  • This paper presents methods to analyze the topological structures of the spaces composed of patches extracted from waveform signals, which can be applied to the classification of signals. Commute time embedding is performed to transform the patch sets into the corresponding geometries, which has the properties that the embedding geometries of periodic or quasi-periodic waveforms are represented as closed curves on the low dimensional Euclidean space, while those of aperiodic signals have the shape of open curves. Persistent homology is employed to determine the topological invariants of the simplicial complexes constructed by randomly sampling the commute time embedding of the waveforms, which can be used to discriminate between the groups of waveforms topologically.

  • Blue light of 0.15mW at 417.6nm is generated in a quasi-phase-matched LITaO$_{3}$ optical waveguide. A new heat-treatment technique using a metal-oxide mask is proposed to fabricate the periodic domain-inverted grating with less degraded optical properties. The mask promotes the proton indiffusion by inhibition of the proton outdiffusion during the heat treatment. It reduces the amount of the initial proton exchange for the domain inversion and prevents the formation of crystal defects on the surface accompanied by the proton outdiffusion. Consequently, it minimizes the degradation of nonlinear coefficient and scattering loss caused by the initial proton exchange.

  • Quasi-phase-match (QPM) can be realized by means of one-dimensional spatial modulation of second-order nonlinear susceptibility and has advantages over the conventional bulk phase-matching method because QPM can not only utilize the largest component of second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor, but also can circumvent walk-off effect. • The main purpose of this study is to determine bifurcation as the primary instability of a glass melting furnace. Steady-state and unsteady characteristics of natural convection in the partially open cavity as appeared in a glass melting furnace is investigated by using numerical analysis. Three types of convection, such as steady laminar, unsteady periodic or unsteady quasi-periodic convection may occur according to the temperature difference between upper two isothermal surfaces along the depth of cavity in a glass melting furnace. In the temperature difference of 150-900 K between batch and free surface, the larger the temperature difference, the weaker the convection strength and unsteadiness. Since the glass viscosity is increasing exponentially in the lower temperature, the batch freezes the thermofluidic field especially below the surface of it. If the depth of cavity is 0.5 m, the bifurcation to time-dependent natural convection may occur in the range of 60-650 K. If that is 1.0 m, it may occur in the whole range of temperature difference.

  • A fabrication process of periodic electric field assisted poling of Ti-diffused channel waveguides in LiNbO3 (Ti:PPLN) has been developed and improved using a periodic 180o phase inversion along the z-axis. The zig for poling inversion and the Labview program of charge control have been devised. Pulse high voltage and duty cycle were adjusted based on the estimated charge required for poling inversion. Monitoring the change of leakage current under applied voltage less than the coercive voltage also minimized a breakdown.

  • Three kinds of metallic sandwich panels with quasi-Kagome truss cores have been analyzed on their mechanical behaviors subjected to bending load. According to the results of previous work on the optimal design, they were designed to have similarly high strength per weight with the identical overall sizes, i.e., the total length, the width, the core height. Differences were in the face sheet thickness and/or the thickness of the metal sheet from which the core was fabricated through expanding and bending processes. Under the bending load, they performed well as designed, as far as the maximum load is concerned. However, after the maximum load, the load-displacement curves were different each other depending on the slenderness ratio of the truss elements composing the quasi-Kagome truss cores and the face sheet thickness. Namely, the slenderness ratio and the face sheet thickness governed stability of the elastic and plastic buckling. Therefore, if energy absorption characteristics or structural stability as well as the maximum load capacity are to be achieved, the sandwich panel with thick truss members and thick face sheet should be selected.

  • A new metallic sandwich panel with a quasi-Kagome truss core subjected to bending load has been analyzed. First, equations of the failure loads corresponding to the eight failure modes are presented. Then, non-dimensional forms of the equations are derived as functions of three geometric variables, one material parameter (yield strain), one load index and one weight index. Failure maps are presented for a given weight index. By using the dimensionless forms of equations as the design constraints, two kinds of optimization are performed. One is based on the weight, that is, the objective function, namely, the dimensionless load is to be maximized for a given weight. Another is based on the load, that is, the dimensionless weight is to be minimized for a given load. The results of the two optimization processes are found to agree each other. The optimized geometric variables are derived as a function of given weights or failure loads. The performance of the quasi-Kagome truss as the core of a sandwich panel is evaluated by comparison with those of honeycomb cored and octet truss cored panels

  • We present preliminary numerical simulations of tilted-disk accretion around a rotating black hole. Our goal is to explore whether hydrodynamic instabilities near the Bardeen-Petterson radius could be responsible for generating moderate-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in X-ray binaries. We review the relevant general relativistic hydrodynamic equations, and discuss preliminary results on the structure and dynamics of a thin, Keplerian disk.

  • It is generally known that many cases of pathological rough voice are characterized not by simple random perturbations but by quasi-periodic perturbations in the speech wave. However, there are few studies on the characteristics of perturbations in vocal fold vibrations associated with this type of voice. We have been conducting studies of pathological vocal fold vibration using a high-speed digital image recording system developed by our institute, Compared to the ordinary high-speed-motion picture system, the present system is compact and simple to operate and thus, it suited for pathological data collection.
