  • In this paper, we propose a new visual feature extraction method for content-based image retrieval(CBIR) based on wavelet transform which has both spatial-frequency characteristic and multi-resolution characteristic. We extract visual features for each frequency band in wavelet transformation and use them to CBIR. The lowest frequency band involves spacial information of original image. We extract L feature vectors using fuzzy homogeneity in the wavelet domain, which consider both the wavelet coefficients and the spacial information of each coefficient. Also, we extract 3 feature vectors wing the energy values of high frequency bands, and store those to image database. As a query, we retrieve the most similar image from image database according to the 10 largest homograms(normalized fuzzy homogeneity vectors) and 3 energy values. Simulation results show that the proposed method has good accuracy in image retrieval using 90 texture images.

  • In this paper we propose an efficient content-based image retrieval method using the color and wavelet based texture features. The color features are obtained from soft-color histograms of the global image and the wavelet-based texture features are obtained from the invariant moments of the high-pass sub-band through the spatial-frequency analysis of the wavelet transform. The proposed system, called a color and texture based two-step retrieval(CTBTR), is composed of two-step query operations for an efficient image retrieval. In the first-step matching operation, the color histogram features are used to filter out the dissimilar images quickly from a large image database. The second-step matching operation applies the wavelet based texture features to the retained set of images to retrieve all relevant images successfully. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields more improved retrieval accuracy with computationally efficiency than the previous methods.

  • There are two significant drawbacks in triple image indexing; one is that is cannot support concept-based image retrieval and the other is that it fails to allow disjunctive labeling of images. To remedy the drawbacks, we propose a new technique supporting a concept-based retrieval against images indexed by indefinite fuzzy triples (I-fuzzy triples). The I-fuzzy triples allow not only a disjunctive image labeling, but also a concept-based matching against images labeled disjunctively. The disjunctive labeling is based on the expended closed world assumption and the concept-based image retrieval is based on fuzzy matching. In this paper, we also propose a concept-based query evaluation against the image database to extract desired answers with the degree of certainty $\alpha$$\in$[1,0].

  • Typical image features such as color, shape, and texture are used in content based image retrieved. Retrieval which uses only one image feature has little performance in case that the content of image is complex or database contains many images. So, many approaches for integrating these features have been studied. However, the problem of these approaches is how to appropriately weight the image features at query time. In this paper, we propose a new retrieval method using automatically weighted image features. We perform computer simulations in test database which consists of various kinds of images. The experimental results show that the proposed method has better performance than previous works, which use fixed weight for each feature mostly, in respect to several performance cvaluations such as precision vs recall, retrieval efficiency, and ranking measure.

  • In this paper, a texture feature extraction method using local energy and local correlation of Gabor transformed images is proposed and applied to an image retrieval system. The Gabor wavelet is known to be similar to the response of the human visual system. The outputs of the Gabor transformation are robust to variants of object size and illumination. Due to such advantages, it has been actively studied in various fields such as image retrieval, classification, analysis, etc. In this paper, in order to fully exploit the superior aspects of Gabor wavelet, local energy and local correlation features are extracted from Gabor transformed images and then applied to an image retrieval system. Some experiments are conducted to compare the performance of the proposed method with those of the conventional Gabor method and the popular rotation-invariant uniform local binary pattern (RULBP) method in terms of precision vs recall. The Mahalanobis distance is used to measure the similarity between a query image and a database (DB) image. Experimental results for Corel DB and VisTex DB show that the proposed method is superior to the conventional Gabor method. The proposed method also yields precision and recall 6.58% and 3.66% higher on average in Corel DB, respectively, and 4.87% and 3.37% higher on average in VisTex DB, respectively, than the popular RULBP method.

  • Recently, there have been many indexing schemes for multimedia data such as image, video data. But recent database applications, for example data mining and multimedia database, are required to support multi-user environment. In order for indexing schemes to be useful in multi-user environment, a concurrency control algorithm is required to handle it. So we propose a concurrency control algorithm that can be applied to CBF (cell-based filtering method), which uses the signature of the cell for alleviating the dimensional curse problem. In addition, we extend the SHORE storage system of Wisconsin university in order to handle high-dimensional data. This extended SHORE storage system provides conventional storage manager functions, guarantees the integrity of high-dimensional data and is flexible to the large scale of feature vectors for preventing the usage of large main memory. Finally, we implement the web-based image retrieval system by using the extended SHORE storage system. The key feature of this system is platform-independent access to the high-dimensional data as well as functionality of efficient content-based queries. Lastly. We evaluate an average response time of point query, range query and k-nearest query in terms of the number of threads.

  • Topographical images, in case of aerial or satellite images, are usually similar in colors and textures, and complex in shapes. Thus we have to use shape features of images for efficiently retrieving a query image from topographical image databases. In this paper, we propose a shape feature extraction method which is suitable for topographical images. This method, which improves the existing projection in the Cartesian coordinates, performs the projection operation in the polar coordinates. This method extracts three attributes, namely the number of region pixels, the boundary pixel length of the region from the centroid, the number of alternations between region and background, along each angular direction of the polar coordinates. It extracts the features of complex shape objects which may have holes and disconnected regions. An advantage of our method is that it is invariant to rotation/scale/translation of images. Finally we show the advantages of our method through experiments by comparing it with CSS which is one of the most successful methods in the area of shape feature extraction

  • Place recognition for LBS (Location Based Service) has been one of the important techniques for user-oriented service. FLANN (Fast Library for performing Approximate Nearest Neighbor) of place recognition with image features is fast, but it is affected much by environmental condition such as occlusions. This paper presents a place recognition method using quad vocabulary tree with SURF (Speeded Up Robust Features). In learning stage, an image is represented with spatial pyramid of three levels and vocabulary trees of their sub-regions are constructed. Query image is matched with the learned vocabulary trees in each level. The proposed method measures homography error of the matched features. By considering the number of inliers in sub-region, we can improve place recognition performance.

  • This paper presents a new image retrieval system with color and morphological informations based on binary sets. Each of them can be obtained from color binary sets and regional segmentation separately. For retrieval processes, the candidate images are decided by comparing color and their image binary sets of the database with query images. Particularly, it is possible that the retrieval of similar-measurements has a weight of color spatial distribution and its objective morphological features. We proposed a new idea for performing simply the complicated similar-measurement of candidated images to improve queried processes. The retrieval method using spatial and morphological features is shown with the effectiveness on the result of implementation on database with 3,000 images.

  • This Paper suggests a new feature for shot detection, using the proposed robust feature from the DC image constructed by DCT DC coefficients in the MPEG video stream, and proposes the characterizing value that reflects the characteristic of kind of video (movie, drama, news, music video etc.). The key frames are pulled out from many frames by using the local minima and maxima of differential of the value. After original frame(not do image) are reconstructed for key frame, indexing process is performed through computing parameters. Key frames that are similar to user's query image are retrieved through computing parameters. It is proved that the proposed methods are better than conventional method from experiments. The retrieval accuracy rate is so high in experiments.
