Nanocomposite Magnetic Powder Materials using Mechano-chemical Synthesis

  • The materials showing high structure dispersity have been developed on the quartz base by mechano-chemical technology. Depending on the processing conditions and subsequent applications, the materials produced by mechano-chemical reaction (MCR) showed concurrently magnetic, dielectric and electrical properties. The obtained magnetic-electrical powders classified by aggregate complex of their features as segneto-magnetics, contained a dielectric material as a carrying nucleus, particularly the quartz on that surface one or more layers of different compounds was synthesized having thickness up to 10∼50 nm and showing magnetic properties and etc.

옥천계(沃川系) 함(含)우라늄 탄질암중(炭質岩中)의 우라늄의 존재상태(存在狀態)와 광물종(鑛物種) (Uranium Distribution Patterns and U-mineral in the U-bearing Coaly Slate of Ogcheon System)

  • The radioautographing of U-bearing cloaly slate samples were initiated in order to clarify the uranium distribution patterns in the samples of Ogcheon system. Moreover, x-ray powder diffraction and x-ray single crystal analysis studies were undertaken to identify the uranium mineral which was extracted from U-bearing coaly slate. The handspecimens were collected from the Boseong mine, located in Deokpyeong area, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbug-do. According to the experimental studies, it has been found the following facts: (1) fixed carbon has close relation with uranium contents, (2) quartz veins developed in U-bearing coaly slate are diveded into two groups based on mode of occurrence, formation stage and uranium distribution pattern; early quartz vein ($QV_1$) with low uranium concentration and late quartz vein ($QV_2$) with high uranium concentration, (3) matrixes around $QV_1$ are displayed homogeneous and high uranium concentration, while matrixes around $QV_2$ are low uranium concentration, (4) uranium mineral is identified as a variety of autunite.

석영유리 도가니용 합성 실리카 분말의 하소공정에 관한 연구 (A study on the calcination process of synthetic silica powder for quartz glass crucibles)

  • 반도체 공정용 석영유리 도가니의 내측에 위치하는 투명층은 합성 실리카 분말을 원료로 사용하여 제조한다. 도가니의 투명층에는 다양한 원인에 기인하여 버블이 발생하는데, 버블은 도가니의 품질뿐만 아니라 실리콘 잉곳의 수율을 저하시키는 악영향을 미친다. 따라서 투명층의 원료인 합성 실리카 분말 역시 버블 생성 인자를 최소화하는 것이 주요 목표이다. 이에 따라 합성 실리카 분말의 경우, 실라놀 그룹, 탄소계 불순물, 그리고 기공이 충분히 제거되어야만 한다. 본 연구에서는 졸-겔법을 이용하여 합성 실리카 겔을 제조하고, 2단 하소공정에서 하소온도와 유지시간에 따른 탄소 함량과 비표면적의 변화를 살펴보았다. 1단계 하소온도는 500℃~600℃, 2단계 하소온도는 1000℃~1100℃에서 수행하였으며, 유지시간은 10분에서 최대 12시간까지 실시하였다. 1000℃에서 1시간 동안 하소한 분말의 탄소함량은 0.0031 wt.%를 나타내었으며, 1100℃에서 12시간 동안 하소한 분말의 비표면적은 16.6 m2/g을 나타내었다.

급성 규폐증이 발생한 규조토 분말 취급 작업장의 결정형 실리카 노출평가: 역학조사 사례 (Exposure Assessment of Crystalline Silica in Diatomite Powder Handling Workplace with Acute Silicosis)

  • Objectives: A 46-year-old woman who had worked on cleaning stainless steel containers with Initially unknown powders died from acute silicosis. To determine whether the acute silicosis was related to his work environment, we conducted exposure assessment the level of exposure to respirable crystalline silica(RCS) during cleaning stainless steel containers with unknown powders. Methods: The exposure assessment of RCS were undertaken according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) method 7500. The components of the unknown powder were analyzed using X-ray Diffraction. Results: The unknown powder was found to be natural diatomaceous earth, which contained 12% and 9% quartz and cristobalite, respectively, crystalline silica. In the case of cleaning stainless steel containers with diatomaceous earth powder, the primary measurement resulted in 1.3 times higher occupational exposure limit of MOEL(in sum of quartz and cristobalite concentration) and 3.9 times higher in secondary measurement. The workbench was equipped with a local exhaust system, but because there was no hood at the end of the duct, the wind speed at the opening of the duct was 12 m/sec, whereas the controlled wind speed at the working position was only 0.3 m/sec below the legal standard. Conclusions: There is an urgent need to install the hood, conduct safety and health education for employers and workers, and periodically monitoring and manage the working environment.

