after resection for gallbladder cancer: implications for adjuvant radiotherapy

  • Purpose: This study sought to identify potential candidates for adjuvant radiotherapy and patterns of regional failure in patients who underwent curative-intent surgery for gallbladder cancer. Materials and Methods: Records for 70 patients with gallbladder cancer who underwent curative resection at a single institution between 2000 and 2016 were analysed retrospectively. No patients received adjuvant radiotherapy. Initial patterns of failure were evaluated. Regional recurrence was categorized according to the definitions of lymph node stations suggested by the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery. Results: Median follow-up was 23 months. Locoregional recurrence as any component of first failure occurred in 29 patients (41.4%), with isolated locoregional recurrence in 13 (18.6%). Regional recurrence occurred in 23 patients, and 77 regional recurrences were identified. Commonly involved regional stations were #13, #12a2, #12p2, #12b2, #16a2, #16b1, #9, and #8. Independent prognostic factors for locoregional recurrence were ${\geq}pT2$ disease (hazard ratio [HR], 5.510; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.260-24.094; p = 0.023) and R1 resection (HR, 6.981; 95% CI, 2.378-20.491; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Patients with pT2 disease or R1 resection after curative surgery for gallbladder cancer may benefit from adjuvant radiotherapy. Our findings on regional recurrence may help physicians construct a target volume for adjuvant radiotherapy.

Development of de-noised image reconstruction technique using Convolutional AutoEncoder for fast monitoring of fuel assemblies

  • The International Atomic Energy Agency has developed a tomographic imaging system for accomplishing the total fuel rod-by-rod verification time of fuel assemblies within the order of 1-2 h, however, there are still limitations for some fuel types. The aim of this study is to develop a deep learning-based denoising process resulting in increasing the tomographic image acquisition speed of fuel assembly compared to the conventional techniques. Convolutional AutoEncoder (CAE) was employed for denoising the low-quality images reconstructed by filtered back-projection (FBP) algorithm. The image data set was constructed by the Monte Carlo method with the FBP and ground truth (GT) images for 511 patterns of missing fuel rods. The de-noising performance of the CAE model was evaluated by comparing the pixel-by-pixel subtracted images between the GT and FBP images and the GT and CAE images; the average differences of the pixel values for the sample image 1, 2, and 3 were 7.7%, 28.0% and 44.7% for the FBP images, and 0.5%, 1.4% and 1.9% for the predicted image, respectively. Even for the FBP images not discriminable the source patterns, the CAE model could successfully estimate the patterns similarly with the GT image.

Design of an Internal Antenna with Near-Omnidirectional H-Plane Radiation Pattern over Ultra-wide Bandwidth

  • In this paper, an ultra-wideband internal antenna for use in mobile applications is proposed. The proposed antenna has symmetrical bi-arm structures printed on the top and bottom of the substrate, and it occupies a compact area of 10 mm ${\times}$ 10 mm ${\times}$ 1 mm. The designed antenna has an impedance bandwidth from 3 GHz to 12 GHz and near omnidirectional radiation patterns over the frequency band of interest. The group delay between two antennas fabricated using the proposed design is less than 0.8 ns, and the maximum gain variation is about 3.16 dB.

Design of a Biconical Antenna with Cylindrical Loads for EMI Test Site Validation above 1 GHz

  • In this paper, a biconical type antenna is proposed for EMI test site validation above 1 GHz. To achieve broadband and omni-directional radiation patterns required by international standard(CISPR), the proposed antenna consists of general bicones with cylindrical loads and adopts side feeding method to minimize the influence on H-plane pattern due to feeding cable, balun, and connector. The radiation patterns of the fabricated antenna are measured and the results are compared with CISPR criteria and commercial antenna in our interest frequencies. Although the proposed antenna has a few problems in frequency range of 1 GHz to 2 GHz, it has relatively better performance than commercial antenna.
