  • We propose a quantized gradient search algorithm that can achieve global optimization by monotonically reducing the quantization step with respect to time when quantization is composed of integer or fixed-point fractional values applied to an optimization algorithm. According to the white noise hypothesis states, a quantization step is sufficiently small and the quantization is well defined, the round-off error caused by quantization can be regarded as a random variable with identically independent distribution. Thus, we rewrite the searching equation based on a gradient descent as a stochastic differential equation and obtain the monotonically decreasing rate of the quantization step, enabling the global optimization by stochastic analysis for deriving an objective function. Consequently, when the search equation is quantized by a monotonically decreasing quantization step, which suitably reduces the round-off error, we can derive the searching algorithm evolving from an optimization algorithm. Numerical simulations indicate that due to the property of quantization-based global optimization, the proposed algorithm shows better optimization performance on a search space to each iteration than the conventional algorithm with a higher success rate and fewer iterations.

  • In this letter, the distributions of direct current (DC) coefficients for P-frames in H.264/AVC are analyzed, and the distortion model of the Gaussian source under the quantization of the dead-zone plus-uniform threshold quantization with uniform reconstruction quantizer is derived. Experimental results show that the DC coefficients of P-frames are best approximated by the Laplacian distribution and the Gaussian distribution at small quantization step sizes and at large quantization step sizes, respectively.

  • Quantization is an essential method for compression of video. The quantizer can adjust the bitrate and control the picture quality. Especially, the subjective picture quality can be improved if the concerned region within a video sequence has good picture quality. In this paper, firstly a classification method according to the subjective concerned region within the video sequence is suggested. Also we propose a method that assigns the quantization step-size differentially according to the concerned region within the video. Totally subjective picture quality can be increased by appling the quantization step-size as small value relatively for the concerned region compared with the other regions. We can find the result that the proposed method gives the improved picture quality by assigning differently quantization step-size and the best improvement can be brought when the difference between maximum and minimum values of the quantization step-size in a picture is from 4 to 8.

  • We propose a new 2-step phase-shifting digital holographic optical encryption technique and analyze tolerance error for this cipher system. 2-step phase-shifting digital holograms are acquired by moving the PZT mirror with phase step of 0 or ${\pi}$/2 in the reference beam path of the Mach-Zehnder type interferometer. Digital hologram with the encrypted information is Fourier transform hologram and is recorded on CCD camera with 256 gray-level quantized intensities. The decryption performance of binary bit data and image data is analyzed by considering error factors. One of the most important errors is quantization error in detecting the digital hologram intensity on CCD. The more the number of quantization error pixels and the variation of gray-level increase, the more the number of error bits increases for decryption. Computer experiments show the results to be carried out encryption and decryption with the proposed method and the graph to analyze the tolerance of the quantization error in the system.

  • In this paper, quantization and inverse quantizatio unit, a sa component of MPEG-2 moving picture compression system, ar edesigned. In the processing of quantization, this design adopted newly designed arithmetic units in which quantization matrices and scale code was expressed with SD(signed-digit) code. In the arithmetic unit of inverse quantization, quantization scale code, which has 5-bits length, is splited into two pieces; 2-bits for control code, 3-bits for quantization data, and the method to devise quantization step size is proposed. The design was coded with VHDL and synthesis results in that it consumed about 6,110 gates, and operating speed is 52MHz.

  • We present an optical security method for binary data information by using 4-step phase-shifting digital holography and we analyze tolerance error for the decrypted data. 4-step phase-shifting digital holograms are acquired by moving the PZT mirror with equidistant phase steps of ${\pi}/2$ in the Mach-Zender type interferometer. The digital hologram in this method is a Fourier transform hologram and is quantized with 256 gray level. The decryption performance of the binary data information is analyzed. One of the most important errors is the quantization error in detecting the hologram intensity on CCD. The greater the number of quantization error pixels and the variation of gray level increase, the more the number of error bits increases for decryption. Computer experiments show the results for encryption and decryption with the proposed method and show the graph to analyze the tolerance of the quantization error in the system.

  • If the region of interest (ROI) is set within the picture of image and video and the high quality is provided in ROI compared to Non ROI, then overall subjective picture quality can be increased. ROI extracted by the color camera only increases the calculation complexity and reduces the extraction accuracy. In this paper, we use depth camera to set the ROI and calculate the object distance from camera, then propose a method that the different picture quality is controlled by depending on the distance of an object. That is, we apply a high quantization step size to the far object, but relatively a low quantization step size to the close object, so better picture quality can be provided. Simulation results show that applying the differential quantization step size to the distance of objects by the proposed method can improve the subjective picture quality.

  • This paper has derived the conversion loss according to the synchronized condition between the transmitted and locally generated spreading signals for the civil global positioning system (GPS) receiver in the heavy wideband Gaussian noise environments. From this, the outputs of the 2-bit nonuniform quantizer, which has the minimum conversion loss, is set to ${\pm}1$ and ${\pm}2$, while the quantization step size is approximated to the jamming-to-signal power ratio.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive algorithm for the quantization step size control of MPEG-2, using the information obtained from the previously encoded picture. Before quantizing the DCT coefficients, the properties of reconstruction error of each macro block (MB) is predicted from the previous frame. For the prediction of the error of current MB, a block with the size of MB in the previous frame are chosen by use of the motion vector. Since the original and reconstructed images of the previous frame are available in the encoder, we can calculate the reconstruction error of this block. This error is considered as the expected error of the current MB if it is quantized with the same step size and bit rate. Comparing the error of the MB with the average of overall MBs, if it is larger than the average, small step size is given for this MB, and vice versa. As a result, the error distribution of the MB is more concentrated to the average, giving low variance and improved image quality. Especially for the low bit application, the proposed algorithm gives much smaller error variance and higher PSNR compared to TM5 (test model 5).

  • In this paper, we propose a robust and fragile watermarking technique for tamper proofing of still images. Robust watermarks are embedded by quantization with a robust quantization step-size, and it is imperceptible value for human visual system. Fragile watermarks are embedded by thresholding and quantization with EW(Embedded Zerotree Wavelet) algorithm. The proposed method enables us to distinguish malicious change from non-malicious change. Futhermore this technique enables us to find tampering regions and degrees.