Effect of Powder Size on Infiltration Height in Producing MgO Reinforced Al Matrix Composite by Vacuum Infiltration Method

  • The vacuum infiltration method is one of the composite producing methods. There are several parameters in composite production by vacuum infiltration. One of them is particle size of reinforcement in particulate reinforced composites. In this study, MgO powder and Al were used as reinforcement and matrix respectively. MgO powders with different size and amount to give same height were filled in quartz tubes and liquid metal was vacuum infiltrated into the MgO powder under same vacuum condition and for same time. Infiltration height was measured and microstructure and fracture behavior of composite were investigated. It has been found that infiltration height and fracture strength were increased with particulate reinforcement sizes. It has also been determined that molten metal temperature facilitates infiltration.

  • 부유된 광물성 미립자는 강, 저수지 그리고 호수의 유속 및 운송력이 감소하는 곳에서 침전되며, 다른 중금속들에 의해 오염된다. 그 실예들이 퇴적물의 준설, 수질오염, 운하 및 수공구조물의 유지관리의 문제이다. 이런 침전 문제들을 다루기 위해선 물에 녹아있는 이온(NaOH, HCl, NaCl)의 첨가 및 밀도의 변화 아래 점착성 퇴적물의 물리-화학적인 특성의 이해가 필요하다. 왜냐하면 미립자인 점착성 퇴적물은 물리-화학적인 영향 때문에 쉽게 응집현상이 일어나며, 다른 특성을 갖게 되기 때문이다. 본 실험은 광물성 미립자(alumina 와 Quartz)를 가지고 담수 및 염분을 함유한 침강수주 안에서 실시되었다. 정수 중에 부유된 미립자의 침강속도는 압력센서(최대 10 mbar)로 측정되었다. 초기 농도 20,000 mg/l)까지 quartz의 침강 속도는 증가하였으며, 그 후 감소하였다. Quartz의 침강 속도는 산성에서 강한 응집현상 때문에 증가하였으며 알칼리성에서는 낮게 측정되었다. 그러나 alumina의 침강 속도는 그 정반대의 현상을 보였다.

연탄재 처리 환경미화원의 분진 및 호흡성 석영 노출 (Occupational exposure to dust and respirable quartz in coal briquettes ash handling worker)

  • The purpose of this study is to assess respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposure levels in workers who collect and dispose used coal briquette ash (CBA) in sanitation companies that are subcontracted by one medium-sized local government on the collection of municipal household waste (MHW), and to analyze the quartz content in CBA. When the CBA powder that undergone specialized pretreatment in several steps were subjected to mineral identification and quantitative analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), it was found that quartz represented 18%, and in addition, mullite, and plagioclase were included. For two CBA collectors, samples were collected by the personal sampling evaluation method. After respirable dust was collected in accordance with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 7500 method, the concentration of quartz was analyzed using XRD. Meanwhile, a portable real-time dust monitor (Sidepak AM520, TSI Inc., USA) was also used to observe the dust exposure level for each time zone and job task. The RCS exposure level of one worker was as high as 0.024 mg/㎥, which was the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLV) level. The other worker also exhibited a concentration of 0.013 mg/㎥, which was more than half of TLV. The Sidepak results revealed that the work of collecting CBA and loading it onto a vehicle was hardly exposed to the dust of a significant level. It was found, however, that the work of transferring the collected CBA to a container through a conveyor belt was exposed to a very high average respirable dust concentration of 2.238 mg/㎥. The results of this study confirmed that quartz, which is crystalline silica and a carcinogen, is contained in CBA, one of municipal household waste (MHW), in high concentration. It was also confirmed that workers are exposed to high RCS concentrations while transferring collected CBA into a container. Although each local government in South Korea handles CBA in different ways, it is imperative to investigate the CBA exposure level of sanitation workers and improve their working conditions.

