  • Currently, most automobiles have automatic transmission systems. The gear-shifting strategy used to generate shift patterns in transmission systems plays an important role in improving the performance of vehicles. However, conventional transmission systems have a fixed type of shift map, so it may not be enough to provide an efficient gear-shifting pattern to satisfy the demands of driver. In this study, we developed an intelligent strategy to handle these problems. This approach is based on a normalized radial basis function neural network, which can generate a flexible gear-shift pattern to satisfy the demands of drivers, including comfortable travel and fuel consumption. The method was verified through simulations.

  • In this study, we present a training method of radial basis function networks based on recursive modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm for single step prediction of chaotic time series. With single step predictions of Mackey-Glass time series and alpha-rhythm EEG which has chaotic characteristics, the radial basis function network trained by this method is compared with one trained by a classical non-recursive method and the radial basis function model proposed by X.D. He and A. Lapedes. The results show the effectiveness of the training method.

  • A major concern at present is the simultaneous control of transverse thickness profile and flatness in the finishing stages of hot rolling process. The mathematical modeling of hot rolling process has long been recognized to be a desirable approach to investigate rolling operating practice and the design of mill equipment to improve productivity and quality. However, many factors make the mathematical analysis of the rolling process very complex and time-consuming. In order to overcome these problems and to obtain an accurate rolling force, the predicted model of rolling force using neural networks has widely been employed. In this paper, Radial Basis Function Network(RBFN) is applied to improve the accuracy of rolling force prediction in hot rolling mill. In order to verify and analysis the performance of applied neural network, the comparison with the measured rolling force and the predicted results using two different neural networks - RBFN, MLP, has respectively been carried out. The results obtained using RBFN neural network are much more accurate those obtained the MLP.

  • Control of multi-link robot arms is a very difficult problem because of the highly nonlinear dynamics. Decentralized control scheme is developed for control of robot manipulators based on RBF(Radial Basis Function) Neural Networks. RBF Neural Networks is used to approximate the coupling forces among the joints, coriolis force, centrifugal force, gravitational force, and frictional force. The compensation controller is also proposed to estimate the bound of approximation error so that the chattering effect of the control effort can be reduced. The proposed scheme does not require an accurate manipulator dynamic, and it is proved that closed-loop system is asymptotic stable despite the gross robot parameter variations. Numerical simulations for two-link robot manipulator are included to show the effectiveness of controller.

  • In this paper, we propose the initial optimized structure of the Radial Basis function Networks that is simple in the part of the structure and fast converges more than neural networks with the analysis method using Time- Frequency Localization. We construct the hidden node with the Radial Basis functions their localization are similar with approximation target function in the plane of the Time and Frequency. We finally make a good decision of the initial structure for function approximation using genetic algorithm

  • In the recent years neural networks have fulfilled the promise of providing model-free learning controllers for nonlinear systems; however, it is very difficult to guarantee the stability and robustness of neural network control systems. This paper proposes an adaptive neural network control for robot manipulators based on the radial basis function netwo.k (RBFN). The RBFN is a branch of the neural networks and is mathematically tractable. So we adopt the RBFN to approximate nonlinear robot dynamics. The RBFN generates control input signals based on the Lyapunov stability that is often used in the conventional control schemes. The saturation function is also chosen as an auxiliary controller to guarantee the stability and robustness of the control system under the external disturbances and modeling uncertainties.

  • In this study, we introduce and discuss a concept of a granular-oriented radial basis function neural networks (GRBF NNs). In contrast to the typical architectures encountered in radial basis function neural networks(RBF NNs), our main objective is to develop a design strategy of GRBF NNs as follows : (a) The architecture of the network is fully reflective of the structure encountered in the training data which are granulated with the aid of clustering techniques. More specifically, the output space is granulated with use of K-Means clustering while the information granules in the multidimensional input space are formed by using a so-called context-based Fuzzy C-Means which takes into account the structure being already formed in the output space, (b) The innovative development facet of the network involves a dynamic reduction of dimensionality of the input space in which the information granules are formed in the subspace of the overall input space which is formed by selecting a suitable subset of input variables so that the this subspace retains the structure of the entire space. As this search is of combinatorial character, we use the technique of genetic optimization to determine the optimal input subspaces. A series of numeric studies exploiting some nonlinear process data and a dataset coming from the machine learning repository provide a detailed insight into the nature of the algorithm and its parameters as well as offer some comparative analysis.

  • In this paper, we introduce a design methodology of data-centroid Radial Basis Function neural networks with extended polynomial function. The two underlying design mechanisms of such networks involve K-means clustering method and Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO). The proposed algorithm is based on K-means clustering method for efficient processing of data and the optimization of model was carried out using PSO. In this paper, as the connection weight of RBF neural networks, we are able to use four types of polynomials such as simplified, linear, quadratic, and modified quadratic. Using K-means clustering, the center values of Gaussian function as activation function are selected. And the PSO-based RBF neural networks results in a structurally optimized structure and comes with a higher level of flexibility than the one encountered in the conventional RBF neural networks. The PSO-based design procedure being applied at each node of RBF neural networks leads to the selection of preferred parameters with specific local characteristics (such as the number of input variables, a specific set of input variables, and the distribution constant value in activation function) available within the RBF neural networks. To evaluate the performance of the proposed data-centroid RBF neural network with extended polynomial function, the model is experimented with using the nonlinear process data(2-Dimensional synthetic data and Mackey-Glass time series process data) and the Machine Learning dataset(NOx emission process data in gas turbine plant, Automobile Miles per Gallon(MPG) data, and Boston housing data). For the characteristic analysis of the given entire dataset with non-linearity as well as the efficient construction and evaluation of the dynamic network model, the partition of the given entire dataset distinguishes between two cases of Division I(training dataset and testing dataset) and Division II(training dataset, validation dataset, and testing dataset). A comparative analysis shows that the proposed RBF neural networks produces model with higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than other intelligent models presented previously.

  • An efficient and robust neural network-based scheme is introduced in this paper to perform automatic cloud detection. Unlike many existing cloud detection schemes which use thresholding and statistical methods, we used the artificial neural network methods, the multi-layer perceptrons (MLP) with back-propagation algorithm and radial basis function (RBF) networks for cloud detection from Geostationary satellite images. We have used a simple scene (a mixed scene containing only cloud and clear sky). The main results show that the neural networks are able to handle complex atmospheric and meteorological phenomena. The experimental results show that two methods performed well, obtaining a classification accuracy reaching over 90 percent. Moreover, the RBF model is the most effective method for the cloud classification.
