  • Post-stroke aggression refers to aggressive behaviors and languages which are occurred after stroke. In stroke patients, over 15% suffer from the anger and the symptom lowers the quality of life of the patients, family, and caregivers. After diagnosing post-stroke aggression, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor(SSRI) and beta-blocker, beta adrenergic agonist treatment usually underwent to treat the anger and anxiety of the patient. In the present case, a 81-year-old female patient with post-stroke aggression underwent Korean medical treatment by Jodeungsan and Ukgansan for 49 days. The effect of the treatment was assessed with State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory(STAXI) per a week, roaming time per a week and roaming frequency per a week. After the treatment, STAXI score, roaming time, and roaming frequecy decreased, and the patient could successfully cease to take beta-blocker, which she started to take for treating her aggression, without any side-effects. This case report suggests that Ukgansan might be an effective option with post-stroke aggression patients taking medication including beta-blocker.

Most of the studies showed positive results, and they reported that the treatment groups had fewer side effects than the control group. However, the quality of these clinical studies was low. Conclusions: According to this study, TCM for PTSD would be an effective and safe intervention. Therefore, based on this study, more clinical research on the treatment of PTSD should be performed in Korean medicine in the near future.

Methods: We treated the patient using Korean medical treatments (herbal medicines-Kamiseokyong-tang, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and chuna). The treatments were measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and the Neck Disability Index (NDI) for headache and post neck pain. General health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life Five Dimensions (EQ-5d) Scale. Results: We observed improvements in the NRS, NDI, and EQ-5d scores after the treatments. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may effectively treat headaches (suspected CPSP) with accompanying cerebral infarction.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the domestic study trends on habitual abortion treated with Korean medicine. Methods: We searched the studies on habitual abortion treated with Korean medicine via searching 5 Korean web databases. After searching studies, we analyzed 7 studies selected according to the selection and exclusion criteria. Results: Of the seven selected studies, five case-reporting studies and two retrospective chart analysis. The most applied intervention for habitual abortion was herbal medication. All patients took herbal medicine before pregnancy, and Seunggum-dan was widely used. 66.3% of pregnant patients after treatment took herbal medicine after pregnancy, and Anjeonyichen-tang was the most widely used. As a result of analyzing retrospective chart analysis studies, whether the patient's age was 35 years or older has a significant impact on the success rate of Korean medicine treatment. Conclusions: This study has provided a basis for using Korean medical intervention in the treatment of habitual abortion in clinical practice. In order to provide a more high-quality basis, reliable follow-up studies related to the effectiveness and stability of Korean medicine treatment for habitual abortion should be conducted in the future.

  • Objective:: This study aimed to examine the customers' utilization of and satisfaction with oriental medical clinics in South Korea. Method: The data for this study were collected from 1,208 patients of 391 oriental medical clinics through a mail questionnaire survey from September to December 2008. The collected data were analyzed by the frequency analysis and $X^2$-test. Results: The results of the study were as follows. First, the most important reason that patients used oriental medical services was to get both oriental and western medical services simultaneously, because they thought such approach would be more effective for treating their diseases. Second, two important reasons that patients visited oriental medical clinics were "the reputation of and trust in the oriental medical clinics" and "the recommendation of their family and friends". Third, many patients of the oriental medical clinics have concerns about the "high prices and the outcome of oriental medical services". Fourth, the most preferred oriental medical service was "acupuncture". Fifth, it was found that 75% of the respondents were satisfied with the services they had received. They told that the outcome of the care and the kindness of the clinics' staff were very important factors that have an impact on their satisfaction. Conclusion: The study results imply that oriental medical clinics have to make an effort to strengthen their reputation and trust in the community through the scientific validation of oriental medicine, differentiated services mixed with traditional value, customer relationship management, reasonable and acceptable price of the services, staff education, and continuous quality improvement.

  • This study is designed to report three cases of postoperative care after hip surgery using conventional Korean Medicine treatments including phototherapy. Three patients undergone hip fracture surgery were treated with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and phototherapy. We used Visual analogue scale (VAS), EuroQol five dimension scale (EQ-5D), and hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score (HOOS) to evaluate treatment effectiveness. After the treatment, VAS score was improved in all three cases, while EQ-5D and HOOS showed different results by items. EQ-5D (pain/discomfort) and HOOS (pain, symptoms, activities of daily living) were improved in all three cases. EQ-5D (self-care) and HOOS (quality of life) showed improvements in two cases. EQ-5D (mobility, usual activities, anxiety/depression) and HOOS (sports/recreation) were improved in one case. Conventional Korean Medicine treatments including phototherapy can be effectively used to alleviate pain and symptoms after hip fracture surgery.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to reveal the relationship between multiple factors of traditional Korean Medicine diagnosis and consider the further probabilities of treating people with physical and mental problems not defined as diseases, which is called 'Mibyeong' in traditional Korean Medicine. Methods : 40 healthy participants were included in the observational clinical trial. The participants were asked to complete health questionnaires (e.g. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Stress Response Inventory) and they went through a traditional diagnosis process, including four stages of diagnosis (looking, listening/smelling, inquiring, and pulse taking), by a Korean Medicine doctor. Both the Korean Medicine doctor and an artery tonometry device performed the pulse diagnosis. Results : Although all participants were healthy people with no history of disease, more than half of participants had a problem related with severe level of fatigue (n=19), sleep disturbance (n=26) and stress (n=27) status according to the related questionnaires. Participants diagnosed with phlegm syndrome by the Korean Medicine doctor showed significantly greater score in phlegm pattern questionnaires than participants who were not. However, there was little agreement between the doctor's pulse diagnosis and radial artery tonometry results. Conclusions : We conducted a pulse diagnosis and measured health-related information along with the traditional Korean Medicine diagnose procedure, including four stages of diagnosis, and we found a linkage between diagnosis of phlegm and the phlegm pattern questionnaire score. The results suggest that a number of healthy participants, with no disease diagnosed, have Mibyoung symptoms which need further clinical management. Thus, we suggest that Mibyoung management programs based on qualified diagnosis tools and traditional Korean medicine diagnosis procedures be developed, and that future research using various diagnostic tools be carried out on a large population.