영동 일라이트 분말 제품의 규격에 따른 입도 특성 (Particle Size Characteristics with the Specification of Yeongdong Illite Powder Products)

  • 본 연구는 상업용 영동 일라이트 분말 제품의 판매 규격, 즉 메쉬(mesh)에 따른 구성광물, 입도, 화학조성의 차이를 조사하여, 일라이트 분말 제품의 특성을 이해하고 다양한 활용 분야를 개척하기 위한 광물학적 데이터베이스로 활용하고자 하였다. 충청북도 영동군의 광산을 보유한 두 곳의 회사에서 제공받은 상업용 일라이트 분말 시료를 X-선 회절 분석, 레이저 회절 입도 분석, 주사전자현미경 분석, X-선 형광 분석을 이용해 조사하였다. X-선 회절 분석 결과, 두 광산의 일라이트 분말 제품에는 주로 일라이트 및 백운모, 석영, 사장석이 존재하며, 이는 각 광산의 광석의 구성광물과 일치하는 경향을 보인다. 레이저 회절 입도 분석에서는 제품 규격에 따라 입자 크기의 차이가 나타났으며, 입도의 균일성은 메쉬가 높아질수록 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 주사전자현미경 분석에서는 입자의 형태와 크기가 규격에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 일라이트 입자의 크기는 제품의 규격 메쉬에 따른 차이가 크게 없으며, 주로 장석 및 석영의 입자 크기에 변화가 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 시료의 화학 조성은 광산마다 다소의 차이가 있으나, 규격별로 큰 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 이러한 결과를 토대로, 상업용 일라이트 분말의 활용 분야를 고려할 때 규격에 따른 특성 변화를 고려하여 선택하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구 결과는 상업용 일라이트 분말의 다양한 응용 가능성을 제시하며, 산업적 활용 및 새로운 기술 개발에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

Effects of cement dosage and steel fiber ratio on the mechanical properties of reactive powder concrete

  • In this study, the mechanical properties of reactive powder concrete (RPC) with a constant cement to silica fume ratio of 4 were investigated. In the experimental program, reactive powder concretes with steel fiber at different ratios were produced. Five productions using quartz sand with a maximum grain size of 0.6 mm were performed. A superplasticizer with a ratio of 3% of the cement was used for all productions. $40{\times}40{\times}160mm$ prismatic specimens were prepared and tested for flexural and compression. The specimens were exposed to two different curing conditions as autoclave and standard curing condition. Autoclave exposure was performed for 3 hours under a pressure of 2 MPa. It was observed that the compressive strength of concrete, along with the flexural strength exposed to autoclave was quite high compared to the strength of concretes subjected to standard curing. The results obtained indicated that the compressive strength, along with the flexural strength of autoclaved concrete increased as the amount of cement used increases. Approximately 15% increase in flexural strength was achieved with a 4% steel fiber addition. The maximum compressive strength that has been reached is over 210 MPa for reactive powder concrete for the same steel fiber ratio and with a cement content of $960kg/m^3$. The relationship between compressive strength and flexural strength of reactive powder concrete exposed to both curing conditions was also identified.

  • Natural dyes generally fan into two categories; organic dyes coming from animals and plants and inorganic dyes obtained from various minerals such as bengala, loess, ultramarine, prussian blue and etc. The main components of volcanic ash is clay mineral such as kaolinite, illite, quartz. Clay minerals Composing volcanic ash are kaolinite[$Al_4Si_4O_{10}{(OH)_{8}}$], illite[$K_{X}Al_2(Si,\;Al)_4O_{10}{(OH)}_2$], quartz[$SiO_2$], homblende[$Na_{0-1}\;Ca_2{(Mg,\;Fe,\;Al)}_5{(Si,\;Al)}_{8}O_{22}{(OH)}_2$]and etc. And the redish color mainly comes from iron oxide. In this paper, two different classes of dyeing process were tested; dyeing with volcanic ash only and cationic agent pre-treatment followed by dyeing with volcanic ash. The compositions of the volcanic ash powder and the volcanic ash deposited on the cotton knitted fabrics identified by energy dispersive spectrometer and XRD analysis. The major chemical components of volcanic ash deposited on the cotton knitted fabrics were confirmed to be the saicon oxide, iron oxide, and aluminum oxide and etc. According to the analysis by XRD and EDS-SEM, kaolinite, illite and quartz were also identified.
