  • Digital variable structure controller(DVSC) is implemented to control the temperature for the hot water heating circulating pump control system. For the DVSC, a control algorithm is suggested, which using a nonlinear sliding surface and a PID sliding surface outside and inside of steady state error boundary layer, respectively. Smith predictor algorithm is used for the compensation of long dead time. The DVSC of the suggested algorithm yields improved control performance compared with the one of existing algorithm. The system responses with the suggested DVSC shows good responses without overshoot and steady state error inspite of heating load change. By decreasing sampling time, dead time and rise time are increasing, and system output noise by flow dynamics is amplified.

  • The critical heat flux (CHF) levels that occurred due to exponential heat inputs for varying periods to a 1.0-mm diameter horizontal cylinder immersed in various liquids were measured to develop an extended database on the effect of high subcoolings for quasi-steady-state and transient maximum heat fluxes. Two main mechanisms of CHF were found. One mechanism is due to the time lag of the hydrodynamic instability (HI) which starts at steady-state CHF upon fully developed nucleate boiling, and the other mechanism is due to the explosive process of heterogeneous spontaneous nucleation (HSN) which occurs at a certain HSN superheat in originally flooded cavities on the cylinder surface. Steady-state CHFs were divided into three regions for lower, intermediate and higher subcooling at pressures resulting from HI, transition and HSN, respectively. HSN consistently occurred in the transient boiling CHF conditions that correspond to a short period. It was also found that the transient boiling CHFs gradually increased, then rapidly decreased and finally increased again as the period became shorter.

  • A mathematical model for the prediction of carbon-dioxide absorption rate during the transient state of rotary type absorber is developed. The rotary type absorber operates using a fast rotating porous structure and clean water. The model for the transient state rotary type absorbers is based on the steady state model of packed tower absorber. The paper manipulates the operating data of an arbitrary quasi-steady state condition of rotary type absorber for the determination of the coefficients involved in the model developed. The prediction accuracy is evaluated from the measured data of rotary type absorber operated under fast transient state. The measured data include the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in mixed gas and the pressure of absorber. The relative error in carbon dioxide prediction is estimated to be 20% at maximum. The model is successfully applied for the prediction of the behavior of a closed cycle diesel engine.

  • Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and the interface between seawater and freshwater in an unconfined coastal aquifer was evaluated by numerical modeling. A two-dimensional vertical cross section of the aquifer was constructed. Coupled flow and salinity transport modeling were peformed by using a numerical code FEFLOW In this study, we investigated the changes in groundwater flow and salinity transport in coastal aquifer with hydraulic condition such as the magnitude of recharge flux, hydraulic conductivity. Especially, transient simulation considering tidal effect and seasonal change of recharge rate was simulated to compare the difference between quasi-steady state and transient state. Results show that SGD flux is in proportion to the recharge rate and hydraulic conductivity, and the interface between the seawater and the freshwater shows somewhat retreat toward the seaside as recharge flux increases. Considered tidal effect, SGD flux and flow directions are affected by continuous change of the sea level and the interface shows more dispersed pattern affected by velocity variation. The cases which represent variable daily recharge rate instead of annual average value also shows remarkably different result from the quasi-steady case, implying the importance of transient state simulation.

  • The resolution issue of wetness index with relaxation of the steady state assumption is explored on the platform of Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The variabilities of the quasi-dynamic wetness index and the dynamic wetness index are discussed on the base of the spatial and statistical aspects depending upon resolutions of DEM and the drainage time. The organization patterns of the wetness index can be observed upon various drainage times and pixel size. The transient behaviour of wetness patterns of the Sulmachun watershed are shown in the relatively short drainage time. The statistical analysis of the quasi-dynamic and dynamic wetness analysis provide the convergence of analysis results to the steady state characteristics later than 10,000 hours drainage time. The probability density functions of the quasi-dynamic and the dynamic wetness index shows the existence of the threshold pixel size of DEM which provide stability and consistency in the computation result of these two wetness index.

  • This paper deals with a method to predict the flying state of the head slider in a optical disk drive(ODD). The Dual Solver based on the Quasi-Newton method and the Newton method has been developed to simulate the steady-state flying conditions. The numerical results show the effectiveness and reliability of this new solver.

  • Chain drive power transmission system was developed for a low head hydro-turbine which generates power by energy transformation on the turbine blades attached to chains. Also, experimental and theoretical analysis for the sprocket wheel tooth load distribution were performed. The tooth load was measured by the specially designed load sensor. It was found that the tooth load distribution for the steady state operation was in good accordance with the quasi-static state results showing the peak load at the final meshing tooth. The trend of the experimental results agreed with the theoretical results based on the spring model analysis and difference in the magnitude of the maximum tooth load was considered to be the effect of the variable spring constant due to the moving contact point between the roller and sprocket wheel tooth.

  • In order to optimize the performance of a Wells turbine with fixed guide vanes, the designs of an end plate and a ring on the tip of the turbine rotor are proposed as penetrating blade tip treatments. In this study, numerical investigations are made using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based ANSYS Fluent software, and validated by corresponding experimental data. The flow fields are analyzed and non-dimensional coefficients $C_A$, $C_T$ and ${\eta}$ are calculated under steady-state conditions. Numerical results show that the stalling phenomenon on a ring-type Wells turbine occurs at a flow coefficient of ${\phi}=0.36$, and its peak efficiency can reach 0.54, which is 16% higher than that of an unmodified turbine and 9% higher than in the case of an endplate-type turbine. In addition, quasi-steady analysis is used to calculate the mean efficiency and output work of a wave cycle under sinusoidal flow conditions. As a result, it has been found that the ring-type turbine is superior to other types of Wells turbines.

  • Comprehensive review on the determination of critical state parameters in sandy soils from standard triaxial testing was performed to facilitate the application of critical state soil mechanics to the shear behavior of sandy soils. First, semantic differences in literature were clarified, inferring that critical state should be considered as the ultimate state at large deformation. Second, the characteristics of critical state parameters were discussed, and also the uniqueness of critical state line and the sensitivity of quasi-steady state condition were verified in relation to initial state, fabric, loading condition, and drainage condition. Third, as an example, the critical state soil mechanics was applied to evaluate the post-liquefaction shear strength, i.e. the reliable ultimate shear strength in liquified soils, in terms of critical state parameters.
